On Friday night
the Cleveland Browns lost 27-23 but things seemed to be coming together.
The offense looked great. Tim Couch led the Browns first team with 163
yards passing, 1 TD and 1 INT. The interception came on the first
possession and looked to be a communication error. Unlike last week, Couch
did not get knocked around and he got to spread the ball around. Between
Couch, Detmer and Holcomb ten Browns receivers caught a pass. Jamel White,
James Jackson, and Ben Gay continued to battle for a spot on this team.
Phil Dawson did not look
impressive for the second week in a row. He missed two field goals a 48
and 54 yard attempts. On a positive note he did make a 33-yard field goal
and two extra points. Lenzie Jackson looked as though he secured up his
roster spot by showing his ability on all four special teams plays and as
a WR.
The Browns defense allowed
the first TD to be scored on them at the end of the second half when Tony
Banks threw a 2 yd TD pass to Donnell Bennett. But the Browns defensive
speed remains the most impressive thing to me this season. Dwayne Rudd
showed why the Browns went out and got him.
Tre Johnson and Ross Verba
were not very effective in there brief playing. However, the Browns line
in general played much better than they have all year and that helped
spring Couch's big night.
With a roster cut coming on
Tuesday there were many players fighting for a position. Butch Davis said
that the starters are going the see limited duty next Friday night, when
the Browns play the Carolina Panthers. It seems like there are going to be
some tough decisions facing the Browns coaching staff.
