Flood

Flood was the biggest commercial success for TMBG ever, it sold over 2 million copies.  In 1990 it had perfect timing; people were tired of hair bands and grunge had not yet caught on big.   Flood has a very cultural ethnic sound to it.  Songs like Istanbul, which is a remake of an old song from 1953, sounds like an old turkish big band tune.   The song Hearing Aid is reggae, and We Want A Rock is a country song with great base line.  Particle Man is probably the best polka song TMBG ever did.  In addition, the trumpets make their jazzy mark in  Your Racist Friend and Whistling in the Dark.  The album has an overall jazzy feel, yet some songs sound like N'Sync's Bye Bye Bye ancestors.  This could have been TMBG's best album, but some of the songs are a little boring.  The biggest "hits" of Flood were the church organ meets the electric guitar in Birdhouse In Your Soul, Istanbul (Not Constantinople), Particle Man, and Twisting.   TMBG still does live shows deicated soley to this album.  My personal favorite is Birdhouse In Your Soul.

My Rating For this Album is: A
