A Decision Hinted

Lucy didn't know which was worse the fact that she wasn't ready to tell Carter that she wasn't ready to commit or that she thought he might be. When Lucy went to her mothers house, she thought it would be better to ask her.

"Mom, what do I do? I mean, I like him a lot but I don't know if I LOVE him."

"So don't tell him you do"

"I already did"

"Oh, that could be a problem"

"No kidding" her mom wasn't much of a help at this point.

"Look, honey, I can tell you that if he said he loves you he loves you. But that's only if you tell the truth as well. If you said that and you were lying, there's always the possibility that he was too."

"I hope not"

"Really?"

"I-I mean I hope so"

"no you didn't"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Lucy, come on you do love him"

"No I don't I LIKE him there's a difference"

"Which clearly you don't understand"

"Mom, come on how can I?"

"Simple boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Girl likes boy. Likes turn to love"

"I wish it was that simple"

"So do I dear, so do I"

**********************************

"Look John, if you love the girl great for you but if you told her that and you didn't mean it well then I really don't know what to tell ya"

"I know, I mean I thought I did but, now I'm not so sure"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that..I don't know."

"Johnny, look I'm gonna tell you this, in my experience women like to hear the truth"

"So I should tell her"

"No"

"What?"

"They like to hear the truth when its something good they're hearing"

"So where does that leave me?"

"what did you love about her?"

"Everything"

"Everything?"

"Well not the way she could get on my every nerve in a split second if that's what you mean"

"Yes! That's exactly what I mean."

"Huh?" Carter was puzzled and lost. He didn't know what to think. Or what to do.

"All I can say is you really are in love with her"

"How are you so sure of that?"

"You know every little thing she does that annoys you and that you like, how can't I tell?"

"Yea maybe I am" he still didn't sound enthusiastic about it. He just looked down at his hands and played with his fingers for a while.

"Go ask her out to dinner, my treat and tell her"

"Sure, why not"

"Great, now even though you hate dressin' up your going to have to for tonight"

"Where exactly are we going?"

"The crystal ball for the Regison Hotel"

"Oh ok, nice to know I've got good taste" he laughed at his own joke as did Tommy.

"So man what are you gonna wear?"

"Good question, I've got nothing"

"So I figured, my closets open when you need it, I'm almost positive we're the same size or around there"

"Why in hell are you doing this?"

"What can I say I like playing cupid" he pretended to shoot an arrow

"Thanks"

"Sure thing John go on, go call her" Carter walked to his room and called Lucy's number.

"...So I figured you might want to come"

"I'd love to but I've got nothing to wear"

"So we'll go shopping"

"Carter, you're forgetting where we work, I don't exactly have the money to buy a dress like that"

"Just trust me, I'll pick you up in half an hour ok?"

she giggled for a minute thinking over the answer..."Sure I'll see you then"

"Ok, you too bye"

"Bye" Lucy hung up the phone and sat on her bed. 'What am I doing?'

AN HOUR LATER

"So which one did you like better?" Lucy held up two dresses, one a black pearly shine material and another a white sleeveless somewhat suggestive number made of a thick cotton with a shawl to match with it. Lucy preferred the white one.

"The white one how about you? You're going to wear it you pick"

"I like the white one too" they thought alike. That was a step in the right direction.

"Ok, you ready to go?"

"Yea just let me get my wallet"

"No forget it Luce I've got it"

"You really don't have to"

"I want to"

"Ok" she gave in with a sigh. Now she would have this on her mind for a while.

After the Carter paid for the dress they went back to Tommy's house to get ready. Carter found a tux that was slightly big but not too easily seen, so he felt comfortable. Lucy didn't take too long to get ready. She had showered that afternoon so all she needed to do was put up her hair and get dressed and do her makeup which all in all, took no more than an hour. Carter pulled out a box. Thin, velvet and elegant looking box. He opened it for Lucy.

"Oh my goodness where did you get this?" she was in aw when she saw the diamond platinum necklace.

"It's my mothers she told me to give it to someone special since she figured I would never get married" he smiled.

"What made you do all this?"

"What?"

"The dress was enough now a necklace like this? Why?"

He thought hard about his answer.

"I wanted to" she was relieved he hadn't said the 'L' word. Though part of her told her she wanted him to say it. He didn't seem to care weather she wanted to hear it or not. "I love you"

"Really?" she was feeling small tears run down her face. He cleared them for her with his finger.

"Yea"

"I love you too" he felt the same tears well up in his own eyes.

"Where'd you learn to fix makeup like that?"

"When you live with a woman who is as emotional as my mom, you learn a few tricks" the two laughed. "Ready?" he asked after they cleaned up their faces.

"Yea, lets go" arm in arm the two set off for what was to be a rather enjoyable evening.
