On March 29, 2001 I was appointed the N.J. Coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Alliance for Community Media [www.alliancecm.org], a national non-profit organization devoted to advancing the progress of public access, educational access and government access [“P.E.G.”] local cable television programming and channels in the public interest.
I was first introduced to video tape equipment in the context of a mayoral campaign in my hometown of Jersey City in 1972. The following year, as a student at St. Peter’s Preparatory School, I began a four year involvement with one of the first high school closed circuit television “stations” in the region.
As a sophomore at Rutgers College in New Brunswick in about 1979 I was one of the founding members of Knight-Time Television Productions, a student run teleproduction organization.
As a student at Rutger’s Law School in Camden I served as Audio-Visual Director and shepherded the videotaping of trial advocacy classes.
Several years ago, after about a dozen years in litigation and general practice, I embarked upon a career change into the television production industry. Now employed at my second full time position, I am currently an AVID editor, assistant producer and general counsel for a producer of a medical news and information program with a national distribution.
Since the early nineties I have been involved in community video production both as an independent producer for local non-profit organizations and as a volunteer and free lancer for my cable operator’s local origination programming. I have been producing a public access program in Jersey City since the fall of 1999. My show, "Ackshun Al Presents..." tm, which is subtitled "Public Affairs on Public Access" tm, presents open public meetings of government bodies and community events.
In connection with an upcoming mayoral and council election, I have been videotaping, on a volunteer basis, mayoral and council candidate forums which have been running on the municipal government & educational channel.
I am also a member of the North Jersey Chapter of the Media Communications Association- International [MCA-I], formerly known as the International Television Association [ITVA], another national non-profit organization [www.itvanj.org] which is dedicated to advancing the art and craft of television and the electronic media. I anticipate being elected to the position of Chapter Secretary in the fall.
I am currently working to establish a more vibrant and community oriented public, educational and government access channel environment in my City and would like to assist others to do so as needed in other areas of the Garden State.
