Chapter 34

The next day...

Luke wakes up and stretches, his back feeling like it's in a million pieces.  "They sure don't make prison cots like they used to or it's just been a while since I've been on one of these things."  Luke yawns and turns, seeing a man staring at him from the next cell.  "Am I that fascinating to you that you have to stare at me?"

Man: Just curious.  I saw the Commissioner himself drag you in here last night.  What are you in for?

Luke: For a lot of things according to the good old Commissioner of Port Chuck.

Man: Must be serious if he handled the situation himself.

Luke: Just keep in mind that I can do the same to you.

Man: Ooh, you really scare me now.

Luke grabs the man by his shirt and brings him close, his head pressing against the bars.  "You know, I'm really starting to get annoyed by these comments of yours.  So, if you want to live to maybe see the day that you may actually get sprung from this place, I would suggest on keeping your mouth shut."

Sean walks in as he sees Luke about to strangle the other prisoner.  "Now, Luke, do you really think it wise to add more charges to your list?"

Luke lets go of the man, shoving him to the ground.  "What now, Donnelly?  Do you plan on harrassing me every chance you get since I can't go anywhere?"

Sean: Actually, I came to tell you that there is a visitor here for you.

Luke: I don't want to see anyone.

Sean: Well, you're going to see her no matter what you want.  Would you rather it be in here or in my office?

Luke: Just send her in here.  I wouldn't want to trouble your department by making them have to keep a watchful eye on me, making sure I don't sprint out the closest exit.

Sean leaves and comes back with Laura.  He opens up Luke's cell to allow her to go in and locks it behind her.  He knew it was against policy, but after the story Laura had told him, he thought this might be the only way to get Luke to listen to her.  He silently says good luck to Laura and leaves.

Laura looks at Luke who sits down on the cot, staring at her with the hatred she saw from the night before.  She replayed the explanations she had come up with last night while she couldn't sleep, but now that she was in here with Luke, nothing seemed to be able to come out of her mouth.  She just stood there, hoping to make a connection with him by just a look, something they used to be able to do all the time.

Luke realized what Laura was trying to do, and he was intent on not allowing her to pull him in.  She knew that he couldn't resist that look, the look he fell in love with, the look he still was in love with.  Instead, Luke looked down, trying to get that look out of his mind, trying to keep hold of the anger he held for her right now.

Laura went over to Luke when she noticed that he wouldn't even look at her.  ‘Does he really hate the sight of me that much?'  She tried to reach out for his hand, but he pulled it away.  He didn't want her to touch him right now.  He didn't want to feel any part of her on him.  Didn't want to remember what it was like to feel her, to love her.  He got up to try to get passed her, but she stood in his way.  They collided into each other, their bodies touching, neither able to pull away.

Luke was the first one to come back to reality, remembering what had happened between them just last night.  He backed away and sat back down.  "I should have realized you would come here.  What grand explanation have you come up with for what I found out about?"

Laura (looking at the man in the next cell): Do you really think this is the best place to get into this?  Don't you think Sean's office would be better?

Luke (pointing towards the man): Oh, are you disturbed by the presence of my new found pal, Chatty, the eight dwarf, over there?

Laura: I just feel that this is a private matter between us.

Luke: There is no "us", Laura.  Do you think I'd really take you back after what I discovered last night?

Laura: Luke, please, can we go to Sean's office and have this out?  I know that somewhere in your heart, you don't believe what you saw.

Luke: Whatever you have to say, you can say in here.  If you really think I'm interested in anything you have to say at all.

Laura: If that's how you want it.  (Taking a breath) I'm sorry.  I'm more sorry than you can know for how much the secret of Nikolas' father hurt you.  But you have to know that the reason I kept it a secret is because I knew of all the pain it would cause everyone, including Nikolas.  Not because Stefan and I have been lovers since then.

Luke: So, he didn't have to blackmail you with that secret to make love to you.  You were just very willing.

Laura: I never did make love to him.

Luke: Then little Nikky must be a figment of my imagination.

Laura: Okay.  Yes, Stefan and I slept together.  But it was in another reality.  A reality where I thought my husband, my lover, was dead.  A reality where all I had to choose from was an abusive man or a manipulative one.  But that reality ended as soon as I found out that you were alive and I got off that damn island.  I have remained faithful to you all of these years Luke.  I couldn't be anything but faithful.  I love you too much.

Luke: What about the picture?  The picture of you and Count Vlad in my bed together.  Of him holding you like I do after making love.  Did you teach him how to do it just the way you like it?

Laura goes to slap Luke, but he stops her, grabbing her arm.

Luke: I wouldn't try that if I were you.

Laura: Let go of me!

Luke: Gladly!  (Shoving her arm to her side)

Laura: I don't know what to say to convince you of the truth.

Luke: Nothing.  I know what truth means to you.  It means whatever is less painful for you at the time.  I always thought of you as the least selfish person in the world, but like many things when it comes to you, I was wrong.  You wouldn't know what the truth was if it was right in front of your eyes.

Laura: How can you say that?

Luke: What?  How can I say that?  Hello?  (waving his hands in front of her face) Anyone home?  Remember, when you came back to me, the only truth to you was that you married Stavros.  Then years later, it was that you also had a child with him.  Now, years after that, I find out that that child is not really his, but his brother's.  Oh, and then you just told me that you did what you had to do while on that island, but you ain't on that island anymore, baby.  I just found out last night just how special your relationship with Stefan really is.  Does having two men in your bed make you feel more of a woman?  Do you get pleasure from knowing that you can get some any time you want?  When one is out of the house, what do you do?  Pick up the phone and beg for the other to come over?

Laura: How dare you!  How dare you minimize our relationship like that!

Luke: I didn't minimize anything, darling.  That was all you.  I'm the one who couldn't imagine sleeping with another person.  I held you above everyone else, loved you more than I could possibly love any other woman.  Even in all the time you spent apart from me, I never once had the slightest thought in cheating on you.  No matter how many beautiful woman cross my path in a day, or how many I see on the tv at night, you were the only one who ever appeared in my dreams.  And you think that I am the one who is minimizing our marriage, our love?

Laura: You are!  You're the one who is falling into Stefan's trap, believing what he wants you to believe.  Think about it, Luke.  If Stefan and I were really lovers, would I be so careless as to let Stefan be seen leaving the house?  Would I be so careless as to even have him in our house?  I'm not stupid.  I know you have men watching the house because of everything.  I've known since you walked out on me.

Luke: Hey, when your hormones get going, you can do careless things.

Laura: Damn you, Luke Spencer!  Stefan got exactly what he wanted because you're too blind to even see his trap!  He had this all planned and is playing you like a violin!

Luke: Then let him rosin up his bow and play his heart out because I guarantee you, in the end, I'll be the only one left standing.

Laura: That's what he wants.  Why can't you see that?  He wants to anger you enough so that you'll go after him.  He wants you out of the way, and that's what he is getting right now with you sitting here in prison instead of at home where you belong.

Luke: Let's get one thing clear so I don't have to repeat myself again.  I don't have a home anymore.  I'm never going back there while you are there.  Now, I may be talking to you now, but I have no choice in the matter.  Sean made it impossible for me to walk away, but once I'm out, don't expect me to be so kind.

Laura: I've had it.  Believe whatever you want to believe.  You want to think that Stefan and I are lovers, then go right ahead.  Let the Cassadines win the war.  I just want to ask you for one favor, not on behalf of myself, but for our kids.  Cooperate with Sean so you can get out of here.  The kids need you.

Luke: I'll get out and you won't be able to keep them away from me.

Laura: I don't plan on trying, Luke.  I love you too much to do that.

Luke just laughs as Laura starts to call out for Sean.  Sean returns, letting Laura free and locking the cell back up.  Laura just walks away without looking back at Luke.  Sean stares at Luke who throws his pillow across the cell.  "You're more stubborn than I even imagined, Luke.  If you're willing to give up a woman like Laura, then it's your loss."
