Operated by the City of Tacoma, the park lands were gifted to the city by their former owner with the specific wish they be maintained as a wildlife preserve. To that end the City of Tacoma has done well.
There are several trailed acres for surveying animals on foot. Fences serve as barriers to keep dangerous animals separated from the visitors, and for the most part great attention is given to keep these fences unnoticeable.
There are also several acres of picnic grounds complete with vendors. Where the park gets really cool though, is behind the Jurassic Park-like entrance to the hundreds of acres of habitat sporting beaver, bison, elk, mountain goats and the like, all in a natural, unencumbered setting. It looks so real from the safety of the tram, it's easy to forget you're in a zoo. A cool zoo, but a zoo nevertheless.
