Sonny stared at Luke and started to laugh. "Come on man, you
just named yourself."
Luke (deadly serious): I know who I named, Sonny.
Sonny: You don't really expect me to believe that you hurt Laura. You couldn't hurt a strand of hair on her head if you tried.
Luke: I'm telling you the truth, Sonny. Dammit, I hurt her in a way that she can never fully recover from.
Sonny: Calm down, man. I know it can't be as serious as you're saying.
Luke: What do I have to say to get through to you? I hurt my wife and I deserve to go to hell.
Sonny: What happened? You and Laura get into an argument over the phone? Did you say something that hurt her feelings, and you feel as though you can't take it back?
Luke: You're not listening to me. I hurt her, badly.
Sonny: What did you say to her?
Luke (whispering): That I loved her.
Sonny: Have you been touching the good stuff this early in the morning, Luke? I'll make you some coffee.
Luke: I'm not drunk and I'm not insane!
Sonny: Then stop talking nonsense, Luke!
Luke: I'm not talking nonsense, Sonny. I'm more serious than I ever have been in my life. Will you just get some men to do as I asked?
Sonny: No. I know you're not capable of hurting Laura in any way, Luke. That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
Luke: You don't understand. You can't understand since you would never do what I did. You would kill yourself first, which is what I should have done after I hurt her. I should have died. But I made her fall in love with me too.
Sonny: You can't make anyone fall in love with you. I've learned that over the years.
Luke: I should have left her life forever. I should have gone to hell. That's the only place where men like me belong.
Sonny: No, Luke. Men like my father and your father belong in hell. You're not capable of doing those things to your wife. You're not capable of hurting her in that way... beating her until she passed out. Then drinking yourself to sleep beside her, thinking that she got what she deserved. That's not you.
Luke: What if what I did was a lot worse? (Sonny just looked at him) Why didn't you kill Deke when you knew he deserved to die?
Sonny: I was young and stupid. And my mother stopped me. You know that already.
Luke: Do women always fall for their abusers?
Sonny: I'm going to have Mike make you that coffee. I know you said you aren't drunk, but you aren't acting sober.
Luke: Sonny? Would you have killed him if he did more? Let's just say... well, say he raped her. What would you have done?
Sonny (not making the connection): I would have killed the bastard myself.
Luke (taking out his gun and placing it on the desk): Then do me and Laura the same courtesy now, and pull the trigger.
