On the table below, the original air date represents the first time a particular episode was broadcast.  After the first run, Animal Planet aired the complete series on two subsequent occasions: July 3 - October 1 and October 8 - December 31.  The pilot episodes, "Call of the Wild," were originally aired as a two-hour premiere on Friday, March 31, 2000.  In the following broadcasts these two episodes were aired separately.  The episode titles are linked to short episode summaries, which I have compiled.  The summaries given on the Animal Planet web site were often erroneous and lacked important events.  The guest stars are linked to filmographies on the Internet Movie Database, if available.

Buck and Miles Challenger  "Call of the Wild (I)"

The series begins when Buck arrives at the town of Forty Mile and immediately attracts the attention of Miles Challenger, an impressionable young guide.  Buck is sold at auction to the Swede, who needs a powerful dog for his team.  This dog team includes the fierce Spitz, who instantly becomes Buck's mortal enemy.  When John Thornton, a legendary guide and the current proprietor of the Trading Post refuses to let Miles wander out into the wilderness as a guide, Miles grows more rebellious and discontent with his life in the small town.  After leaving the house in frustration he confides in Emma Berry, the object of his affection.

On the trail, Buck manages to drive Spitz away from the team and earns the respect of Swede.  Buck's strength and determination help Swede and his team through Brenner Pass but at the cost of Buck's health.  Back in town, Miles tries to prove himself as a capable guide but loses out to Twig, who agrees to guide the prospectors Maurice and Wesley to Eagle Ridge.

Swede takes the injured Buck to Charlie Jimmy's cabin, where Miles stays and helps nurse the dog back to health.  Unfortunately, since Swede lost the other dogs in his team he is forced to sell Buck to an auctioneer.  Buck is promptly sold for a princely sum to Hal Levant, who has brought his older sister, Mercedes, prospecting along with him.

The Levants prove to be terribly irresponsible as Hal gambles away his sister's money and Mercedes is forced to ask John Thornton for a line of credit at the Trading Post.  Despite this Miles tries to persuade the Levants to hire him as their guide.  Desperate for money Hal enters into a bet with Guilliard that Buck can pull one thousand pounds for one hundred yards.  Miles supports Hal's claim that Buck is up to the task only when Hal promises him the job as the Levants' guide.  Mr. Guildridge provides the financial support Hall requires and the contest is set for the following morning.

Buck and Miles Challenger  "The Attack"

While John Thornton is assaying gold in the Trading Post, his friend Dan Loughlin arrives in Forty Mile with the Iron Maiden, an armored wagon that transports gold to the port at Skagway.  While John and Dan discuss the gold rush, a member of Soapy Smith's gang notices the immense amount of gold stored within the Iron Maiden.  That night he rides to Soapy's camp and informs him about the Iron Maiden's destination.

The next day, Reese and Guilliard arrive in town with a wagon full of fighting dogs, including Spitz.  While promoting his dog fights, Reese catches sight of Buck and instantly recognizes him.  That night, while outfitting the Iron Maiden for the trip, Dan asks John to come along with him.  John promises to ask Adoley how she feels about the idea.  At dinner Adoley agrees that John should help escort the Iron Maiden.  When John doesn't allow Miles to come along Miles leaves the room in frustration.

The next day, after John and Dan leave with the Iron Maiden, Reese enters the Trading Post and claims Buck as his own, much to Miles' dismay.  Reese offers an old photograph as proof that Buck is his property and he has Guilliard take Buck to the stable.  Miles asks Emma for help in reclaiming Buck.

On the trail John learns that Soapy Smith is planning to ambush the Iron Maiden and he returns to Forty Mile to get his long rifle and Charlie Jimmy's assistance in helping him prevent the attack.  When the Iron Maiden breaks down Soapy and his gang attack, only to be foiled by John and Charlie.

At town Reese allows Miles to be Buck's handler during the main fight with Spitz.  This fight is interrupted when Mercedes and Adoley arrive at the stable.  They reveal that Reese and Guilliard are dog thieves and frauds.  Reese and Guilliard leave town and Buck is spared any further fighting.  After returning from Skagway, John tells Miles about the attack on the Iron Maiden and inquires about Buck's health after the dog fight.  Miles agrees to take care of Buck and the two walk down the main street of Forty Mile.

Buck and Miles Challenger "Molly Brown"

Molly Brown, the richest woman in the world, arrives in Forty Mile along with her friend and biographer Ms. Tracy.  She checks into the hotel, where she meets Emma, and then immediately heads to the saloon.  There she converses with Mercedes, whom she met eleven years earlier.  Molly tells Mercedes of her desire to see the Yukon and gold fever first hand.  It doesn't take her long to witness the gold fever for herself; Oscar, a drunk miner, staggers into the saloon carrying a massive gold nugget.  This immediately attracts the interest of everyone in the saloon.

That night Oscar staggers into an alley near the saloon.  He is beaten up by a couple of men who have an interest in obtaining the gold nugget.  Fortunately for Oscar, Miles and Buck arrive on the scene and Buck manages to escape with the nugget.  Miles sends Oscar over to the Trading Post, where Adoley nurses him back to health.  Oscar bemoans his lost gold but Miles returns to the Trading Post with the nugget in his possession.  That same night John places the nugget in the safe so it will be secure.  Furthermore, John and Adoley agree to let Oscar spend the night in the Trading Post since he has nowhere else to go.

The next day Soapy Smith and his crony Leo arrive in Forty Mile.  They quickly learn of Oscar's gold nugget.  It doesn't take long before John hears of Soapy's return and he encounters the two criminals in the saloon.  A gunfight is avoided and Soapy and Leo agree to turn in their guns.  Later, under the pretense of leaving Forty Mile for good, Soapy and Leo manage to get their guns returned and they retreat a short ways from town.

That same day Mercedes holds a social at the saloon in honor of Molly Brown.  Nearly all the residents of Forty Mile attend the party.  Returning to town Soapy and Leo try to take advantage of this and they make an attempt to break into the safe inside the Trading Post.  However their plans are thwarted before they can get to the Trading Post and Buck manages to get away with the gold nugget.  A mad rush ensues as the citizens get word that Oscar no longer possesses the gold.  Finally John and Molly restore order and Buck is allowed to chase Soapy and Leo out of Forty Mile.  The next day Molly and Ms. Tracy leave with Oscar as their guide.

Miles Challenger "Betrayal"

Dr. Thaddeus P. Rossmore, along with his daughter Ariella, arrive in Forty Mile hoping to sell a special "cure all" elixir.  Not only is Dr. Rossmore interested in hawking his snake oil at five dollars a bottle, he's also looking for a new act for his worldwide tour.  After seeing Miles and Buck in the street Dr. Rossmore beings devising a way he can entice Miles and Buck to join his traveling carnival.

On the same day Miles' older cousin, Stanton, arrives back in Forty Mile, having been "betrayed" by his grandfather.  Over at the Trading Post the Swede arrives to tell John and Adoley that he must leave town so he can tend to his dying father.  He will be leaving soon and must postpone his marriage to Mercedes.

In the saloon Stanton reveals to Miles and Emma that his grandfather will not retire from Challenger Enterprises until Stanton has survived for a year in Forty Mile.  Stanton thinks he can strike it rich with a gold claim but Miles replies that he will have to work for a living.  When Stanton says that he must live at Thornton house because he has such a small amount of money Miles strongly objects.  However, Emma invites Stanton to stay at the Forty Mile Hotel for free, much to Miles' chagrin.

Later that day a frustrated Miles is approached by the devious Dr. Rossmore, who relates his adventurous life in the circus and on his own worldwide tour.  He invites Miles to dinner so that the young man can meet Ariella, who has the ability to read palms and tarot cards and consult crystal balls.  It becomes evident that Dr. Rossmore only wants to coax Miles into joining his carnival.  Before leaving, Dr. Rossmore formally invites Miles to become his new guide and assistant.  Miles agrees to think over the proposal.

Miles meets Ariella at the Forty Mile Hotel and is intrigued by her and her lifestyle.  After reading Miles' palm Ariella declares that she is quite happy Miles is considering joining her and her father.  Outside the saloon Stanton and Emma are about to kiss when they are interrupted by a very angry Miles, who claims Emma for himself.  Stanton and Miles fight and Emma rushes to Stanton's side.  It becomes painfully clear to Miles that Emma's feeling are directed towards Stanton.  A disgruntled Miles goes to the saloon to drink.  However, John Thornton intervenes and tries to take Miles home.  In frustration the young man escapes John's grasp and storms out the door declaring that he will soon leave Forty Mile for good.

At night Miles tells his mother that he is leaving Forty Mile with Dr. Rossmore.  Although Adoley refuses to accept this at first, she realizes that Miles has made up his mind and it cannot be changed.  As Miles is about to leave Forty Mile the next morning he encounters Emma in the street.  She finally reveals that that she loves him but leaves before Miles can pursue her any further.  After some parting words with his step-father and mother, Miles and Buck leave Forty Mile with Dr. Rossmore and Ariella.  As the wagon departs Adoley is seen in tears.
