What About Joan?:The
series debuted with a wobbly 8.8mil viewers, but ABC hoped that would
only
be a blip.
Then when the second episode dropped to 6.8mi, ABC's worst ever
in-season
Tuesday at 8:30pm result- quick cancellation was in order. This series
debuted solidly last season- so what happened? Maybe the show took a
huge
dip in quality (never watching it- I can't testify to that). Maybe
viewers
were scared off by the often aloof Joan Cusack. (I think she's funny as
hell). Maybe it was that nothing else could survive in this slot-
"Gilmore
Girls" (4), "Buffy" (2) & "JAG" (7) all dramatically improved their
networks fates in the hour. Who knows?
Dharma & Greg:For
a show to slip so steeply, so quickly, is somewhat of a marvel. This
show
was top 20 only
2 seasons ago, now it struggles to break the 9 million viewer mark. The
quality, from my judging, has been steady over the last few seasons-
not
funny like it was in the first two seasons, but comforting in its
familiarity.
So what happened to this show? Who knows, but if performance doesn't
improve,
ABC may be looking for ways to back out of the last year of its
commitment
with Fox studios at the end of the season.
Special Unit 2:This
show isn't doing too badly compared to last season, but what kills it
are
the backflips that "Enterprise" is doing. Holding on to just under 50%
of its lead-in, the UPN is looking for a more suitable replacement. But
don't look for the series to disappear entirely- it'll porbably be
shipped
off to Tuesday at 9pm or Friday nights.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?:The
odd man out in a very competitive slot, it's about the only thing ABC
has
to put here. So despite the low performance numbers, the show will
survive-
it's cheap, it's safe, and it's probably bottomed out.
NBC Saturday Movie:And
you thought the "XFL" was bad. Well it was, worse than the movie, but
still.
NBC is only averaging 5.5mil viewers with the flick. And although the
network
makes a tonne of money by airing 20 year old movies, even if only
5 million people tune in- it's hurting credibility. Without Saturday,
NBC
would surely surpass CBS as America's number one network, a title it
hasn't
held since "Seinfeld" went off the air.
ABC: The
network that has lost the most- for the second season in a row. It's
line-up's
a mess, and its returning series average only 237.1 points, a full 33
points
behind Fox. Yikes.
