Next Season... Given that last season only 2 networks (NBC & WB) changes their line-ups, everybody's due for some changes. Some very big (NBC), and some just minor adjustments (CBS). Here are our best guesses, with a few leaps of faith thrown in at no extra charge.
Here's big leap-of-faithnumber one: CBS will transplant "Judging Amy" out of its comfortable Tuesday home and move it to the more dangerous confines of Sunday. Why? CBS needs something new in this slot. "Touched By An Angel" lost 20% of its audience last season, slipping to the 13.5 million viewer range. CBS hasn't drawn Sunday numbers that low since "Cybill" aired at 8pm 6 years ago. But why "Judging Amy?" Well, for starters, its only in its third season (the same age "Angel" was when it moved to Sundays), and its stable in the ratings at about 13.5 million viewers. And it's easier to reprogram Tuesdays at 10pm then it is Sundays at 8pm. The moves was also rumoured to happen last season, but then "Angel" was averaging about 17 million viewers and the eye didn't want to mess with success. Now it's got nothing to lose.
Here's the second big leap of faith. ABC will scrap its semi-successful "Disney Movie" franchise. Why? It's only semi-successful. Though it averages 12 million viewers, its ratings are greatly bolstered by the big movies it premieres. Without those movies, its average would drop below 10 million viewers. But its replacement is a bit more fuzzy. It's greatly possible that "Americas Funniest Home Videos" would return to the 7pm slot. It doesn't really matter where the show airs, its going to pull about the same numbers. Besides, everybody but CBS & Fox gets killed in the hour anyway, so nothing would really be lost. But the show making its return as a weekly series is a definite. The AFVH website on ABC.com is announcing that is will be back next fall. And for 8pm, were going to recind our previous prediciton that "Spin City" would air on Fridays and put it on Sundays instead. ABC might want to establish a two hour comedy block on Sundays, and "Spin" could be the show to help the net do it (for our new Friday picks, go back and see). Follow that up with a new sitcom, "Millionaire" and "The Practice," and you have a full night of programming. Whether it's good or not is another question.
Here's the third leap of
faith (we bet you're getting tired of this): "The West Wing" will move
to Sundays. It's already widely speculated, NBC has already scrapped
its Sunday movie, and the net has promised one big surprize on its fall
schedule. Many are betting on "The West Wing."
We'll all know soon enough.
Over on Fox, there's one last leap of faith, but with good reason. "Dark Angel" will move to Sundays. Why? The show is the brink of getting cancelled, mostly because its up against some really tough competition on Tuesdays. "Frasier" and "Dharma & Greg" rob the show of it's key audience: youth. Sundays would deliver that in spades. Plus, with "The X-Files" mostly likely going into its last season, Fox really needs a replacement. And of all the shows on Fox right now, "Dark Angel" is looking more and more like that show.
On the WB... does it really matter? The new Jamie Foxx show (that was scheduled to premiere last season), For Your Love... who watches this shit anyway?
