More Thundercats+Lunatacs=Trouble
Not content with eight Thundercats, four main mutants, and Mumm-Ra,
the show decides to add the Lunatacs plus three more Thundercats.
Thundercats HO!
Before we begin, I’d just like to say that this
particular series is my absolute favorite of the 5-parters. Animation
is good, characterization is good, action is good, and the plot is pretty
good. Let’s continue!
Part 1
Lion-O’s having these disturbing dreams about
leaving Thundera. He keeps remembering three Thunderians who were
racing toward the flagship and couldn’t quite make it. Oh, and we
get to see how Lynx-O was blinded by an explosion and how Bengali and Pumyra
stopped to try and help their older friend. How touching. Anyway,
Lion-O wakes up from this nightmare and Jaga appears, telling him that
these three Thunderians actually made it, but to find out more, he has
to ask Cheetara. Jaga never was much for distributing information,
I guess. Anyway, Lion-O asks Cheetara to go into a psychic trance
and find the three Thunderians. The poor cheetah obliges and in her
psychic vision, she sees that some passing Berbils rescue Pumyra, Lynx-O,
and Bengali. We’re not sure why, but we don’t question it.
Anyway, the Berbil ship was damaged when it escaped the destruction and
couldn’t make it to the Berbil home planet. No, I don’t want to envision
what this home planet looks like. And so the Berbils make for Third
Earth where they crash on an island. The Thundercats are shocked,
amazed, astounded, and the Thunderkittens are dispatched to find a boat
that the Thundercats can use because the Tank doesn’t have the range. (No
mention is made of the Feliner in the entire series, which probably has
the range, but because it’s such a good series, we’ll forgive the writers.)
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra has summoned Ma-Mutt to assist him. Through his
cauldron, he’s learned of the existence of these Thunderians and he dispatches
Ma-Mutt to find them. So Ma-Mutt takes off, finds the island where
the Berbils and Thunderians have made their home, and then recruits the
Beserkers to catch the Thunderians in exchange for gold. So the Beserkers
set out for the island and after a pretty good fight scene, Pumyra, Lynx-O,
Bengali, and the Berbils are caught. Meanwhile, Panthro is working
on the Hover Cat and the Thunderclaw, while the kittens scour the coastal
villages for a boat. They couldn’t find one, but as they’re about
to head home, they spy the Beserker ship. They hurry back to tell
Lion-O who goes out to see what the Beserkers are up to. Snarf tags
along behind him and waits on shore while Lion-O swims out to the ship.
Lion-O finds the Thunderians, but the Beserkers find him. He’s out
numbered and jumps ship, but the Beserkers aren’t through. They start
firing into the water and turn it boiling hot. Lion-O can’t keep
swimming and starts to drown while Snarf watches helplessly from shore.
And so we continue to Part 2…
Part 2
Lion-O is drowning, Snarf is freaking, and along
comes…Panthro. Panthro has finished the Thunderclaw and starts to
chase the Beserkers, who are making a run for it. Snarf hollers from
shore and tells Panthro about Lion-O, so the panther stops the chase to
rescue the lion. Another touching moment. This series is full
of them. Anyway, they lose the Beserkers. So the Beserkers
sail on until they make it to another landing port where they rendezvous
with the mutants. The mutants hand over some gold rather grudgingly
and a fight ensues. During the fight, the Thunderians try to escape.
They almost make it, too, but Bengali kind of ruins it by getting caught
again. So now they’re in the hands of the mutants. Off to Mumm-Ra’s
pyramid with them. Mumm-Ra decides to send them to Firerock Mountain,
a mountain surrounded by Thundranium pits. The Thundercats will never
be able to rescue the Thunderians and if they try, they’ll be easily captured.
Meanwhile, Panthro and Lion-O are wondering how they’ll catch the Beserkers.
They send Snarf back to Cat’s Lair to alert the others while they try and
follow the insane pirates. Unfortunately, Rataro and Vultureman are
flying by in the Rat Star (I’m not sure what it’s doing here, but whatever)
and they spy the little snarf. So they decide to give him a lift.
How kind of them. Snarf isn’t too keen on the idea, but there’s nothing
he can do about it. But he’s in luck, because Panthro and Lion-O
saw the whole thing. So off to the rescue again. Lion-O latches
onto the underside of the ship and is going to use the Sword to cut it
open, but Rataro magnetizes the hull and the Sword, which apparently has
an uncanny amount of iron in it, sticks to the ship. Snarf, who is
tied up, realizes what’s going on and bellies over to an open conduit.
He bites through a cable (great electrocution scene) and Lion-O gets his
Sword back. But the Rat Star rolls and the lion can’t hold on.
He plummets to the ground. Meanwhile, the Thunderians are now in
the hands of Captain Shiner. We really like him. He’s taking
them to Firerock Mountain where the mutants will hold them. With some ingenuity
and crafty feline tricks, the Thunderians escape yet again, but Shiner
outsmarts them but opening the hatches and allowing Thundranium fumes to
pour in. So once again, the escape attempt is foiled. The Thunderians
are safely delivered to Firerock Mountain. Meanwhile, Panthro has rounded
up the other Thundercats who are joining the hunt for the Thunderians and
Lion-O. And speaking of Lion-O, he’s still falling. But luck
is with him and he is falling over Hook Mountain. He falls into the
snow. Snow Meow and Snowman are wandering by and Snow Meow smells
the lion. He digs him out of the snow, Snowman quickly revives him
(Lion-O was a nice blue color, too), and Lion-O finds the Sword.
But Lion-O isn’t the only one finding things. The mutants find him.
They’re on their way to Firerock Mountain, but they have no problems with
making a quick kill on the way. So they start firing at Lion-O, Snowman,
and Snow Meow. And Monkian has a new toy called the Fist Pounder.
It’s supposed to rival the Thundertank. And this part ends with a
big fist from the Fist Pounder descending on Lion-O. On to Part 3…
Part 3
The Fist Pounder is about to pound Lion-O into
a bloody pulp, but the swift lion jumps out of the way. Unfortunately,
all this pounding starts an avalanche. Whoosh. Snow covers
Lion-O and the Sword is lost. Snow Meow finds Lion-O yet again under
the snow, they get the Sword back yet again, and the mutants attack. Again.
Oh, and Lion-O summons the other Thundercats, too. But it will take
them a while to respond, so in the meantime, Lion-O shows surprising cunning
and manages to knock Slithe off his Skycutter and steal it. Now he’s
ready to fight the mutants. Unfortunately, Tygra and Cheetara have
shown up at this point. Tygra in the Hover Cat has spotted Lion-O’s
Skycutter and taken him for Slithe. Oops. Tygra almost shoots
Lion-O down, but Lion-O sends up the Cat Signal. Tygra realizes who’s
riding the Skycutter, refrains from shooting the Lord of the Thundercats,
and they land. Lion-O decides to pay a call on Mumm-Ra who is probably
behind the whole thing while Tygra and Cheetara rally the other Thundercats.
Meanwhile, the Fist Pounder is having fun with Snowman and Snow Meow.
Panthro shows up late and misses the other Thundercats, but he does get
to pit the Tank against the Fist Pounder. Unfortunately, the odds
are not even. Rataro and Vultureman join the fray from the Rat Star.
The Tank overturns, everyone assumes the worst, and the mutants continue
toward Firerock Mountain. Jackalman and Slithe eventually get there
and Shiner gives them the prisoners. They take them down to some
dungeons, get a little rough with Lynx-O, and an enraged Pumyra manages
to engineer yet another escape attempt. But the Thunderians are separated
when they run for it and this time, Lynx-O is recaptured. So once
again, another plan foiled. Sigh. Meanwhile, Lion-O has managed
to get into some underground caverns leading to Mumm-Ra’s pyramid.
And he meets Ma-Mutt. Ma-Mutt is not too happy to see him, and the
reverse applies. They battle it out and Lion-O finally shoves the
mutt into a sarcophagus. So much for him. But then he walks
through a corridor lined with mummies and…and…they start to mummify him.
Lion-O makes a run for it but the wrappings have a life of their own.
Lion-O gets through a doorway and a door slams down behind him, but the
wrappings persist. No! He’ll be mummified! Somebody help!
Get me to Part 4…
Part 4
Big anti-climax. There’s some sunlight
and the bandages kind of disintegrate. Oh well. Lion-O gets
up and heads for Firerock Mountain. Why? We’re not sure.
I think I missed some vital part, because I don’t know where Lion-O figured
out that the Thunderians were being held at Firerock Mountain. Oh
well, such is life. Anyway, back up on Hook Mountain, Panthro is
pinned beneath the Tank. This is a problem because the panther is
being crushed. Luckily, Cheetara and Tygra are still around.
With the Thunderclaw, Cheetara is able to lift the Tank off Panthro.
They both tell him to rest, but Panthro will hear none of it and they set
off to find the Thunderians. Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra is concerned about
the Thunderians and orders Rataro in the Rat Star to help out. Oh,
and Snarf is still a prisoner. Rataro and Vultureman fly over Tuska
country, but Turmagar shoots them down. Snarf escapes! And
this escape attempt actually works. The Tuskas manage to chase the
Rat Star away and Snarf tells the Tuskas what’s going on. Oh, and
guess who shows up. The Berserkers. They’ve docked and are
on shore dividing up some money. Snarf and Turmagar get on a Gomplin
and tow their boat out to sea. Oh, and the Berbils from the island
are set free. Yea. They take off in a spare Beserker boat,
but this kind of catches the attention of the Beserkers who notice their
ship is missing. So they take their spare boat and go after it.
Meanwhile, Pumyra is hanging from a ring above the dungeon door while Lynx-O
tries to get the mutants’ attention. He succeeds, and once again,
the Thunderians are attempting to escape. About this time, Mumm-Ra
summons Hachiman and tells him that Lion-O has imprisoned Hachiman’s ancestor.
So Hachiman goes off to kill Lion-O and free his ancestor. Question:
Who isn’t in this series? Anyway, Lion-O has reached Firerock Mountain.
Kind of. He’s reached a cliff with a narrow rock bridge that leads
to Firerock Mountain. He can’t actually get there because of the
Thundranium. Not knowing what to do, he summons the other Thundercats.
Oh, and then Hachiman shows up to fight him. But on the bridge, Hachiman
falls. Lion-O to the rescue. But then Lion-O falls after saving
Hachiman. And we leave him hanging as we move to Part 5…
Part 5
Hachiman saves Lion-O. Okay, who didn’t
see that coming? Anyway, Hachiman saves Lion-O and it’s all good.
Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra orders Captain Shiner to get to Firerock Mountain and
capture the Thundercats. Shiner grudgingly agrees and starts heading
that way. But Tygra and Cheetara are also on their way there.
They find Shiner’s ship, get aboard, and take out him and his crew.
Great stuff for Tygra as he saves Cheetara from a guard she didn’t see.
They program Shiner’s ship for a nice trip into deep space, quickly leave
the ship, and continue on their way. Meanwhile, Turmagar’s Gomplin
is tired and can’t pull the Beserker ship any more. So the Beserkers
catch up and start shooting at Snarf and Turmagar. Thunderkittens
to the rescue. They start throwing pellets, but nothing is really
powerful enough. And now the kittens are in deep trouble. About
this time, Panthro and the Thundertank near Firerock Mountain and spot
Monkian in the Fist Pounder. Quite conveniently, they also happen
to be on a cliff overlooking the ocean. So Panthro gets Monkian to
drive over the edge and who should be passing beneath the cliff but the
Beserkers. Case closed. Everybody but Snarf gets to Firerock
Mountain and Snarf is on his way. But they still can’t pass the Thundranium,
though it’s nice that they’re all there together. Hachiman volunteers
to go rescue the Thunderians, but Mumm-Ra decides to send him back to his
own time. No go there. So Jaga shows up and tells Lion-O that
he will get the Star of Thundera, which will render Lion-O immune to the
Thundranium. Good ol’ Jaga. Unfortunately, when Jaga goes to
get the Star, he runs into Grune. Yes, this series really has almost
everyone. Anyone, he and Grune battle until the Star steps in, Grune
is kicked out, and Jaga ends up with the Star’s power. He passes
this medallion thing onto Lion-O who rescues the escaped Thunderians, they
get back to the other Thundercats, and all is well. Almost.
Mumm-Ra chooses that moment to seize the Star and try to tap its powers.
Jaga appears again, apparently to everyone, and tells Mumm-Ra that he’s
doing something dangerous. Mumm-Ra decides to ignore Jaga, he uses
the Star, and…BOOM! Big explosion. Mumm-Ra is nowhere to be
seen and everyone goes back to the Lair. Bengali, Pumyra, and Lynx-O
are anointed Thundercats and we’ve got more people to get in trouble.
Great series.
Part 1
Well, after the last series, the Thundercats
are all settling down for a much-needed rest. They believe Mumm-Ra
to be gone and although Tygra points out that the mutants are still a factor,
they admit that life could get pretty easy. About this time, Cheetara
decides to spoil the party and starts moaning about her sixth sense.
She calls out the name Mumm-Ra, but she doesn’t want to admit that the
old bag of bones might have survived his encounter with the Star of Thundera.
Lion-O wanders off to think about it and Jaga shows up. The big blue
ghost warns Lion-O that Mumm-Ra is powerful, but like Cheetara, Lion-O
can’t admit to himself that Mumm-Ra might have survived. This just
invites the question: Did Mumm-Ra live? Of course he did. You
can’t have a 5-part series about Mumm-Ra living if he didn’t live.
Flip to Fire Rock Mountain where Ma-Mutt pulls his master from the mountain’s
remains and takes him home to the pyramid. A very weak Mumm-Ra gives
Ma-Mutt the power to assume Mumm-Ra’s form and sends him away on a mission
to the mutants. So Ma-Mutt takes off and on his way to Castle Plun-Darr,
he flies over the Berbil village. Snarf is doing some trading with
the Berbils and when he sees the dog fly overhead, he takes off and follows
him. Okay, so Snarf isn’t very bright. We all knew that.
Anyway, he makes it to Castle Plun-Darr and catapults himself up to a castle
window. From there, he hears what’s going on. And it’s not good.
Ma-Mutt, as Mumm-Ra, tells the mutants to free the Lunatacs who are imprisoned
in rock deep in Darkside. The mutants could think of better things
to do, but Mumm-Ra is rather insistent. So they agree and about this
time, Snarf takes a plunge in the moat. The mutants hear him, see
him, and give chase. The Sword of Omens makes itself useful by telling
Lion-O of Snarf’s predicament. He and the other Thundercats go off
to rescue the little snarf and they are victorious. But who are these
Lunatacs? Lynx-O thinks he could learn more if he had a Braille Board,
so Panthro and Tygra start building one. In the meantime, Pumyra
and Bengali find the mutants about to go into Darkside, but to get there,
they pass Fire Rock Mountain and the tiger and puma can’t follow.
So they go back and tell Lion-O where the mutants went. Knowing they
can’t follow them, Lion-O, Snarf, and Cheetara take the Thundertank anyway
back to where Pumyra and Bengali just were and do just about the same thing.
They stare into Darkside and wonder what’s going on. Oh, Lion-O does
use Sight Beyond Sight. I guess that’s good for something.
Meanwhile, the mutants have found the Lunatacs and Vultureman comes up
with a plan for freeing them. Will it work? Let’s move to Part
2…
Part 2
The Lunatacs are freed! RedEye, TugMug,
Alluro, Chilla, Luna, and Amok make a grand entrance, note that their saviors
are the mutants, and start to attack. About this time, Ma-Mutt becomes
Mumm-Ra again and stops the fight. He convinces the Lunatacs to attack
the Thundercats instead. Speaking of the Thundercats, Lion-O, Snarf,
and Cheetara are now back at the Lair and Lion-O wants to have a council
meeting. But he can’t. Panthro, Pumyra, and Bengali are missing.
Where did they go? To the Thundrillium mines. The Cat’s Lair
was getting low on fuel. But at the mines, there doesn’t seem to
be any Thundrillium. A rather angry Panthro investigates and the
three Thundercats find Brutemen in the mine all chained up. Bengali
uses his skills as a blacksmith to free the critters and then they head
back to the Lair. When they get back, they discover a Bolkin and
a Wollow asking for help. There has been a rash of kidnappings across
Third Earth and laborers are disappearing by the dozens. Jump over
to Darkside and things suddenly make sense. The Lunatacs and mutants
have been kidnapping Third Earth citizens and putting them to work constructing
the monstrous fortress called Skytomb. But the Thundercats don’t
know this yet, so they start looking around for lost Third Earthers.
While flying by in the Hover Cat, Lion-O sees some activity and comes across
Slithe, TugMug, and some Brutemen pushing a cart filled with stolen Thundrillium.
Lion-O decides to intervene, but TugMug objects. Nice fight scene
in which TugMug breaks the Sword of Omens. Oops. The Thunderkittens
show up, but they can’t stop TugMug. About then, the Thunderstrike
makes its first flight with Lynx-O, Panthro, and Tygra. They stop
to help Lion-O, and Slithe convinces TugMug that it’s best to get back
to Skytomb. Speaking of Skytomb, it’s finished. Yea! Or not
so yea, depending on who you’re rooting for. And a Bolkin and Wollow
make an escape, too. They head for Cat’s Lair. Meanwhile back
at the Lair, Bengali has repaired the Sword of Omens. Weren’t we
told that only star fire could do that? Oh well, Bengali is really talented.
And as Bengali finishes his work, Pumyra and Cheetara pull up in the Thundertank
with the escaped Wollow and Bolkin. The two escapees tell the Thundercats
about Skytomb and also about a secret entrance into Darkside that doesn’t
go past Fire Rock Mountain. Unfortunately, it’s in the Forest of
Mists and no one has ever been able to get through the dark forest.
Until now. Lynx-O steps up to the challenge. Using the Braille
Board, he pilots the Feliner through the secret passage with Lion-O, Panthro,
the Wollow, and Bolkin. They get to Darkside, but they can’t find
Skytomb. Landing, Panthro discovers scorch marks. They all
realize why Skytomb has been needing so much Thundrillium. It’s mobile!
This could be a problem, and so move on to Part 3…
Part 3
Ma-Mutt and Mumm-Ra are trying to anticipate
the Thundercats’ next move, so Mumm-Ra decides Ma-Mutt can infiltrate the
ranks of the Berbils. Ma-Mutt doesn’t look too happy about this,
but he doesn’t have a choice. He becomes a Berbil. Meanwhile,
the Lunatacs are having some power struggles in Skytomb until Amok decides
to show everyone who the real boss is. Luna reminds them that fighting
among themselves was what allowed Mumm-Ra to defeat them in the first place.
Over to the Berbil village, now, where Tygra has plans for a new Thundercat
fortress: the Tower of Omens. It will be placed close to Darkside
so it can monitor Skytomb’s activities. The Berbils agree to help
build it and Ma-Mutt, learning what the Thundercats’ plans are, reports
back to Mumm-Ra. Now we jump over to Snarf who’s calling his nephew
Snarfer. Apparently, Snarfer is coming to help run the Tower of Omens.
Sigh. Hopefully, he will get lost in an asteroid field and never
show up. Anyway, Ma-Mutt journeys to Skytomb (again as Mumm-Ra) and
tells the Lunatacs about this new tower. The Lunatacs decide to go
blow it up. So they do. The Thundercats are putting together
the final touches and here comes Skytomb. RedEye and Chilla come
at the tower in the Lunattacker, so Pumyra and Bengali take two Thunderstrike
pods and retaliate. Lion-O calls the other Thundercats, then he and
Panthro run outside to see if they can help. They take on TugMug
and Alluro, respectively. Watching from Skytomb, the mutants consider
helping, but Vultureman says no. Showing some surprising intelligence,
Vultureman points out that as soon as the Thundercats are destroyed, the
Lunatacs will turn on the mutants. Clever bird. So they sit
and watch. About this time, Tygra and Cheetara show up in the Thundertank
and take on the Lunattacker. In the Thunderclaw, Wiley Kit saves
Panthro from Alluro. And from the Tower of Omens, Snarf messes with
a variety of switches, has a variety of electrocution scenes, and Lynx-O
takes out Skytomb. Yea! Watching all this, Mumm-Ra realizes that
he probably ought to become involved. But he is still too weak.
He wonders if he should ask the ASOE for help, but if they refuse to grant
him strength, he would be condemned for all eternity. That would
be bad. And so he leaves us wondering whether or not he will ask
for aid and we go to Part 4…
Part 4
Part 4 is a useless, worthless part. It’s
the “Rescue Snarfer” episode. It doesn’t start out that way, though.
It starts out with Mumm-Ra giving in to his cravings for power and asking
the ASOE to grant him energy. They give him what he wants and we
get a new change sequence. Instead of thunder and lightning, we now
have thunder, lightning, and four dancing green statues. I suppose
it’s an upgrade. On to the real plot. Snarfer is entering Third
Earth’s atmosphere, but his ship is drifting. The Tower of Omens
tries to help him correct, but they can’t. Skytomb is drawing the
little snarf into Darkside. He crashes in this strange place and
the Lunatacs try to capture him. The Thundercats can’t just sit and
let Snarfer die (though I suspect some of them wouldn’t mind) and Lion-O,
Lynx-O, Snarf, Pumyra, and Bengali jump in the Thunderstrike and fly to
the rescue. Or do they? RedEye senses their approach and figures
out a way to jam the Braille Board. So about halfway through the
tunnel to Darkside, Lynx-O’s Braille Board quits. This is rather
inconvenient, but the Thunderstrike does make it through safely and lands
on Darkside. But without the Braille Board, they can’t pinpoint Snarfer’s
location. So they split up and look for him. Meanwhile, Snarfer
is running around trying to avoid capture. He gets past TugMug, he
outwits Alluro, but Chilla is a little too frosty for him. Snarfer
is frozen. The Sword of Omens decides that this is bad and tells
Lion-O. Sight Beyond Sight reveals poor Snarfer and Lion-O races
to the rescue. Kind of. He frees Snarfer, but Chilla turns
around and ices his neck. He manages to call the other Thundercats
and Bengali, Snarf, and Pumyra race to help out, but they’re surrounded.
This doesn’t prevent Snarf and Snarfer from having a family reunion, but
Lion-O is rather unnerved by the situation. Not to worry because
Lynx-O has fixed the Braille Board. He comes charging in, saves them
all, and gets away before the Lunatacs can stop him. Watching everything
again, Mumm-Ra decides it’s now time to get persona. Hurray! The
subject of the series is actually going to make an appearance! Let’s
see him in Part 5…
Part 5
Skytomb is going to get rid of all their slaves,
but Mumm-Ra (and it’s really Mumm-Ra this time) shows up and says no.
He tells the Lunatacs that the Thundercats will try and free the slaves.
So now the slaves have become hostages. Well, Mumm-Ra’s right. The
Thundercats can’t just let the slaves sit around, but they’re still wondering
if Mumm-Ra is really back. So they all split up. The Thunderkittens
are left in charge of the Lair. (As usual.) Bengali is left in charge of
the Tower. (As will become usual.) Lynx-O and Cheetara are sent to
Mumm-Ra’s pyramid to pay a call on their old friend. (Not so usual)
The snarfs are left at home. (No surprise there) And Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro,
and Pumyra take off for Darkside in the Thundertank, which now has fog
lamps that can penetrate the Forest of Mists. (What’s up with the
fog lamps?) We follow Cheetara and Lynx-O first. They’re wandering
around the Pyramid and Lynx-O stumbles over a talisman that seems to hold
power for good. But they can’t find Mumm-Ra. In Darkside, the
Thundercats have split up (again) and Tygra has found RedEye. Tygra
has also found that RedEye can see the Thundercat when he’s invisible.
Another thing that Tygra has found is that RedEye is capable of defeating
him. Which RedEye does. Back to the Pyramid. Ma-Mutt,
who has been the star for three parts, was left at home on guard duty.
He attacks Cheetara and Lynx-O, but Lynx-O waves his funny looking Talisman
around and he and the cheetah are miraculously transported back outside
the pyramid. Weird. Meanwhile, Alluro meets back up with Panthro
and hypnotizes him. Chilla freezes Pumyra and brings her to Skytomb.
Lion-O gets all this from the Sword and tries to call for help, but Luna
and Amok, with a rather clever ruse, catch the lion and practically strangle
him. Cheetara and Lynx-O are flying back to the Tower when Cheetara’s
sixth sense informs her that the others are in danger. She takes
the Thunderclaw into the Darkside tunnel and tells Lynx-O to guide her.
Lynx-O has some serious objections because he doesn’t have his Braille
Board, but Cheetara goes ahead anyway. Amazingly, they make it.
They assault Skytomb, break in, and in the commotion, Lion-O regains consciousness
and calls the Sword to his hand. The other Thundercats are all energized,
they all break free, and Mumm-Ra gets really mad. He attacks Lion-O
and Lion-O uses the old trick of “look at your reflection and tell me what
you see.” But Mumm-Ra makes a rather perturbing announcement.
That doesn’t affect him anymore. And so he proceeds to give the Thundercats
some rather painful experiences until Lynx-O stands up with that stupid
talisman and waves it around again. Mumm-Ra shrieks and leaves.
The Lunatacs are intrigued by something more powerful than Mumm-Ra and
start fighting over it. So Lynx-O throws it into a corner and while
the Lunatacs quarrel, the Thundercats leave. In the Tank. Apparently,
they forget the Thunderclaw. Maybe it has an automatic recall or
something, I don’t know. And they never free the prisoners, either.
Oh well. So now we’ve got three Thundercats, Ma-Mutt, and the Lunatacs
to work with. Jaga help us all.
Psych Out
The Mask of the Gorgon
Possibly one of the most complex plots in the
series, the ending is rather disappointing. But it’s still a fairly
good episode. We start out with the Thunderstrike making a dive for
Cat’s Lair. The Thundercats are understandably startled by this and
rush to find out what’s wrong. Bengali and Pumyra separate their
pods from the Thunderstrike, land, and tell the others that Lynx-O has
gone nuts. With some fancy aerial acrobatics, Panthro and Lion-O
manage to get Lynx-O down to earth (literally) and into bed. But
Lynx-O has been babbling about the hills of Elfshima, the Book of Norvog
Nash, the Mask of the Gorgon, Sight Beyond Sight, and a child. Lion-O
tries out Sight Beyond Sight, sees the mysterious book, but then the Sword
loses the vision. Now we skip to Mumm-Ra who has found this Norvog
Nash book and dispatches Chilla and TugMug to free the Mask of Gorgon from
the Shemlock tree, a tree the Warrior Maidens guard. The Lunatacs
approach, Nayda asks them who they are (Look! They maintain continuity!),
and Chilla promptly ices the forest. Willa gets away and goes for
help, TugMug gets the Mask down from Shemlock, and to show its gratitude,
the Mask turns Chilla and TugMug to stone. Mumm-Ra thinks this is
hilarious, summons the Mask to his pyramid, and plots the overthrow of
the Thundercats. Speaking of Thundercats, we now go to Willa telling
Lion-O and Panthro about the missing Mask and both Thundercats are trying
to figure out why the Mask is so important. Lynx-O pops in with Bengali’s
help, declares that the Mask can’t look upon Elfshima and the child can’t
live again, falls down, begs Lion-O to wait so he can guide him, and faints.
Lion-O and Panthro decide there’s no time to lose, hop in the Thundertank
with Willa, and take off for the Pyramid. They get there, and much
to their surprise, they meet Nayda. Willa is confused, especially
when Nayda accidentally calls Willa “Nayda” but Panthro tells Willa not
to worry about that. They follow the maiden into the pyramid, the
Mask is nowhere to be seen, and then Nayda does an about face, calls down
the Mask and turns the other three to stone. Yes, Nayda is none other
than our old friend Mumm-Ra. Mumm-Ra takes the Sword, faces it toward
the Hills of Elfshima, the Mask of the Gorgon looks through the Sword and
suddenly, the hills come alive. Meanwhile, Lynx-O has convinced Bengali
to let him take the Thunderstrike to Lion-O’s aid. Bengali is still
confused until Lynx-O points out that Elfshima is an anagram that can be
rearranged to spell “I am flesh.” Lynx-O goes on to explain that
the Norvog Nash book told him all about the Gorgon’s child (the giant from
the hills) and how it is evil. Then the Thunderstrike finds said
giant wrecking general havoc, Lynx-O flies the Strike into the giant’s
ear, Bengali wonders if Lynx-O has lost it again, Lynx-O fires a laser
blast in the inner ear, the giant loses balance and falls over just after
Lynx-O and Bengali get out of there, big earthquake, the Mask of the Gorgon
breaks in the quake, and all the evil it caused (like turning various people
into stone) is reversed. Oh, and the Eye of Thundera destroys the
Book of Norvog Nash because it’s an evil book. The Thundercats fly
home in the Thunderstrike (I think they left the Tank at the pyramid) with
Nayda (who knows where they picked her up) and all is happy.
The Mad Bubbler
Oh boy, this is an interesting one. But
entertaining in a strange way. Snowman and Snowmeow are wandering
around on Hook Mountain when the Luna and Chilla show up to plunder a Thundrillium
mine. There’s a local legend concerning the mine and its dangers,
so Snowman tries to stop the Lunatacs. Oh, love this line!
Snowman claims he’s concerned for their safety, and while he says it, he’s
firing spears at them. Anyway, Snowman has no luck, and Chilla torches
Hook Mountain for him. Snowman tries to put out the resulting fire
while Snowmeow finds the Thundercats. Meanwhile, some weird froggish-looking
thing blows bubbles at Luna and Chilla while they’re in the mine.
They get trapped in the bubbles and all the evil in their hearts takes
over. The bubbles pop and they fight each other. Sweet scene
where Chilla ices Amok. Meanwhile, Snowmeow finds Tygra, Panthro,
and Cheetara at the Lair. They take off for Hook Mountain, save Snowman
after some neat tricks from Panthro and the Feliner, and then enter the
mine in the search for Luna and Chilla. They find the Lunatacs at
each other’s throats (note that Amok and Luna still fight as a team) but
before they can do anything, the Mad Bubbler shows up and the Thundercats
find themselves in the funny bubbles. After the bubbles pop, the
Thundercats start to fight. In the meantime, Chilla and Luna manage
to tumble out of the mine and the effects of the bubbles wear off.
They’ve had enough for one day and decide to hit the road. But the
Thundercats are still inside the mine and having an all-out battle.
Great scene and note that Tygra is the only Thundercat to avoid the other’s
weapons. He would have probably won, but the Sword of Omens decided
to tell Lion-O what’s going on. The lion is playing with the Berbils
when the Sword goes off, and Jaga shows up about the same time to tell
Lion-O that only the snarfs can get into the cave without turning evil.
So Lion-O gets up to Hook Mountain, sends in the snarfs, and Jaga is right.
The snarfs stay their usual bumbling selves. But they still have to get
the other Thundercats out of the cave. So they steal Cheetara’s staff
and Panthro’s nunchucks and make a run for the entrance. But the
illusive Tygra still has his whip and lassoes the two before they can get
in the clear. But they’re close enough for Lion-O to show the rebel
Thundercats the Sword of Omens. Yea! The Sword’s powers turn
them back to normal! What a surprise! The day is saved!
Together We Stand
Cheetara and Lynx-O are getting the impression
that Mumm-Ra is up to something. How fair is that? And why
don’t they always get that feeling? Anyway, no one can see that anything
is wrong, but they trust the psychics. And it turns out that they’re
right. The Beserkers (sigh, you know this plan is already doomed)
show up at Mumm-Ra’s pyramid and Mumm-Ra coats their armor with Thundranium.
They set a trap for Pumyra, weaken her, and send her back to the Tower
of Omens on foot. Bengali sees her coming from a distance, rushes
out to help, and at the last minute before she collapses, Pumyra manages
to tell him it’s a trap. Well, by this time, Bengali can see the
Beserkers rushing him, so he really doesn’t need the warning. He
fires the Hammer of Thundera, but to no avail. The Thundranium has
rendered the Beserkers almost invincible. Realizing there’s nothing
he can do, Bengali grabs Pumyra, slams his hammer into a pellet stowed
within the hammer’s hilt, escapes through the smoke, and...Lynx-O to the
rescue! The crafty old cat is out to save the day in the Thunderstrike.
And it would have been a great save if Ram Bam hadn’t knocked the Thunderstrike
down. Bengali and Pumyra get into another pod and head for safety
while Lynx-O signals Cat’s Lair. Lion-O and Tygra take off in the
Hover Cat and the Thunderclaw, leaving Snarf and the Thunderkittens at
Cat’s Lair. Where are Cheetara and Panthro? Oh well.
No one seems to know or care. Anyway, the Beserkers have knocked
down the Thunderstrike’s pod and captured Lynx-O, despite some last minute
heroics by Bengali. Lion-O and Tygra show up now, but they can’t
do anything against Thundranium. Then Lion-O uses the Hover Cat and
the Thunderclaw to make a small tornado that rubs off the Thundranium.
Yea! The Beserkers retreat, but it’s not over yet. Lynx-O was
hurt during the battle and seems to be dying. Eye of Thundera to
the rescue. It heals Lynx-O. Oh, but he’s still blind.
I guess it can’t do everything. And now we seem to have everything
resolved, but wrong again. The Lunatacs took over Cat’s Lair while
Lion-O and Tygra were away. So Lion-O and Tygra head back, plug their
ears against Alluro’s voice, and free Cat’s Lair. Now are we done?
Yes, this time we’re done. They clean up the Lair and gloat over
their most recent victory. Hooray.
Ravage Island
Lion-O, Snarf, Panthro, Cheetara, Lynx-O, and
Pumyra are repairing the Feliner, Thunderclaw and Hover Cat. Lion-O
and Snarf finish first and take off for a test flight, but this weird red
light suddenly appears. Lion-O can’t resist it and has to follow
it. Snarf begs him to go back, but the lion doesn’t seem to listen.
Now we switch over to Mumm-Ra who is explaining the powers of Ravage Island
to the mutants. The beacon on this island controls minds and whatever
that mind is told to believe, it believes. Sound like Tygra and his
illusions? Yup, that’s what I thought. Anyway, by this time,
the beacon reaches Panthro, Pumyra, Lynx-O, and Cheetara. Lynx-O
doesn’t see the light, but the others do. They take off and leave
Lynx-O behind. They all end up on Ravage Island with Lion-O and Snarf.
Snarf decides to find help and takes off in the Thunderclaw. It’s
a rather haphazard journey, but he makes it back to the Tower of Omens.
Sort of. He actually crashes into the base. Meanwhile, Lion-O
and the others are in for a heap of trouble as the mutants start playing
mind games with them. They realize that what they’re seeing are only
illusions, but it doesn’t make a difference. They can’t banish the
illusions and end up trapped in an imaginary cage. Mumm-Ra goes for
the Sword, but Lion-O tosses it away before he can take it. Well,
back at the Tower of Omens, Snarf, Snarfer, Lynx-O and Bengali mount a
rescue, but Bengali has to go in blindfolded. They take the Thunderstrike
and end up battling the mutants. Jackalman takes out the unmanned
Thunderstrike pod from his Skycutter and Bengali realizes that Lynx-O can’t
make it to Ravage Island with one pod remaining. The tiger detaches
his own pod, whips off his blindfold so he can fly, and falls under the
island’s control. The mutants catch another Thundercat, and Slithe
continues to chase Lynx-O. But Lynx-O manages to get away and find
the Sword of Omens with the aid of Snarf and Snarfer. He throws the
Sword at the beacon, it blows up, and the other Thundercats free themselves.
Everybody retreats, and the Thundercats win yet again. Panthro also
makes some weird little visors for the Thundercats in case they ever come
up against the beacon again.
Time Switch
Time Switch is one of my favorite episodes.
There isn’t an easy solution at the end, the Sword doesn’t get anybody
out of any situation for very long, and the original Thundercats (Tygra,
Panthro, Cheetara, and *gasp* Snarf) get the limelight. We
start off with Tygra and Lion-O burying an old suspension capsule.
We’re not sure why they haven’t done this before, but whatever. Somehow,
Tygra’s crane overturns, the capsule goes flying, and Lion-O inhales some
of the suspension gases. For the next scene, Tygra and Panthro walk
into the control room announcing that they have some bad news. Cheetara
wonders what’s wrong and Lion-O, a very young version, flies in on a spaceboard,
promptly lodges the Sword in Cheetara’s sensor board, and starts carving
his name in a wall. Snarf takes Lion-O off to play while the other
three try to figure out what to do with their youthful lord. Lion-O
and Snarf end up in a ventilation shaft and overhear Tygra explaining that
Lion-O will grow younger and younger and that the only solution might be
the Cave of Time. Showing his innate intelligence, Lion-O decides
to find the cave on his own. Snarf follows (doesn’t alert the others)
and they promptly get into trouble. They meet a monster, they run
into Chilla, Amok gives Lion-O a big hug while Snarf plays it cool and
frozen, and they’re taken prisoners by the Lunatacs. Luna’s rather
happy with the whole situation, but Lion-O shows some surprising spunk
and fights back in Skytomb, destroying Alluro’s psyche club and managing
to summon the other Thundercats with the Sword. He and Snarf make
a break for it, but they’re caught again. Meanwhile, Panthro, Cheetara,
and Tygra are on their way to Skytomb in the Thundertank. Panthro
wants to know how they’ll get into the Lunatac’s fortress, but the Lunatacs
solve that problem for them. After a brief but extremely well-animated
fight, the three Thundercats find themselves in the same cell as Lion-O
and Snarf. Oh, and by now, Lion-O’s down to about two years old.
This is generally viewed by all as a problem. Then Tygra, who has
some of his best material in this episode, realizes that Lion-O is small
enough to fit through the bars on the door. Tygra helps Lion-O crawl
out, the lion opens the door, and the Thundercats escape. Next scene:
the Cave of Time. Next problem: Lion-O is too young to understand
that he has to crawl into the cave. He won’t do it. Panthro wants
to carry him in, but Tygra flatly refuses. They’re all too old to
do that. They’d never survive. And through all this, Lion-O
is about one year old and screaming his little lungs out. That’s
when Snarf steps up. He realizes Lion-O is only hungry and throws
in what looks like…I have no idea how to describe this. It’s an emergency
food ration and it’s pink. Lion-O crawls after the ration, gets deep
enough into the cave that it starts to age him, and then the others pull
him out with a rope they’ve thoughtfully attached to his waist. Hooray.
Lion-O is back to normal! Whatever that means, anyway.
Sound Stones
This is a rather different episode, but there
are some mile markers here. It’s the episode where Vultureman starts working
with the Lunatacs, and it’s an episode that shows all the Thundercats involved
in a tactical ground battle. On to the summary. We start off
with some REALLY bad animation, but it corrects itself after about five
minutes and we are treated with quality animation for the rest of the show.
The mutants are sick of Vultureman’s inventions and his latest plan is
too goofy. They tell him he’s on his own when he asks for help in
getting the sound stones. Vultureman goes off to Darkside and manages
to snag a stone from the guardians that protect them, but the Lunatacs
want to know what the mutant is doing in Darkside. We see some great
material from both Chilla and TugMug as they “persuade” Vultureman to work
for the Lunatacs. With the stone, Vultureman creates a deadly sonic
weapon and the Lunatacs attack the Tower of Omens. Lynx-O, Pumyra,
Bengali, and Snarfer head for the Lair in the Thunderstrike and with Lion-O’s
help in the Hover Cat, they make it. Based on the weapon’s frequency
and duration, the Thundercats decide that Vultureman must be using a sound
stone in his new gun. Lynx-O, Lion-O, Panthro, and Snarfer set out
to find their own stone while the others try to retake the Tower of Omens.
Lion-O and company convince the guardians of the stones to give them a
sound stone. They head back to help the others who are having some
problems getting the Tower back. There are some neat battle scenes
with Cheetara, Tygra, Bengali, Wiley Kat, Wiley Kit, and Pumyra, but the
game’s up when Vultureman starts shooting his sonic gun around. Looks
like it’s all over, but then Lion-O gets there in the Tank. Panthro’s
whipped up his own version of the sonic gun and with Lynx-O to fire it,
the Lunatacs are soon sent running. And they abandon poor Vultureman
right before they take off, too. Ah well. No one said being
a villain was easy.
Day of the Eclipse
This is a pretty good episode. Third Earth
has an eclipse once every 100 years and for Mumm-Ra, this is a very important
day. A spell he casts on this day will last until the next eclipse.
So he casts a decaying spell on Cat’s Lair and all their equipment.
Over in the Lair, the Thundercats are doing some routine maintenance, but
Panthro notices that fairly new equipment is looking kind of rusty.
But they aren’t given much time to investigate, because the mutants are
attacking the Berbil village under Mumm-Ra’s command. Panthro and
Lion-O rush off to investigate and leave Cheetara and Tygra in the Lair.
But things are still acting funny. Cheetara can’t get the bridge
over the moat to retract. But even more interesting things are happening
out with the Tank. It keeps stalling, the weapons start malfunctioning,
and the mutants have great fun. Channeling all the energy into the
main gun, Panthro and Lion-O manage to blast the mutants away, but now
they can’t control the Tank. It rampages through the Berbil village
and finally stops when it jumps a ravine and crashes into a tree.
Panthro checks the engine and discovers everything has rusted up.
Lion-O tries to call Cat’s Lair from the Berbil village, but no one answers.
Speaking of Cat’s Lair, Cheetara and Tygra have now discovered that more
equipment is giving out. They get up on top the Cat’s head to inspect
the equipment up there and are suddenly surprised by the Lunattacker when
it starts to fire at them. Cheetara is knocked off, saved by Tygra
who jumps down safely, and the two lead the Lunatacs away from the Lair.
Tygra defeats RedEye with an illusion (YES, it IS an illusion! He
uses them outside the anointment trials) and Cheetara gets TugMug to jump
into quick sand. But they can’t hold the Lunatacs for long, and they
race back to the Lair to see if they can figure out why the alarms and
weapons aren’t working. Unfortunately, the Lair’s very walls are
starting to collapse. Not good. And communications are out.
Oh, and the Lunattacker starts ramming itself into the Lair’s base.
Tygra rigs up a temporary defense in the main entrance, but it doesn’t
hold. The two huddle together in a corner of the control room as
the Lair collapses around them. TugMug and RedEye get in, but the
floor caves out from under them and they don’t get to Tygra or Cheetara.
But the floor is starting to fall out from under them, too. Meanwhile,
Lion-O decides that all the equipment failure must be Mumm-Ra’s fault.
He goes to the pyramid to confront the mummy and learns about the whole
eclipse thing. Using the Cat’s signal, he creates his own eclipse
despite Mumm-Ra’s attempts to stop him, and the decaying slows, stops,
and reverses itself. Everything is great again.
Side Swipe
RoBear Roberto’s Taco Stand; Mexican takeout
for Snarfer, Snarf, Lynx-O, and Lion-O; an imaginary yet tangible Braille
Board; and Officer Mandora. Sigh, that’s only a portion of this infamous
episode. Snarfer is coming back with dinner from the Taco Stand when
Chilla passes him in the Ice Runner and freezes his ship. Mandora
sees the whole thing and takes after Chilla to give her a ticket, but the
Lunatac eludes pursuit. Snarfer and Mandora go to the Tower of Omens
and Mandora demands that Lynx-O help her get to Darkside with the Braille
board. She’s not too pleasant about the whole deal, either.
Well, the Lunatacs are expecting Mandora and Lynx-O to follow Chilla into
Darkside and they set a nice trap for them. The trap works and the
Lunatacs come up with the Braille board. Luna starts playing with
it and it disappears. Where did it go? Alluro hooks Lynx-O
up to the Skull Scope (some kind of mind-reading machine) and Lynx-O tells
them that the Braille board is just something from his imagination.
What? Oh well, this episode has very few understandable points.
Meanwhile, Mandora tricks Vultureman (what’s he doing here?) and RedEye,
gets loose, and rescues Lynx-O. Oh, she also spouts off some garbage
about enforcing the universal law. I have problems about with her
concept of jurisdiction, but it’s just an episode, so I guess I can live.
Anyway, Lynx-O and Mandora ask where Chilla is, Luna tells them that she’s
behind a hatch, so the two idiots climb in. At this point, Luna launches
the lamebrains into deep space. Lion-O is alerted to their predicament
with the Sword and uses the Sword to get them back down. But Mandora
still wants to go after Chilla. She’s not too concerned with the
other Lunatacs, even though they did kidnap her, but she sure wants Chilla.
She drags Lion-O, the snarfs, and Lynx-O back to Darkside yet again and
finds Chilla. One brief battle and it’s all over. Chilla is
under arrest. What happens next? Well, no one’s sure.
The episode ends. And a good thing, too, or the insanity might have
destroyed us all.
Mumm-Rana's Belt
This is a truly rare episode as it is the only
episode in which Pumyra gets a chance to shine. But for all that, she is
still completely overshadowed by Luna. It’s really a shame, because we
see some terrific stuff, but it’s just too little too late. Sigh. Ah well.
Pumyra, the Thunderkittens, and Snarf are on some kind of an outing and
Snarf tells them the story of Mumm-Rana’s belt. Long ago, Luna’s grandmother
possessed the belt, which made her large and in charge. The only person
able to defeat this purple-haired menace was Mumm-Rana, who now keeps the
belt. And as long as Mumm-Rana guards that belt, Third Earth will be free
from slavery. (Apparently the Brutemen were never told about this.) But
unbeknownst to any of our heroes, Luna and Amok are listening in on the
conversation. At the end of the story, the Thundertank pulls up and the
kittens leave. Pumyra seems to be preparing to leave, too, but she hears
strange sounds in the bushes. Racing over, she catches sight of Luna and
Amok leaving. Guessing they’re going to try and steal the belt, Pumyra
follows. And here we see a great example of puma speed. She doesn’t really
run but she’s got this leaping thing down really well. And she’s pretty
fast, too. Anyway, Amok shows an interesting side to his character and
senses the puma’s presence. He mentions this unfortunate problem to Luna
and the two kick it into high gear and head for the White Pyramid. They
cross the desert and by now, Luna can see Pumyra is gaining on them. But
there’s something strange about this desert. It seems to have quite a bit
of volcanic activity. Luna and Amok make it through, but Pumyra is caught
in the middle of it. She releases a pellet that somehow makes all the lava
go away and everything is happy. I think. I’m really not sure what she
does, but anyway, she starts racing/leaping to the pyramid again. Mumm-Rana
senses that something bad is about to happen (she’s so perceptive) but
she’s not fast enough. Amok topples one of the outside pillars and as the
pyramid falls apart, Mumm-Rana’s power base is destroyed. This could be
a problem. Luna gets a hold of the belt and becomes…really big. She also
gets some magic powers, too. Pumyra jumps in to save the world, but she
is quickly defeated and knocked unconscious. Bummer. Amok seals her up
in a hole in the pyramid and Luna takes off for Castle Plun-Darr, leaving
Amok behind. At Castle Plun-Darr, Luna procures the reluctant assistance
of Monkian and Slithe. They set a trap for the Thundercats. Meanwhile,
Pumyra wakes up and realizes she’s trapped in a tomb of stone, but never
fear. Amok to the rescue. Amok is upset that he’s been abandoned and starts
pounding on the wall. Then he dashes off, but in his rage, he’s created
a crack that Pumyra is able to break through. She runs to Mumm-Rana who
politely tells the puma that she can’t do a thing about the belt until
the pyramid is restored. Showing a surprising amount of courage for someone
who’s had two close brushes with death, Pumyra resolves to take on Luna
herself. And where is Luna? She’s up on a mountain with two mutants.
They’ve got a pair of rockslides ready and when the Thundertank passes
beneath them, they trap the Tank between the slides. Panthro and Lion-O
leap out, but as Lion-O tries to call the other Thundercats, Luna knocks
the Sword off a cliff and pins the lion beneath a force field. Panthro
tries to protect our favorite lion, but he can’t keep it up forever. Pumyra
jumps in to save the world yet again. The Sword has lodged in a tree jutting
out from the cliff. Pumyra gets to the tree, grabs the Sword and throws
it up to Lion-O. Lion-O summons the Cat signal, but instead of calling
the other Thundercats, it fixes the White Pyramid. ??? Yes, I’m confused,
too, but whatever. With her power restored, Mumm-Rana shows up and teaches
Luna a thing or two about magic belts. By the end of the battle, Luna has
lost the belt and Amok, who decides to show up, finds the belt and throws
it over the cliff. Luna is rather aghast, but practical Amok picks her
up and after a quick apology, the Lunatacs hightail it out of there. Thundercats
win yet again!
Hachiman's Honor
Finally, the Lunatacs come up with a rather innovative
plan. It doesn’t work and there are major flaws in it from the beginning,
but it’s original. With some deceptive tricks, Luna, Alluro, and
Chilla trap Hachiman on his way to visit the Thundercats. Chilla
freezes him solid after Alluro convinces him to give up the Thunder-Cutter.
On watch for their friend at the Tower of Omens, Lion-O, Snarfer, Lynx-O,
and the Thunderkittens find a huge storm brewing over the pass where Hachiman
should have come through. The kittens and Snarfer take off on spaceboards
while Lion-O takes the Hover Cat to find Hachiman. But the storm
is too much and Snarfer blows off Kit’s board, onto Kat’s head, and with
his view blocked, Kat crashes into Kit. The three are caught in the
storm and seek shelter in a cave. It happens to be the same cave
that the Lunatacs used to catch Hachiman. The trio find Hachiman
frozen, melt him, and Hachiman vows to get into Darkside and win back his
sword. The kittens can’t dissuade him, so Kat and Snarfer follow
the samurai while Kit goes looking for Lion-O. Hachiman makes it
to Darkside with Kat and Snarfer, but they have to cross the Valley of
Chains. This valley has a rather nasty little secret, but Hachiman
and friends quickly discover what it is the hard way. Chains pop
up from the ground and encircle them. Snarfer manages to elude them
and spots Kit and Lion-O heading their way. Hooray for Kit, she found
the lion. But Snarfer can’t warn them in time and they end up chained
down. But Lion-O calls the Sword to his chained hand, breaks through
and defeats the chains. But they’re not done yet. A giant Luna
appears in the sky and announces the arrival of their new enemy: the Automoton.
And what is this you wonder? It’s a robotic samurai and it’s armed
with the Thunder-Cutter. As long as the Thunder-Cutter is in its
hands, it can’t tell the difference between good and evil. It takes
after Lion-O and soon has the lion down and just about gone. But
Hachiman jumps in the way and touches the Thunder-Cutter. At his
touch, the blade realizes the robot is serving an evil master so the sword
kills the robot and returns to Hachiman. What a nice sword.
A rather disappointed group of Lunatacs turn on Luna and blame the failure
on her. She convinces them to chase Lion-O and the others, so they
do. But Lion-O and Hachiman head for the tunnel that got them to
Dark side, cause a cave in as they escape, and the Lunatacs can’t follow.
A disappointed Alluro shows his anger by shoving Luna into the snow and
the Lunatacs walk away. Way to go Alluro! Not bad for an episode
with Hachiman.
