Losing somebody you care about - 11.02.01

Rose: Mm, are you're hungry, Luke, because that sundae and this one looks dangerous.
Waitress: Good luck.
Rose: Thank you very much. Did you know that it is scientifically proven that hot fudge sundaes cure any sadness that you have going on inside?
Luke: What kind of scientist tested that?
Rose: I don't know. A very lucky one. Very lucky. You never know until you try. All right, all right. Oh, you know what? Let's make a toast - to Bryant, who taught us that life is kind of like a hot fudge sundae. It doesn't last forever, but it should be enjoyed. Okay? To Bryant and to life.
Luke: It's not working, Aunt Rose.
Rose: Yeah, I know, I know. Sometimes a sadness is so deep, it can't even be helped by a hot fudge sundae. It's not easy to lose somebody that you care about.
Paul: I know exactly what you mean.
Paul: Funny running into you, Rose. I've been trying to track you down.
Rose: Uh, well, we've come for a little high-calorie reinforcements. For the funeral. But it's not working. So I guess we should just get outta here.
Paul: Whoa, whoa, whoa. You've barely made a dent. I mean, what kind of people leave a perfectly good sundae sitting around here? Just please, please stay.
Luke: I can wait in the car.
Rose: No. Why wait?
Paul: Five minutes. Five minutes - that's all I ask, Rose.
Rose: Don't worry about it, okay? No, I'll take care of it. Don't worry. I -
Paul: Why won't you talk to me?
Rose: We're talking. See? I'll be right there, Luke!
Paul: Luke is fine. Tell me, what happened the night we went out? I mean, we were having a great time, weren't we?
Rose: The time of my life.
Paul: Okay, so tell me - I mean, it seemed like a good idea one minute. Next minute, it wasn't gonna work. What happened?
Rose: You know, this really isn't a good time -
Paul: No time seems to be a good time lately, Rose. Just tell me. Why did everything change all of a sudden?
Rose: Some things are just not meant to be.
Paul: And some things are. Just tell me what went wrong.
Rose: Maybe it's something that you can't fix.
Paul: Maybe it's something I can.
Rose: Oh. I gotta go.
Paul: Rose -
Rose: This really isn't a good - Luke, I'll be right there! I'm sorry.
Paul: Rose -

The "L" Word - 11.05.01/11.06.01

(Doorbell rings and Rose goes to answer it.)
Paul: Hello, Rose. You're not gonna tell me to go away, are you?
(Lucinda greets Paul.)
Paul: My mother sends her sympathies. I hope you know you have mine as well.
Lucinda: Thank you.
Paul: We also made a donation to the Memorial Hospital's Children's Fund for Bryant.
Lucinda: Oh, what a lovely idea. Thank you. Oh, Rose, maybe he'd like a drink. (clears her throat)
Paul: Scotch and soda.
Rose: Oh, well, we've got like eight different kinds of scotch. (Sierra walks by headed for the front door.) You could use a coat. It's a little chilly. Sorry. (Craig walks out after Sierra.) Oh - see, that's not it just rubs her the wrong way.
Paul: Yeah. That sounds familiar.
Rose: You've got - you've got to get your own scotch. I'm sorry.

Paul: Okay, I'll stay. Now I can accept that your feelings for me have changed, but do you have to avoid me completely?
Rose: Yeah, you're right. I know you have questions. And if you don't see what you want here, right here on this table -
Paul: Rose, I see what I want standing right in front of me, and I don't understand why I can't have it.
Paul: Come on, don't make a scene.
Rose: I've got like a million things that I have to do.
Paul: It will only take a minute.
Rose: You know what? This isn't really a good time.
Paul: Okay. All right, now stop. Just stop. I've been thinking of a way to change your mind about how you feel about me, and I just realized that I just need to be honest with you.
Rose: I think you're honest enough for both of us.
Paul: No, no, no, no. And this might not be the right place, and I'm sure it's not the right time, but what I'm trying to say is - and not very well - is that you, me, I -
Rose: Come on. Spit it out, hon. Come on.
Paul: Oh, all right. I've fallen in love with you.
Rose: Say that again?
Paul: I'm falling in love with you. Rose?
John: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What's going on?
Lucinda: Oh, my heavens.
John: Take it easy. What happened? What happened?
Rose: What?
John: Are you all right?
Paul: She fainted.
Lucinda: Let me get some water. Water, water.
Mitzi: What's with her? Is she okay?
John: Rose, how many fingers do you see?
Rose: Four.
John: That's right!
Rose: You know, you should - you should go.
Lucinda: Mitzi, forget the water. Paul, darling - Paul will get you some water, darling, won't you?
John: She should be all right.
Lucinda: All right. And it's just the strain of the day, or possibly she had no lunch. Why don't we elevate her feet, Mitzi? That's a good girl. We just elevate her feet, and John and I will go and get a cool cloth to put on her brow.
John: It doesn't take two people to get a cool cloth.
Lucinda: Did you learn nothing in sensitivity training?
Rose: Is he gone? Is he gone?
Mitzi: The coast is clear. Why the swan dive?
Rose: He said the "L" word.
Mitzi: Limousine?
Rose: What are you talking about? No, no. I mean, how am I ever gonna leave this guy now that he said something like that?
Mitzi: Simple - you don't.

(Paul walks back in through the front door.)
Mitzi: There he is. Go. Go now, before you chicken out.
Rose: All right. Paul, there's something I need to tell you. (As Rose heads for the front door, Barbara steps in behind Paul.)
Barbara: Rose. I wanted to come and offer you and your family my condolences. It's so dreadful to lose someone you love.

Paul: You still haven't given me an answer.
Rose: Look - Paul, I wish I could tell you what you want to hear.
Paul: Just tell me how you feel.
Rose: It's not that I don't want to be with you, because I do.
Barbara: Paul? Paul? Where's my car. I want to leave now.
Paul: Good-bye.
Barbara: You're not driving me?
Paul: I will be glad to drive you home as soon as I finish my conversation with Rose.
Barbara: Ah, Rose. Oh, yes, of course. This has been a very difficult for you, hasn't it? I'm surprised your father hasn't flown in. How is he?
Rose: Fine, thank you.
Paul: I'm sorry about that.
Rose: It's quite all right. You know, it's not that I don't want to be with you, because I do, but it's not gonna work. It's just - it's just wrong.
Paul: Why?
Rose: Because - because I don't love you. That's it.
Paul: You're lying.
Rose: Just take your mother home, okay?
Paul: When I told you how I felt, I saw the look in your eyes. I know something's going on here, Rose, and I'm not letting you go without a fight.

The Truth (most of it anyways) - 11.07.01

(Mitzi and Rose start for the door and run into Jack, who is on his way in.)
Mitzi: Sure. Hi, Jack.
Jack: Hi.
Mitzi: Are you gonna judge the cattle call for Barbara Ryan Originals?
Jack: No, I've got a meeting with Paul regarding another matter. Paul -
Paul: Thanks for coming. Good to see you.
Jack: No problem.
Paul: I hope Jack's not the only one here to see me this morning.
Rose: Lucinda thought it'd be best if I got the rest of Bryant's things, but Isaac isn't here. So - I didn't realize you had a little parade going on either.
Paul: Rose, we need to talk.
Rose: I'm so sorry.
Paul: Okay, we need to talk, but not here, not in the middle of this craziness.
Jennifer: Paul, hi. Is mom around?
Rose: Hey, Jen. How you holdin' up?
Jennifer: Okay, thanks.
Paul: No, mom's not coming to the audition.
Jennifer: Well, I was hoping she'd be here. That's the whole reason I came.
Paul: Well, you can hang around if you want.
Jennifer: Thanks.
Bonnie: Excuse me. Can I steal your sister for a minute?
Rose: I should get back to Lucinda.
Paul: No, no, Rose, please, don't go. There so much left unsaid, okay? Look, I got a lot I got to take care of here, okay? I won't be long. Stay. Promise you'll wait, okay? Okay, I'll be right back.
Rose: Okay.
Mitzi: You got that look in your eye, Rose.
Rose: He turns my knees to Jell-O.

Paul I'm sorry that took so long.
Rose: That's all right, that's all right. It gave Mitzi a chance to test the danish. I'm sorry, no jokes. No, this is very serious.
Paul: Yes, it is. Look, Rose, yesterday I was telling you how much I was falling in love with you, and I mean, it couldn't have been a secret. We both knew it was happening. And then, all of a sudden you changed your mind on me. Just tell me the truth.
Rose: The truth? The truth is a very complicated thing. You know there's three versions of truth - yours, the other person's and the real truth.
Paul: Did anyone threaten you?
Rose: Threaten me? No! What are - someone is going to threaten me?
Paul: I'm sorry. I just - I have a lot going on right now, and I don't know who or what to trust, but I know that something or someone got to you. Now tell me.
Rose: All right, you have the right to know that much. When you said that you were falling in love with me - the words back to you were right at the tip of my tongue. Right there - they were ready roll out of my mouth. But they didn't. Because I told a big lie when I said I didn't want you. And I lied not to hurt you, but because I was afraid of the look in your eyes when I tell you what I have to tell you.
Paul: What's that?
Rose: That the girl you're falling in love with was once arrested for prostitution.
Rose: It was the worst night of my life, and kinda the best in a way, too. The worst because if that guy wasn't a cop, then I would've backed out last minute, which, is what I probably would have done in the first place, and he would've got mad and maybe he tossed me into the Atlantic - also the best because he was a cop, and it made me stop and realize in my tracks and think I'm acting so crazy. It was a mistake, I mean, it was a mistake. I swear I kept my nose clean after that. That was it, just no shenanigans, nothin'. I was a really good girl, and if you don't tell me what's goin' in your head right now, I'm just gonna lose it.
Paul: I was thinking about The Lakeview, the night we were there. When I came back to the room, you were completely shut down. You've held on to this secret for a long time. What made you so afraid that night?
Rose: It's just that we were gettin' so close, you know? And I realized it wasn't fun and games anymore, and I started thinkin' with my head. Look at us, you are who you are, and I'm just a third-rate showgirl with a record.
Paul: No.
Rose: What do you mean no?
Paul: I mean there's more to it. Now be honest with me, did my mother have something to do with this? Did my mother have something to do with us breaking up?
Rose: So you want to know if your mom had something to do with us breaking up. Well, yes, of course, I mean, she did. She's Barbara Ryan, you know, she's rich and she's classy. And she's all the things that I'm not - oil and water, you know? Like us - you're Park Avenue, and I'm just Rose. I can't tell if you want to wrap your arms around me or just head on out of here and never look back.
Paul: Rose, do I have to remind you that I'm a guy who tried to kill his own father? I have baggage. You have baggage. We all have baggage. Regardless - what I want to say is - what I'm trying - (Paul gives up trying to put his feelings into words and just kisses Rose.) Wow. I have to get back to my publicist before he walks out on me. But are we okay?
Rose: Perfect.
Paul: I'll see you later.
Rose: Mm-hmm. You betcha.

You Wanna Get Lucky? - 11.08.01/11.09.01

Paul: Hey, look at you - you almost look happy.
Rose: I had a problem that I had to solve it's all fixed.
Paul: You don't deserve to have any problems in your life, Rose.
Rose: Remember that night that we were planning?
Paul: The uh - yeah, I remember. I keep dreaming about it. You kidding me?
Rose: You want to get lucky?
Paul: Don't tease me. You're not teasing me?
Rose: No. I'm not. So if you can get the room at The Lakeview, we can make a night of it - an all-night of it. You've been taking your vitamins, right?
Paul: Okay. Okay, we'll start all over. Tonight, the other night didn't even happen.
Rose: What night? What night?
Paul: There you go. Okay, we'll start at The Lakeview. And then, we'll - okay - um - first I gotta make a call.
Rose: Now? No you don't. No call.
Paul: I have to, my mother can't sleep if she doesn't know where I am. And I don't want her to worry, Rose.
Rose: She's not going to worry. Because I talked to her.
Paul: What?
Rose: Yeah, I went to see her. And I told her that we were together, we were seeing each other seriously.
Paul: What happened?
Rose: And I won her blessing.
Paul: How did that go?
Rose: Great. It did. It's great. We understand each other. We're on the same page. You know?
Paul: You mean no lectures about how there's no woman on the face of the earth good enough for her son?
Rose: No, nothing like that, just girl talk. She's too worried about the fashion show. It's good, right? We can focus on each other. Just relax. Okay?

Uninvited Guests - 11.09.01

Waiter: May I take your order?
Paul: Yeah, we'll have the Cristal.
Waiter: The Cristal? Yes, sir.
Rose: The Cristal? Very fancy-shmancy. I thought those eyeballs were going to pop out of his head to the olive plate.
Paul: Well, wait till you taste it. It's exactly what you always imagine champagne should taste like but almost never does.
Rose: Only the best for Rose D'Angelo.
Paul: That's right. Okay, what are you thinking?
Rose: Thinking about my junior high school play.
Paul: Really?
Rose: Yeah. You remind me of my pop.
Paul: Your pop?
Rose: I mean - because he always made me feel like a star - the best, no matter how much I messed up, especially the first time I went out on stage. I looked down, I saw all these people in the audience.
Paul: And you forgot your lines?
Rose: I forgot my name. I forgot the century we were in. I forgot the play. I forgot my dance routine. I forgot my lines, no sight of 'em.
Paul: It's hard to imagine you without - with stage fright.
Rose: Yeah. Worst moment of my life.
Paul: You having a little stage fright right now, Rose?
Rose: A little.
Paul: I'll cue you, okay? But I don't think you're going to forget your lines tonight.
Rose: I thought I'd messed up with you, here we are.
Paul: You're a fighter, Rose. And I admire that much about you. You know, you get knocked down, you pick yourself back up, and you keep on swinging. It's a gift.
Rose: You're my gift, best gift I ever got. I can't believe you're here with me, even after what I told you about myself.
Paul: And the same goes for you.
Rose: But if we can be honest with each other like this, I mean, we have a real chance. I think I need to pinch myself.
Paul: Allow me.
Craig: Hello.
Carly: Hello, Paul. Hello, Rose.
Rose: Hello.
Craig: Max, no other table?
Maitre D': No, I'm sorry, sir. We're totally booked.
Craig: Really? Well, what interesting geometry. You, me, Rosie, Paulie. Huh?
Rose: I'm going to go powder my nose.
Craig: Does she know?
Carly: Does she know what?
Craig: About you two.
Paul: Are you trying to be funny?
Craig: No, I'm trying to help, 'cause this lack of eye contact between you and Carly doesn't fool anybody.
Paul: Say what's on your mind, Craig?
Craig: Have you told Rosie you two are working together behind Barbara's back?

Carly: Good. Then let's just stop all this chatter between tables.
Craig: Yeah, we wouldn't want to offend Rosie, would we?
Carly: Got to be another table here, somewhere.
Rose (returning from the powder room): Try Mabel's.
Craig: And miss the innuendoes?
Rose: Ah.
Carly: Sit.

Paul: Just ignore him.
Rose: Yeah. You know, you know what, I'm not going to let a rat like him ruin the first night of our future together.
Paul: Well, sounds like a toast. To our beautiful future.
Rose: I'll say one more thing, and then I promise nothing else.
Paul: What?
Rose: Even Craig - even a guy like that - might have one standard left. What could he possibly see in a tramp like Carly?

Rose: I think the bubbles for the champagne have really cleared my head up because I just had a fantastic idea.
Paul: What?
Rose: Room service.
Paul: You read my mind. Check, please.
Rose: Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no.
Paul: What?
Rose: Your mom is here, and she looks like she's on a mission.

Paul: Mom, what are you doing here?
Barbara: Is that any way to greet your mother?
Paul: Well, why don't we go in the lobby?
Barbara: Oh, no, I don't want to interrupt your evening with Miss D'Angelo, but if you want to talk, I'll wait up for you. Oh, they make such a lovely couple. It makes you wonder why they perjured themselves. It's obvious they've been lovers for some time. (Barbara walks to Craig's table and clears her throat.)

Rose: Craig and Barbara? Wow. That's interesting. She must be up to something.
Paul: Well, whatever it is, it has nothing to do with us.
Rose: Good. I thought our evening would be interrupted.
Paul: Oh, no, not a chance. But if you could, could you wait for me upstairs?
Rose: Upstairs?
Paul: Yeah, I booked a room. The key's at the front desk.
Rose: Oh. Well, can't you come with me?
Paul: Yeah, you know, I just - I want to ask Carly what my mother said to Craig.
Rose: You think she's gonna tell you?
Paul: I can try. Rose, nothing is going to ruin this night. I promise.
Rose: Okay.

Getting Lucky - 11.09.01

Rose: I didn't hear you come in.
Paul: You look so beautiful.
Rose: I brought a little overnight bag just in case.
Paul: I didn't bring a thing.
Rose: Oh, well, that's okay. You come equipped.
Paul: Do you have any idea how bad I want you right now?
Rose: I'm getting that idea.
Paul: Well, much more than that.
Rose: Yeah?
Paul: Mm-hmm.
Rose: What's so special about little ol' me?
Paul: Your wicked sense of humor, courage, honesty. Your eyes when you're about to cry. When you laugh -your smell - your skin.
Rose: You know what? This is so and everything, but if you don't kiss me right now I'm going to nuts.

Morning After - 11.12.01

Rose: I just knew you'd be good.
Paul: How?
Rose: Oh, the way you walk, the way you talk you know, girls just know these things.
Paul: I knew you'd be good, too.
Rose: How'd you know that?
Paul: Same reasons.
Rose: Hey, where you goin'? Where you goin'?
Paul: Right here.
Rose: Hmm, okay. Thought maybe we could spend the entire day in bed.
Paul: Not gonna get an argument from me.
Rose: Oh, yeah? What am I gonna get? (cell phone rings) you can either, turn that phone off, or it's goin' out the window.
Paul: Hmm, last call. I promise, okay? It's Paul.
Carly: Hi, Paul. It's Carly. Listen, I just talked to Isaac, and he says he hasn't found the dress yet.
Paul: Um, okay. Thanks for letting me know.
Carly: What are you gonna do?
Paul: I'll go down there and look for it myself.
Carly: Paul, you do know that this dress anchors the entire line, right? You do know we need this dress for New York.
Paul: I know. They'll have it. Don't worry. I'll call you when I track it down.
Rose: Who was that?
Paul: Um, someone at work. I gotta go.
Rose: Huh? What are you talking about? It better be something important.
Paul: It's a missing dress.
Rose: Missing dress? How'd that happen?
Paul: I don't know. It must have been misplaced at the audition yesterday. I'm sure it's there. I just gotta go find it.
Rose: You expect me to be a good sport about this?
Paul: It'd be nice.
Rose: Except, you know, you just waited for such a long time to - I just thought we could linger a little bit.
Paul: I'm sorry, Rose. This is an emergency.
Rose: You have an emergency right over here, hon.
Paul: I promise I'll make it up to you, okay? As soon as I get back, we'll escape from the world for days. Okay?
Rose: Okay.
Paul: What is it?
Rose: Ah, it's just - I can't help thinking this is the way it's gonna be, you know. You running out on me, me running out on you, putting business before pleasure every single time.
Paul: I'm not gonna let that happen. And neither will you.
Rose: Am I gonna see you before you go to New York?
Paul: I don't know.
Rose: Don't come home with a model or anything.
Paul: Oh, you jealous?
Rose: Jealous? No, no. You can talk to a model if you want to, but I'll hunt her down. You know.
Paul: I'm not looking. You're the only woman for me.
Paul: Hmm-mm, I can't. I gotta go. You know - you know what's gonna happen if I stay here.
Rose: Oh, you know, you're an executive. You figure it out. A girl without a dress, naked in bed here or a dress? That's a tough decision, isn't it?
Paul: No, no. Gotta go. I gotta go.
Rose: Whoa.

The Slap! - 11.19.01

Paul: Rose! What are you doing here? Are you a sight for sore eyes!
Rose: You want sore? I'll give you sore. (Rose slaps Paul across the face.)
Paul: What the hell was that for?
Jack: I think I hear someone calling me.
Rose: Because you lied. You lied to me.
Paul: No, no -
Rose: Don't even try to - don't even try! It's going to make things worse. You didn't tell me you were working with Carly.
Paul: No, I didn't lie.
Rose: I don't how you call it back in prep school. Where I come from in New Jersey, dancing around the truth, dodging it, twisting it - no matter how you look at it, it's still lying! You got a chance now to tell the truth? Did Carly design the dresses for tonight's show?
Paul: Yeah.
Rose: Oh, great. So now I know, lucky me.
Paul: Rose -
Rose: Why didn't you just tell me the truth? Was Carly the one that called you this morning, gotcha out of bed so fast?
Paul: Yes, but it wasn't - no -
Rose: You didn't trust me enough to tell me the truth.
Paul: It wasn't trust, it was business.
Rose: Business? Okay, let's say it was business. What I don't understand is why I wasn't involved. We've been mixing business with pleasure all along here! I mean, wasn't I the one that got you the picture of Carly and Craig kissing? Wasn't I the one to tell you to get a ghost designer to help your ma? That was your business, Paul, and I was involved until Carly became involved.
Paul: Rose, tonight had nothing to do with us. Believe me, what we have -
Rose: No, no, what we had preppie, is over.
Paul: Rose, no. No, no. I have to explain.
Rose: No! I'm tired of waiting around for guys who lie. I thought you were different.
Paul: I am.
Rose: No, honey, you lied. We're not suppose to have secrets. You held out on me.
Paul: No, no, it was a - it was not a secret.
Rose: I done so much, you know? I've done so much. I've told you so much about my life. Do you know how hard it was? What I've - the things that I have done. I have done so much just so that I could be with you. So much. I thought I was everything to you. I thought all you wanted was me. I guess that was too good to be true.
Paul: It is true.
Rose: No. What's true, honey, is that you're a liar.
Paul: No, no, I didn't Rose. I - I - compartmentalized. It's something I do because I have to. I got too much coming down on me - my mother, work -and you - things get messy. And I wanted to keep you separate from everything that was -
Rose: We made love. That put you in all my compartments, whatever - love, life, play, work or whatever - it put you in my life. I guess it wasn't the same for you.
Paul: You know, I loved you enough to forgive you for one lousy mistake. Now I screw up, and you're ready to walk out of the door. I think you got it backwards, maybe it wasn't the same for you.

He loves me! - 11.20.01

Paul: Rose, I'm sorry. I -
Rose (surprises Paul with a kiss): Consider that a down payment.
Paul: Oh, I can't wait to be alone, but I gotta - I got something I gotta take care of.
Rose: Now what?
Paul: My mother slashed some of the dresses back there, and I gotta find a way to cover the gap in the show.
Rose: Oh. Well, maybe there won't be a gap. Right? Mitzi and I - we're very handy with a needle.
Paul: No, I don't know if there's anyway they can be saved.
Rose: We worked on costumes all the time, right between shows in Atlantic City.
Paul: Okay. Well, if you two can give it a shot, do that. 'Cause I don't want any of our own people doing it. Jack's got my mom behind closed doors.
Mitzi: It's under control. All right? You go, make like a big wig.
Rose: We'll handle the rest.
Paul: Okay. I .
Rose: He loves me.
(Mitzi giggles.)

Paul: I don't know how to thank you. (gives Mitzi a kiss on the cheek)
Mitzi: Oh. That works for me.
Paul: The clothes are perfect.
Rose: Thank you. What we couldn't fix, they're never gonna notice from the runway.
Paul: What would I ever do without you?
Mitzi: I guess Rosie's good for something besides high kicks.

Go figure - 11.21.01

Paul: Now, I know I look nervous, but -
Rose: No, no. Not at all. I didn't notice that. Did you notice that?
Carly: Nope.
Paul: But I never doubted for a second that this show would be a success.
Rose: Oh, yeah? Even when your mom was backstage slicing up the clothes rack?
Paul: Even then, I knew the show was gonna be a success.
Carly: Oh, really? How is that?
Paul: Because we had a great line, great models, and I'm way too young to be thinking about retirement right now.
Carly: I never dreamed that I would end up on that runway tonight, Paul. Thank you so much.
Paul: Well, you've got to thank Rose and Mitzi, too. Because if it weren't for them fixing the clothes, the show would've fizzled out.
Carly: Okay. Rose, thank you.
Rose: Oh, you're welcome.
Carly: I guess you're not as heartless as I thought you were.
Rose: Oh, you either. I'm not letting my guard down with you, I'll tell you that much.
Carly: Well, the jury's still out -
Paul: Okay. Oh, wait. Is anybody hungry? Are you hungry?
Rose: I could eat.
Paul: Let's say we go.
Craig: Allow me to kiss the hand of the fashion world's newest star.
Paul: This is a private party, Craig. You weren't invited.
Carly: Yes, he was. He's with me.
Paul: Okay, Carly, it's not up to me to choose your friends, but if you insist on hanging out with him, you're going to have to do it alone. Rose?
Carly: My, my. What a short memory you have, Paul. If Craig hadn't told you Barbara was in the dressing room, we'd have nothing to celebrate right now.
Rose: Wait, what was Jack Snyder doing back there, modeling shoulder holsters?
Carly: No one asked your opinion.
Rose: Nobody asked this guy to be here, either.
Craig: I take exception to that, Rose.
Rose: You'd take anything that's not nailed down.
Paul: Okay, all right. This is a business event, not a boxing match or karate tournament.
Carly: I'll settle for two out of three.
Rose: Oh, any time, girl.
Paul: That's enough, okay? That's enough. Craig is Carly's friend. Just stay out of my way. I'm going to go speak with the reporter from W.
Rose: All right.

Rose: Hey, come on. You wanna take a break? We can eat a couple olives off the buffet table.
Paul: I would love to, but I gotta work the room. Some of these journalists have syndicated columns.
Rose: Oh, all right. You sure you're okay with everything that happened with your ma tonight?
Paul: Yeah. I did what I had to do.
Rose: Well, that's one way to look at it.
Paul: You have another?
Rose: Someone you love is hurting, and you're pretending that you're okay.
Jennifer: Hey. Have you heard from mom? Is she all right?
Paul: Oh, yeah. Jack took her back to Oakdale. Hey, will you excuse us for a minute?
Rose: Oh, yeah, sure. Fine.

Paul: Jen was right.
Rose: No, no.
Paul: My concern wasn't for my mother. It was for B.R.O.
Rose: No, no. You had a job to do. You had a lot on your shoulders. No, you did the best you could, honey.
Paul: If it was my best, why do I feel so ashamed of it?
Rose: Life isn't always cut and dried, you know? Sometimes you have two lousy choices, and you still gotta pick one.
Paul: You're a forgiving person, Rose. But that's not what I need right now.
Rose: You need another slap? I'll do it. I mean, I'll do it if that will help.
Paul: What I need to do is look at the truth. I saved my mother's company, but I might have lost her in the process.
Rose: I know you're worried about your mom and the way she ran out of here. You have every right to, but I'm telling you, she's going to be fine.
Paul: That's what I've been trying to tell myself for months, but she's been through so much -
Rose: Oh, I'm so tired of hearing that.
Paul: Well, it's true, Rose.
Rose: I know. We've all been through so much, you know? It's not what we've been through that matters. It's how we come out on the other side of it.
Paul: You know what? She looks in the mirror, she doesn't even recognize the face she sees anymore.
Rose: All right, I'm not underestimating what happened to her. But one thing I've learned is she's a tough cookie - tough as a $2 steak.
Paul: No, I made it worse tonight, Rose. I was ruthless, uncaring, everything I despise.
Rose: You think your mom's a savvy broad?
Paul: I wouldn't put it in those words, but yeah.
Rose: Of course not, but I'm telling you the truth what's gonna happen in a couple of months. She's gonna be back to herself, drawing the way she used to be, and she's going to stop and think. If Paul doesn't hire Carly Tenney, I lose my company.
Paul: Look, Rose, I know you're trying to make me feel better, but I just can't stop thinking that -
Rose: What?
Paul: I was acting like a Stenbeck. I would have done anything to get what I wanted.
Rose: You are not your father's son.
Paul: Look, I'm not even sure about that. I don't know how you could be.
Rose: Because I don't fall in love with people like that.
Paul: Rose, I -
Rose: Stand back. I don't want you getting all mushy on me.
Paul: Why not?
Rose: Because I'm kind of going there myself, and one of us should keep our head on straight.
Paul: You know, no matter what happens or who gets in our way, we always wind up together.
Rose: You noticed that, too? Go figure.
Paul: I don't want you to go figure. I want you to surrender.
Rose: You got a white flag? We can wave it together.

Rose's Favorite Pastime - 11.26.01

Rose: Hey, you know what they say - it's a sin to drink your morning coffee without a decent bagel in this town.
Paul: I will never get tired of seeing your face bright and early in the morning. You were so cute this morning when I left.
Rose: Oh, thank you.
Paul: You were sleeping so peacefully.
Rose: Yes, I was. But, you know, sleeping next to you, I'm getting used to that. I woke up, but you were gone. Very lonely. So what's the story, morning glory?
Paul: The phones are ringing off the hook.
Rose: Ah!
Paul: Yes, they are. The show was an unqualified success.
Rose: Oh, look at you, hitting a home run like that. They're going to throw a big parade for you back in Oakdale.
Paul: Well, Rose, I was - I was thinking.
Rose: Oh, that's very dangerous.
Paul: What if we didn't go back?
Rose: All right. We could stay a couple days. Sight see, maybe? See my pop.
Paul: Huh-uh. No, I was thinking something more permanent. How would you like to move to New York?
Paul: You could get a job here at B.R.O.
Rose: Oh.
Paul: We could work together, play together. We'll start everything off with a whirlwind trip to Europe. We'll stop by every B.R.O. office and tell them we're back on top.
Rose: Oh, really? Meanwhile, we avoid your ma. Which is the point, right? Look, I don't know how I feel about shoving off on this life together to avoid your ma.
Paul: I'm not avoiding her! I mean, you saw what happened. She went crazy. It was my fault.
Rose: What?! Wait a minute. No, no, no. No one asked Barbara to show up here and act like a maniac. She's slashing everything, all the clothes she could get her sights on.
Paul: I don't blame her.
Rose: Why not? You wanna be mad at me? Fine. But I think you've been RSVPing to that pity party she's been throwing ever since you came back in town.
Paul: It's not that cut-and-dry, Rose.
Rose: No? Really?
Paul: No.
Rose: She's got kids that love her. She doesn't want to talk to them. She's got this beautiful house that she lives in - a mansion - and she won't let anybody come over. Now, you have profits showing in her company that she's never seen before. So, what are you running from?
Paul: I - I guess part of my decision has to do with James being back in town. I mean, Jack thinks it's only a matter of time before he does something dirty. Look, I don't want either one of us to be there when that happens.
Rose: Let the old man do his worst. You can handle it. Look what you did with B.R.O., dealing with your crazy parents. It's a cinch.
Paul: Yeah, I'd like to think so.
Rose: And also you gotta think about this, too. If you don't go back to Oakdale, Craig and Carly are gonna take your company away from you. They're gonna just - take it right out of your pocket.
Paul: You really look out for me, don't you?
Rose: Well, it has become one of my favorite pastimes. Look, I will go anywhere in the world, world with you, Paulie. But for the right reasons. And I want to go home with you, of course.
Paul: Home, being Oakdale.
Rose: Mm-hmm. I'm not messing this up. A guy like you comes around like once every 25 years.
Paul: A woman like you is even more rare. You're on my side, but yet, you keep me thinking.
Rose: Mm-hmm. My pop says that's a woman's job. So, it's up to you. I mean, it's your decision, of course.
Paul: I know, I know.
Rose: So, aren't we gonna enjoy these bagels on the way to the airport?
Paul: Oakdale, here we come. But -
Rose: Aw.
Paul: We're still going to Paris, by the way.
Rose: Really? Okay.
Paul: Come on.
Rose: Oh, goodie.

Visit to Mommy Dearest - 11.26.01

Barbara: Well, I certainly didn't expect to see you two. I imagined you'd still be celebrating your victory from last night.
Rose: Orders are goin' through the roof. How you feelin', Barbara?
Barbara: Betrayed. Under siege. Sad that my son has deceived me after everything we've been through all these years.
Paul: Sorry about that, mom. I didn't think I had a choice.
Barbara: You always have choices in life, Paul. The trick is making the right ones.
Paul: Well, some decisions need to be made on where we go from here.
Barbara: Meaning you and me, or B.R.O.?
Paul: Both, actually. I wanna move corporate headquarters to Oakdale. Keep New York office, to serve that region.
Barbara: I've often thought about moving the front office to Oakdale. I'm all for that. Now what about us? Can you possibly forgive me for my behavior last night?
Paul: I can if you can.
Barbara: That's a possibility. And if Rose can spare you, my son and I can have dinner together tonight and possibly right this ship.
Paul: Maybe tomorrow. Rose and I are meeting with a realtor tonight.
Barbara: Of course, more office space.
Paul: Yeah well, that and - I've been thinking it's probably best for everyone if I move out of here.
Barbara: And move in with Rose?
Paul: That's the plan.
Barbara: Is this some kind of punishment for my bad behavior?
Paul: Since when is me deciding what I wanna do with my life a punishment for you?
Barbara: You're abandoning me, Paul.
Rose: Hey, that's not fair, Ms. Ryan.
Paul: I blame myself for what you did last night. I lied to you about what was going on with the company. I thought there'd be more time to prepare you for the decisions I was making.
Barbara: You thought of me? How comforting.
Paul: Oh, now don't pull that on me, mom. I was trying to save your company! I did save your company. I mean, you have a future as a designer again. Whereas before, you were - look, I wanna have a better business relationship with you, mom, and the only way we can do that is if we separate the business from the personal.
Barbara: That must be music to your ears, Rose.
Paul: Don't bring Rose into this.
Rose: Ah, it's okay. I know this is very difficult for you to accept. It's very easy to see me as the enemy here, because you think I'm stealing your son. But this is Paul's decision.
Paul: And it's not up for discussion. Mom, I love you. And I've never done anything to hurt you, but I will live my life my way - the way I want and with whom I want.
Barbara: Apparently so.
Paul: And it's time for you to start living your life for yourself. You're gonna get reconstructive surgery soon. You're gonna be as beautiful as ever, be able to face the world again. And I will stay here until I find a place. But after that -
Barbara: Go. I understand. You don't wanna be late for a real estate agent.
Paul: It's gonna be okay. I promise.

Moving in together? - 11.27.01

Maitre d': Are you sure this is suitable for you, Mr. Ryan? I'd be happy to bring you to another table.
Paul: Oh, no, no, this is fine.
Maitre d': Excellent. May I offer you a complimentary glass of Merlot to start?
Paul: Sure, that'd be great.
Maitre d': And a Rusty Nail for the lady?
Rose: You got a good memory, my friend. Make sure the bartender puts some hair on it this time, would ya?
Maitre d': I most certainly will. Anything else?
Paul: Yes. Our realtor is gonna be meeting us, Ms. Cochran. So could you show her to our table when she arrives?
Maitre d': I'd be delighted. And may I say, Mr. Ryan, congratulations on your success in New York.
Rose: There it is. That's the reason - that's the reason he's being so nice to you.
Paul: Why is that?
Rose: He heard about New York. You're a big success. You're gonna be tippin' big.
Paul: Possible.
Rose: Everybody loves a winner.
Paul: I know I do.
Rose: Aw. Listen, I think we're wearing her down.
Paul: Who?
Rose: Your ma. You told her we were gonna live together, and she was, like, civil about it.
Paul: I know. It didn't seem like her at all.
Rose: Could be she's changin'.
Paul: Could be.
Rose: Or - ?
Paul: Or she's being coached by my father.

Ms. Cochran: Take a look at this - in my 20 years in real estate, I've never seen such a lovely property.
Rose: Is that a moat?
Ms. Cochran: A small one.
Rose: Ah.
Ms. Cochran: But it can be drained.
Rose: Oh. I like the one with the landing strip. Can we talk?
Paul: Yeah, that's a good idea. We'll call you.
Ms. Cochran: You know, I can't promise that these properties will remain available.
Rose: Oh, bunny, you know us. We live dangerously.
Ms. Cochran: You're a lovely couple. Call me when you're ready.
Paul: Okay.
Rose: I knew it.
Paul: What?
Rose: She has a fin. There's a fin sticking out of her suit.
Paul: Look, Rose, I'm glad you got rid of her, 'cause I don't know if I can concentrate on real estate right now.
Rose: Why? What happened?
Paul: I just got off the phone with Margo down at the station to find out if my father was still there. It turns out my mother refused to press charges. They released him last night.
Rose: Why she didn't tell us?
Paul: Could be all sorts of reasons, like maybe they're working together, as I suspected.
Rose: Wait - that guy, he's like a mummy that won't stay in the box.
Paul: Yeah. Anyway, it didn't look like you and the realtor were getting along.
Rose: Oh, it wasn't that so much. Looking at these houses and property and - it made me realize somethin' about you and me livin' together.
Paul: What's that?
Rose: I don't wanna do it.
Rose: It's not what's goin' on with your mom or your father. That's not what this is about. You know - see, I've lived with people before, and I don't want with you what I had with them.
Paul: I'm not following you, Rose.
Rose: What we have together now is so good. You know, it's strong. We're building something together for our future. I don't think I could do that washing dishes and taking out the garbage.
Paul: Those things are a part of life.
Rose: Yeah. Not the best parts, you know? Remember those movies, old movies with Loretta Young and Claudette - some French girl?
Paul: Yeah, I know what you mean.
Rose: I used to watch those movies with my ma. You know? Loretta Young - she's, like, perfect. You know, hair's always perfect, in the kitchen cooking something, dressed to the nine seven days a week. And then the doorbell rings and there he is - Clark Gable or Cary Grant. You know, he's got flowers and the music swells and the world blurs in this wonderful happiness. See, that's what I want with you. I want romance all the time.
Paul: And I'd give it to you, Rose. I may not be Cary Grant, but have I or have I not proven that I can buy flowers with the best of them?
Rose: Yeah. You sure have. Are you disappointed?
Paul: Not at all.
Rose: Why not?
Paul: Because if living together isn't right for you, then it's not right for me, either. I don't see it as a setback at all. I see it as simply building a history together. Whatever you want, whatever you need, that's what I'm gonna give you. 'Cause, sweetheart, if you're happy, I'm happy. And that's the way it's gonna be for a very, very long time.
Rose: If you don't kiss me right now, I'm gonna smack ya. (cell phone rings) Cell phone of yours - I really wanna throw it out.
Paul: All right, I'll get rid of 'em. Hold on.
Rose: Lipstick.
Paul: Yeah, this is Paul. She is? Doing what? Okay. All right, Devon. Thanks - thanks for letting me know. Bye. Carly's gonna be on TV tonight.
Rose: Why? She rob a bank?
Paul: No. She's giving an interview with Molly McKinnon about the B.R.O. fashion show in New York.
Rose: Who knows what that broad's gonna say.
Paul: Yeah, you're right. If we hurry, we can get there before she goes on.
Rose: All right. Ah, ah, ah. You owe me a smooch.
Paul: You got it.

My Everything - 11.28.01/11.29.01

Rose: Hi.
Paul: Hi.
Rose: Sorry I'm late.
Paul: No, you're fine. I'm early. I gave Carly a lift.
Maitre d': Ms. D'Angelo, Mr. Ryan, right this way.
Rose: Thank you. Me, a regular at The Lakeview.
Paul: Do you mind?
Rose: Thank you. Do I mind? Now I know what it's like to go first class all the time. I hope I don't like it too much.
Paul: You deserve to go first class because you are first class, Rose.
Rose: Thank you, and a little country, with antlers and a jukebox, actually.
Paul: Okay. Keep dropping hints, and when it starts to make sense, whistle.
Rose: Lily found a place for me.
Paul: Oh, okay. Great.
Rose: Yeah, you're gonna love it. It's like quirky decor. I love it. I can't wait for you to see it.
Paul: Well, me, either. Thank you.
Rose: Oh. Champagne?
Paul: Yes. It was for my good news, but now, it's a shared celebration.
Rose: You found a place, too?
Paul: Yes. A few flights up. A real sweet suite. So we've got some housewarming to do.
Rose: Mm-hmm. Wow. One little conversation, and our lives change forever.
Paul: How do you feel about seeing more of each other?
Rose: How much more is there to see?
Paul: You know what I mean.
Rose: Right.
Paul: We need to make time to be together.
Rose: Like pen each other into each other's schedules?
Paul: Yeah. You just wait to see how fast this new job devours your free time.
Rose: Really? Well, I am available for meals and all night long.
Paul: I think I can squeeze that in somehow.
Rose: Okay, good. Hey (pointing to Jack and Carly's table), somebody's got designs on your designing woman.
Paul: Yeah, Carly. She said she's gonna meet Jack this afternoon.
Rose: I wonder if she told Craig.
Paul: Craig knows nothing about it, and that's the way I like it.
Rose: You like it?
Paul: Mm-hmm.
Rose: What did you do? What did you do?
Paul: Nothing. Nothing. All right, not much.
Rose: Okay.
Paul: I just told her the truth, that Jack was the reason why she got credited at the show. And hopefully she'll realize if her life's going in the right direction, Jack's the reason why.
Rose: She should know that. She should know that, right?
Paul: Yeah.
Paul: Rose, you're staring.
Rose: I'm sorry. Aren't you curious what's goin' on between the two of them?
Paul: No. I wasn't playing cupid with them. I just gave them a friendly nudge in the right direction.
Rose: The direct opposite of Craig Montgomery. Very good.
Paul: So anything interesting going on over there?
Rose: Well, they do have that look in their eye.
Paul: What look?
Rose: That look. But no visible signs of hanky-panky.
Paul: Hmm. You mean, none of this?
(Paul leans across the table and kisses Rose.)
Rose: That's exactly what I was talking about.

Rose: I knew Carly would stay true to form.
Paul: Form being?
Rose: Jack the Gent is replaced by Craig the Creep. That broad is always going to pick the bad apple.
Paul: Let's just hope you're wrong.
Rose: But me - me on the other hand, I got it right this time.
Paul: You know what I'm thinking.
Rose: Yeah, the contract.
Paul: No, it's not that.
Rose: The contract, you gave it to Carly. Then why does Craig have it?
Paul: If he thinks he's going to run her career …
(Paul walks over to Carly's table.)

Rose: So I was thinking maybe gold lame on the walls and some sequins. What do you think?
Paul: Nice.
Rose: Hey. Hey, hello?
Paul: Huh.
Rose: You haven't been listening I've been talking about - my new home there.
Paul: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, I just - I wanna hear all about it, 'cause I'm gonna be spending a lot of time there. So, go ahead.
Rose: Yeah, no, later. You got a lot on your mind right now, so - I know I need to talk to my mom about this contract with Carly.
Paul: Until I do, it's -
Rose: Oh. Yeah, and I need to get back to Lucinda. And she's not paying me for hanging out with my guy.
Paul: Your "guy," huh?
Rose: Mm-hmm.
Paul: So that's what I am?
Rose: Yeah. And a whole lot more. And you know what it adds up to?
Paul: You do the math.
Rose: Everything. You're my everything.
Paul: Well, that makes us even. Because you're definitely mine.
