"... You may now kiss the bride."
Lucky looked at Elizabeth, and froze still. 'Did we actually get married? Is this real?' he asked himself. Elizabeth whispered, "The minister said that you can kiss me now, Mr. Spencer." Lucky blushed at being caught so off-guard, leaned down and gave his wife a passionate kiss as everyone clapped.
Lucky and Liz turned around to greet everyone when Lucky saw the man in the black suit departing from the church. "Wait right here," he told Elizabeth, as Lucky ran after him.
Lucky ran out of the church and saw the man crossing the street. "This can't be real. He can't really be here," he whispered, as he started to cross the street after the man. He stopped short as he saw the man turn around and look at him. Lucky froze still, not knowing what to do. Just then a car came speeding down the street and tried to put on its breaks as you heard the man scream, "LUCKY!"
Everyone in the church heard the scream, and ran outside to see what happened. Elizabeth was in the lead with Laura and Nikolas close behind her. Once outside, Elizabeth ran to Lucky's side without noticing the man leaning over him, his jacket covering Lucky in an attempt to stop the bleeding. He looked at Elizabeth and said, "hold this against his side so he doesn't lose more blood," and stood up to pull out his cellphone and call 911.
Even though Elizabeth didn't notice who was with Lucky, the rest of the guests did. Laura ran over to Lucky also, and looked up when the man stood up. "What happened, Luke?"
Luke ignored Laura as he tried to explain to the cops what happened. Once he was satisfied, he shut off his phone and leaned back over Lucky. Laura continued to look from father to son, still wanting answers. "What happened?" she asked more aggressively.
Luke continued to just stare at his son as he said, "Lucky must have seen me inside the church and followed me outside when I left. I didn't mean for him to see me back there. I didn't mean for any of this to happen."
"That doesn't explain what happened here," Laura said.
"As I was walking, I felt as if someone was following me, so I turned around. I guess seeing my face shocked him because he just froze still in the middle of the street just as some maniac came by and hit him. Maybe if I hadn't frozen just as he did, I could have gotten to him in time and pushed him out of the way. All I could do was watch and scream," Luke said, tears falling from his eyes.
Just then the ambulance came by and rushed over to Lucky. Luke, Laura, and Elizabeth moved out of the way quickly to give the paramedics some room. Once they were sure he could be moved, they lifted Lucky onto a stretcher and carried him into the ambulance. Everyone agreed that Elizabeth should be the one to ride with Lucky, and Luke took Laura and Lulu into his car and drove them to the hospital.
In the ambulance, Elizabeth takes Lucky's hand, trying to make any connection with him that was possible. "Lucky, please pull through this. We've just been married, and I can't bear the thought of losing you on our wedding day. We're supposed to be going to our reception right now, dancing to our song, eating good food, feeding each other cake... then go off on our honeymoon... the one night we've both waited so long for. I can put all of that on hold for you, Lucky, as long as you pull through this. You can't die now. You can't."
Elizabeth gets choked up, but after a few deep breaths, she regains a little bit of her composure so she could speak again. She knew she had to talk to him right now. She knew he needed to hear her voice. "Lucky, I'm not the only one you have to survive for. You have a family that needs you to live. Your mother, sister, brother, grandmother, aunts... even your father came to your wedding. You got the one thing you've been wishing for every time you've blown out your birthday candles for the past 5 years. Your father came back. This is your chance, Lucky. I know you've wanted to tell him how much you love him... well, don't throw that chance away now. I know he'll stay while you're in the hospital, so when you pull through this in one piece, you'll get your wish."
Luke concentrated on keeping up with the ambulance as Laura just stared at her husband. Lulu sat in the back, staring at Luke as well. Luke went to turn on the radio to end the silence, but Laura pushed his hand away. As their hands touched, it was as if a shot of electricity had gone through them. It had been so long since they had even touched hands, but it brought back all the old memories and the feelings that came with them.
Luke shook his head slightly, trying to keep concentrated on the road. He knew he couldn't look at Laura right now. He couldn't look into her eyes, knowing that he was responsible for this as he was for every other bad thing that ever happened to his family. If he hadn't been seen, his son wouldn't be fighting for his life. If he was just capable of making a clean break from it all, he wouldn't have been able to be seen by his son. But he couldn't do it. He couldn't do what his son needed him to do. Like in every other important situation he faced, Luke's cowardice showed.
The Spencers kept up with the ambulance the entire way to the hospital, and went with Lucky until they had to bring him into OR. Monica told them that they'd do whatever they had to, and followed Lucky in as well. Elizabeth just stood there as she watched her husband being rolled away, and Lulu went up to her to try and help her.
Luke just walked over to the couch in the waiting room and sat down. He didn't have any energy left in him. Maybe if he had, he could have been the one to be fighting for his life instead of his son. If he had only reacted like any father would and pushed his son out of the way. Lucky had so much to live for yet, while he was a very old and tired man. Why is it the young man who has his life ahead of him is the one in risk of losing it all now?
Laura watched her husband, fighting every emotion inside of her to go to him at that moment and take him into her arms. She continued to just watch as his face revealed just how much pain he was in. She wanted to tell him that this wasn't his fault, but she knew he wouldn't believe her. So instead of going with her feelings, she just stood there, hoping that he would be the one to come to her instead. But somehow, she knew he wouldn't. Just like that night 5 years ago when she asked him to open up to her so they could save their marriage, she knew he would close up and keep it all hidden away until he had to face it when he was alone, wherever that place might be.
Lulu kept sneaking looks back at her father as she stood next to Elizabeth and her mother. Was this really the man Lucky would write songs about? Was this the man that she would find her mother crying over late at night when she thought everyone was asleep? She knew it was because his pictures still filled their house, but she couldn't remember him at all. Her mother told her it was natural to lose her memory of him because he left when she was still very young, but she always felt guilty for not remembering. In a rare moment, her mother or brother would tell her a story about him and she had always wished she had some memories of her own to share. Instead, she just had a picture of him by her bed and other people's memories to try and comfort her at night.
Lucky felt as if he was floating through air. He found himself following a soft light. As he was approaching it, he saw a woman appear. "Who are you?" he called out.
"Lucky, you have to go back. It's not your time yet. Fight off the light and go home. You have a more important thing to accomplish right now that only you can do," she said.
In the background, he could hear random voices screaming out in urgency... 'We're losing him!' Lucky shook them off as he concentrated on the woman who stood before him. "Who are you?" he asked, still confused.
"I'm your grandmother, Lucky. I'm your grandmother, Lena."
