Iconian Gateway
|
Sophisticated dimensional transport system, in use by the
ancient Iconians some 200,000 years ago, that allowed
instantaneous movement across interstellar distances without the
use of starships. The first known discovery of an Iconian
gateway in modern times was in 2365 by the crew of the Starship
Enterprise-D on the planet Iconia. The Enterprise-D crew
destroyed the gateway rather than allow it to fall into Romulan
hands. A second gateway was discovered by Dominion scientists in
2372 on planet Vandros IV in the Gamma Quadrant. The gateway was
housed in an ancient stone ziggurat whose internal structure was
constructed of neutronium, making it impervious to external
attack, even by quantum torpedoes. Rebel Jem'Hadar soldiers
attempted to seize the gateway, but were prevented from doing so
by an unusual joint mission of Jem'Hadar and Federation forces
that destroyed the gateway mechanism and its surrounding
building.
The Iconian Gateway was first seen in "
Contagion" (TNG). |

Mission Briefing: Captain Nara Treniek,
CO, SB-10...
It is thought that their
quadrant of origin is unknown, but there are hints from the Alpha,
Beta, and Gamma quadrants that the Iconians once lived there as well.
The Iconians are an extinct race; they appear to have
been extinguished 200,000 years ago, although there is also evidence that the
Iconians may have escaped a planetary apocalypse through the use of
sophisticated technology. A main Iconian (home?) planet was discovered in the
Romulan Neutral Zone, suggesting the Iconians are a
native Beta Quadrant species.
The Iconians are known to have possessed sophisticated
long-range transporter technology, giving them access to the far reaches of
the galaxy through a series of Gateways - at least 2 Gateways have been
discovered, one on Iconia and one on Vandros IV, in the Gamma Quadrant. It is
theorized that some Iconians survived by escaping through
their portal system.
(CLASSIFIED INFORMATION - COMMAND STAFF ONLY)
What isn't common knowledge is that Captain Kathryn
Janeway and her crew found several in the Delta quadrant, and Captains Kirk,
Picard, Sisko, Calhoun, and Commander Keller found Gateways in the Alpha
Quadrant. Captain Picard closed the Gateway Network in the mid-2300s, nearly
75 years after it was originally thought to be shut down. Officially, they
were permanently closed 100 years ago. This is extremely classified
information. The Gateways were a great gift to the Iconians, but brought
danger and destruction when the technology was sold to a race called the
Petraw in the mid-2200s.
It appears that the Gateway network has been reopened
with the appearance of a relatively small one near Starbase-10, but this
Gateway isn't believed to be a part of the original network. The Gateways
found on Iconia and Vandros IV were destroyed, and the others have unknown
locations, so it would be almost impossible to determine whether the entire
network has been reopened.
