SUMMARY

August 27, 2381

Crew morale is low, and Captain Eastwood discovers the source: Commander Nathan Sterling.  Having served on patrol routes for the majority of his career, Commander Sterling has little experience with extended exploratory missions and how it affects the crew.  He is a hard man, and is rarely satisfied.  Captain Eastwood and Commander Sterling have a heated discussion over the topic, and the crew is given some rest from readiness drills.

The Captain has returned from vacation to learn that his executive officer has suddenly taken ill and is unable to perform in her duties.  As an emergency transfer, Commander Nathan A. Sterling is assigned to the Discovery from the Indefatigable.  Commander Sadena is confined to the Discovery's sickbay and in quarantine until further notice, to allow the Discovery's medical team to research the aliment.  Several other transfers have also arrived on board the Discovery.  The first is Ensign Yarel Tsai, a former Lieutenant and Chief of Security from the USS Templeton.  Lieutenant Liam Millar joins the Discovery from the USS Liberty, formerly Lieutenant Commander and Chief of Security from the USS Liberty in Fourth Fleet (IDF).  Both are assigned to the Discovery's security team, and Liam Millar is also assigned as a tactical officer.  In addition Ensign Lyda Ilanov joins the Discovery as a counselor's assistant.

The Discovery departs from Starbase 217 and is under slipstream heading for the Gamma Quadrant.  Their flight is slated to end in the latter part of December; a three and a half month trip!

After a trying adventure into the year 2009 in search of the missing USS Dawnstar, the Discovery has returned to her proper time, and is now at Starbase 217. Outfitting for another foray into the Gamma Quadrant, the Discovery crew enjoys a well earned shore leave. In a moment of peace, William Frost was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and decorated with the Bronze Star. Several other members of the crew earned awards for their services over the last few year, including Captain Eastwood - recipient of a Silver Star.

Company E, the hard-bitten unit of Starfleet Marines aboard the ship has also been reassigned to relief effort on a nearby planet ravaged by natural disasters. Two squads will remain with the the Discovery lead by Second Lieutenant Peter Vonter. Leaving the ship in formation, the Marine Corps band played the Marine Corps Hymn, and gathered quite a crowd.

The crew was given a shore leave of a week in length.  Captain Eastwood and Lieutenant Commander Conyers used the time to take a short vacation to Oceania.  During that time, several strange and mysterious things have occurred.  Numerous civilians have begun to preach of the end of the universe on Starbase 217, and nearly 20,000 people have died of unexplained causes around the Alpha Quadrant.  Still more may be dead, but are unreported as the Federation's statistics and reporting services are limited to our edge of the galaxy.
