On Washington state's coast, just about as far from anything as you can get, lies Westport. Famous for running deep water fishing charters out of its harbor, there's not much going on in Westport, and that can be a good thing.

Just because the town's sleepy doesn't mean it lacks industry. The fishing supports an array of business and the best sausage in the state - which I know is not related to fishing except I've known a lot of fishermen who eat sausage - is made in Westport. Ocean Spray - boasting an industry as big as if not bigger than local fishing - has put the town on the map as the cranberry capital of the world, due to the area's numerous and productive bogs. (Okay, maybe Raymond, Washington down the way claims that title, but for the sake of storytelling let's just say it's Westport. They've got a cranberry museum.)

June looks like December in this part of the world, so a trip to Westport in early summer involves lots of rain gear and endless changes of socks. And if you're camping, it really sucks to be you.

Fortunately, we got the best of both worlds: the G. Gordon Lindy was packed with comforts, and we were parked in the driveway of a friend's vacation house (meaning hot showers, a full kitchen and bar). And all within walking distance of the Cranberry Museum. Who knew?
