Chapter Thirteen

Bobbie came out to talk to a worried Laura, who was sitting in the waiting room.  She had been praying through Luke's whole operation.

Laura: Bobbie, how is he?

Bobbie: I wish I had better news, but I don't.  We repaired some of the damage to his heart.  He should have never left the hospital the first time.

Laura: What do you mean?

Bobbie: We were sure he would recover from the bullet wound, but he didn't.  What happened was that the alcohol in his system affected his heart and made it do a lot more than it was capable of.

Laura: I thought alcohol affected the liver.

Bobbie: It does, but when the heart is very weak, it can affect it too.

Laura: I should have never left him and Lucky out there alone to discuss their problems.  If I had only made him come inside with me, he would never have gone to the club and we wouldn't be here right now.

Bobbie: You can't blame yourself for this, Laura.

Laura: Who else is there to blame?

Bobbie: My brother.

Laura: What did you exactly mean that you didn't have good news.

Bobbie: Well, he's not going to survive with that heart for much longer.  He's going to need a transplant.

Laura: What are his chances?

Bobbie: I would like to say 50/50 at least, but I don't even think that is possible.  He has no will to live.  If he goes into another operation like that, he won't survive it.  Also, we need a heart.  We have none here and we just called up other hospitals for one, but the closest one that has it will take longer than we can wait.

Laura: So what are you saying?  He may die without getting the heart?

Bobbie: I'm sorry.

Laura: He can't die, Bobbie.  I just can't have him die on me like that.

Bobbie: Well, he's out of surgery now, so if you want to talk to him.  He's not going to be awake at the moment.

Laura: That's fine.  I just want to see him.

Laura walks into Luke's room and sees him hooked up to as many machines as he was last time.  She didn't know how much more stress she was going to be able to take before she completely broke down.  She walked over to his bed and stood there, staring into his face.

Laura: Why?  That's all I want to ask you.  Why are you so set on destroying your life?  Do you really want to kill yourself, or do you want me to give up on you?  Well, I won't have either one of them.  Luke, if you can hear me, listen closely.  You need to fight for your life right now.  You have to want to live.  It's the only way you will.  You also need a heart transplant and as soon as we get one, I will make sure that you get it.  I won't let you die on me so easily.  I promise you that I will do anything I can to make sure you live through this.

About 5 blocks away from the hospital, there is a car crash.  The ambulance arrives on the scene, and rushes the injured people to the hospital.  While there, one man gets on the operating table, but becomes brain dead some time during surgery.  Alan informs Monica that he is brain dead, but his heart is still healthy and young.  Monica tells some other doctors to get Luke Spencer ready for his transplant while Monica stays behind to remove the heart from this man.

Bobbie found Laura still talking to Luke when she rushed in with an OR team.

Bobbie: We need to get Luke ready for surgery right away.

Laura: He didn't even wake up from his last one.

Bobbie: We have a heart.  There was just an accident and one of the people became brain dead, so we're using his heart since it is still very healthy.  This is the best opportunity that we will have, Laura, so we have to move on it now.

Laura: Do I have to sign anything?

Bobbie: Amy has the paperwork.  Just sign it when you see her, but we're moving him now.

Laura: Hang in there, Luke.  Please.  (She kisses him on the cheek)

Bobbie left with the team and Laura went to find Amy.  She found her at the nurses station talking to some guy.

Laura: Amy, you have some papers for me to sign?

Amy: Oh, yeah.  Here they are.  All it says is that you are aware of the risks involved in this operation... blah, blah, blah.... oh, and you won't sue us.  You know, the basics.

Laura: Why is Stefan's name on here?

Amy: Let me see that.  Well, I don't know if you'll want to let Luke know.

Laura: Let Luke know about what?

Amy: He's going to live because Stefan died.

Laura: You don't mean...

Amy: Exactly.  A Spencer with a Cassadine heart.  If he finds out, he will flip.
