The Cut!

[from Sophisticates, 10/00]

Jennifer Aniston has always kept us mesmerized with her mane drama, a one-woman act of trend-setting styles, from her famous "Rachel" cut to the ultra-straight and long look. Our favorite Friend did it again...showcased a new 'do! Her totally layered bob is getting a round of applause from us and others. Sophisticates's raises the certain and reveals what happened behind the scenes in Jen's recent mane move...

The Stage is Set
As Jennifer's personal stylist for the past eight years, Chris McMillan has been the mane supporting character in the star's ever-changing tress routine. Throughout her long-and-straight phase, Chris would ask her from time to time, "When are we cutting it off?" They would talke about a new 'do, but it wasn't until one day in late September that the beautiful Mrs. Pitt gave the okay. So Chris went over to Jennifer's house one Saturday evening to style her hair for a televised tribute to Bruce Willis. With hot hubby Brad watching, the styling began. "She was spontaneous about this," the stylist said. "But she was really ready for it, and really into it. We talked about it first, and she showed me some pictures of styles she did and didn't like. Then it was the moment to do it."

The Big Snip
In one sweep of the scissors, a major chunk of Jen's precious locks fell to the floor-nearly eight inches! With the weight of her hair gone, Chris went to work on creating the new chin-length style. "It's very much like a layered bob, but very piecey and textured rather than blunt layers," he says. "I did every cutting technique possilbe, different areas for different things. I like to call it 'controlled chaos layering', because some pieces are short and some are long." Chris aimed for an overall silhouette that was square, not round. "It doesn't have that bubbly layer effect," he explained. "It's definately not a round haircut like her old [Shag] cut." With shoulder layers in back, the length dips down in the front for a sexy wedge cut, exposing her neck, shoulders, and back, says the stylist, a regular hair pro at Tova Mind, Body & Spirit Salon in Beverly Hills.

A Standing Ovation
A look in the mirror and Jennifer was thrilled! "She was freed from her hair! She was so excited," says the stylist. "She really likes it." And Brad? "He was totally into it too." The great perk about the new cut is that it's totally versatile and simple, Chris says. Now, Jennifer can wear it straight, modern, and edgy like she did to Bruce Willis' tribute show. She can let her natural curl and waves kick in or she can blow dry it soft with a round brush. "The look is a little more Bohemian," the stylist says. "It's more down-to-earth and free spirited."
