Gunung Kenderong
(1223m)
This
mountain can be seen from the east- west highway, just as you are passing Gerik
town. From the highway, you can see two solid peaks jutting out. The higher one
is Gng. Kenderong, while the smaller one is Gng. Kerunai. As for what I heard,
there is no trek up Gng. Kerunai yet, because the slopes are too steep. From
what you can see, the trek up Gng. Kenderong is pretty forward and steep. It
goes almost all the way up, with little rest or flat spots. The view from the
peak is simply breathtaking, as there are no nearby peaks to block your view.
Recently there was a fire at the peak, and all the trees have been burnt. Take a
note of this, because during the day, it can get unbearably hot up there. The
trek up takes about 5 hours only. It is advisable to hike a bit later, so that
you wont be bakin gin the hot sun up there.
To get to the base of the mountain, you'll have to drive to
Grik town, and take the road heading towards Penang / Butterworth. Just about
5-10 minutes, you'll come to a small signboard saying "Kampung Pahat"
. Take the left road just at the signboard , into the rubber plantation.
Continue further. You'll have to find your way as close as possible to the foot
of the mountain. At the end of the road, you'll come to a new coffee
plantation. Park your car there.
First day
Since you probably will arrive at Grik around lunch time,
have your lunch or some snacks first. 1-2pm would be a good time to start
trekking. From the coffee plantation, walk along the pebbled road which goes on
the left. Along the way, about 20-30 minutes, there is a turning on the
left, which goes into the jungle. Continue into the junction and you'll reach a
junction. Have a rest there and take the trek with the small bridge. You'll be
walking along an old unused logging road. Continue on and take a right turn
further up. You'll then descend down to a river . There is a campsite across the
river, about 1.5 hours from junction with the bridge and can probably fit 20
tents. This river will be your last water point, so fill up your water bottles
here. From there , take the trek behind the campsite. The trek will begin to get
rocky and steep . Continue on .... up the steep slopes. Along the way, you will
come to a small view point . Have rest there and check out the view. From
there, it is not too far to the peak. The trek will be quite gradual for the
next 20-30 minutes, then goes steep again. There will be some sections
where you'll have to climb using ropes. Be careful, as the falling rocks may hit
someone below. When you are approaching the peak, the trek will level out a bit
and the trek wont be very visible. You'll have to find your way ahead until you
reach the beirop. The campsite is quite big, since all the trees have been
burnt. From the peak, you can look down onto the peak of Gunung Kerunai which is
only a stones throw away.
Second
day
From the peak, it should take about 3-4 hours to get down. be careful , as the
loose rocks could make you slip or fall onto someone below. The trek down is
basically the same as the one you trekked up.
