This is an ER fan fic staring John Carter and Lucy Knight based on the song from Chris De Burgh. I do not own these people, they are owned by Michael Crichton and NBC television.
The Lady In Red
Carter went to a local club the night that the med students graduated med school. He went to the bar of the club and ordered a beer. He sat there for the longest time, until she walked in with her friends.
Carter could tell her looks from a mile away. After everything, Lucy still held the keys to his heart. As he sat there looking at her and her friends, he wondered what would have happened if he had perused his relationship with her after the Exam 6 situation.
Lucy was wearing a red dress, that made her look like the most beautiful woman in the world in Carter's eyes.
He couldn't help buy see the guy she was with and it made his heart sink to his shoes. "Of all the places they could go to celebrate graduation, why did he have to come with the girl of my dreams" Carter said to the bartender as he pointed over to Lucy.
The bartender shrugged and said "Well you gotta choice, spend your life looking, or fight for her love" The bartender spoke up too late, by the time that the bartender looked over at the table, they had left and Carter sighed.
The next day at work, Carter tried to avoid Lucy seeing that she had a boyfriend and had no chance if winning her.
Lucy was doing a exam on a person when she saw Carter pass, she wanted to ask why he didn't talk to her last night in the club, but he was already gone.
Lucy finished her shift and went home and hopped into bed. She got a phone call.
"Hello?"
"Lucy?"
"Hi, Carter."
"I'm sorry I didn't talk to you last night at the club. You just seemed so happy with your boyfriend."
"He's not my boyfriend Carter. After we left the club, I found out why he was with me, and I left and went home in a cab."
Carter's heart skipped a beat. Did she really say she didn't have a boyfriend? Did he really have a chance to win her heart?
"I'll see you tomorrow, Lucy"
"Bye, Carter"
As Lucy and Carter hung up their phones, Carter said to himself as he looked in his mirror before going to bed "Pull it together Carter. That's the girl of your dreams, don't let her get away!"
One week went by and Carter and Lucy seemed like they were now back to their old ways.
That night, Carter went back to the same club where he saw Lucy that night. Carter was sitting at the bar when the DJ of the club stepped up to the mic. "And now ladies and gentlemen, a treat for you, a live act from one of Chicago's greatest club and bar singers, David Paul Hammond"
As David started into is first song, Carter saw her, Lucy in that same red dress the night she was there before.
David finished his first song and was in a romantic mood when everyone applauded. "And now, here's one of my favorites from 1987"
The band started to play the opening cords to "The Lady In Red" and all the girlfriends and boyfriends had their arms around each other.
"I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight. I've never seen you shine so bright. I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance. looking for a little romance. Given half a chance. I have never seen that dress you wearing or the highlights in your hair that catch my eye. I have been blind"
Carter walked over to Lucy after seeing she had turned down several offers to dance.
"Lucy, dance with me?" as Carter held his hand out to her.
"I'd love to, John"
John? When did Lucy start calling Carter by his real name?
Lucy took carters hand and walked out on the dance floor.
"The Lady In Red. Is dancing with me. Cheek to cheek. There's nobody here. It's just you and me. It's where I want to be. But I hardly know. This beauty by my side. I'll never forget. The way you look tonight."
Lucy had her hands drapped around Carter's neck and Carter had his arms around Lucy's waist and he pulled her closer to him.
"I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight. I've never seen you shine so bright. You were amazing. I've never seen so many men wanting to be there by your side. And when you turned to me and smiled. you took my breath away. I have never had such a feeling. Such a feeling of complete and utter love. As I do tonight."
Lucy looked up into Carter's eyes and she could read what was behind them.
"You're in love with me, aren't you John?"
Carter looked down at Lucy and nodded softly and whispers "I always have been, Lucy".
Lucy laid her head on Carter's broad chest and sighed happily as the song was about over.
"The Lady In Red. Is dancing with me. Cheek to cheek. There's nobody here. It's just you and me. It's where I want to be. But I hardly know. This beauty by my side. I'll never forget. The way you look tonight."
As David was finishing the song, john whispered the final lyrics into Lucy's ear "I love you" and presses his lips against hers.
Lucy was taken by surprise and pulled Carter closer to her as she deepened the kiss.
Parting for air reluctantly, they both looked into each other eyes and could tell they had love for one another.
Carter grabbed his things, seeing that it was getting late, and headed for his apartment.
Lucy grabbed her things and followed him.
As they headed for the door, Carter closed his fingers around Lucy's and Lucy smiled, their footsteps right beside each other.
