Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan is definitely the eccentric Friend. And she has been through just about everything.
Phoebe was orphaned at age 14 when her mother committed suicide and her step-father went back to prison. Her real father left her mother before Phoebe was born. She then came to the city and lived with "an albino guy" until he killed himself. Then she was on her own. He grandmother was her only family for awhile.
Phoebe has a twin sister, Ursula, (who appeared on NBC's Mad About You.) They don't get along and rarely speak to each other. She discovered her half brother, Frank, Jr., when looking for her father. She found an old picture of her parents with a friend of theirs from high school and went to talk to her. She found out that her mother was really a guardian and this woman, Phoebe, is her real mother.
Phoebe's grandmother passed away and she met her father at the funeral. Surprisingly, there's been no mention of him since.
When Frank, Jr. and his wife asked Phoebe to be a surrogate for them, she agreed. She gave birth to triplets Leslie, Frank, Jr., Jr., and Chandler, in the show's 100th episode.
Phoebe used to be a masseuse, but got fired when she got caught kissing a client. She tried catering with Monica, but it didn't work out. She became a freelance massuse and then eventually went to work in a spa.
Phoebe's first serious boyfriend was scientist David. It was quickly over when he received a grant to research in Russia. He first returned to New York six years later, but was only in town for a day. Pheobe was crushed when he left. Since then, David has been in and out of her life. He even proposed to her, but she said no.
Phoebe's second serious boyfriend was a police officer named Gary. They met when Phoebe found his badge and pretended to be a cop, but was caught when she tried to arrest him. They lived together for one day, until he shot a bird.
Her last and latest love is Mike Hannigan. They met when Joey randomly set them up. They got very serious, including exchanging keys, but broke up when Mike said he never wanted to get married again. Monica got them back together a few months later. Mike changed his mind about marriage and he and Pheobe tried proposing to each other three times until it worked. They were married outside Central Perk in the middle of winter. They decided in the final episode to start their family. Yea, Phoebe!
Did you know the spirit of an old woman once lived in Phoebe?
