Nancy is the best - 10.2.01/10.3.01

Rose: Paul!
Paul: Rose.
Rose: Hey. Lucinda said you were looking for me. I was shopping.
Paul: Yeah, I need some advice for B.R.O.
Rose: Oh. You wanna talk business? All right. I'm all ears.
(Abigail starts down the aisle, and Paul notes her dress.)
Paul: Great dress.
Rose (assuming he is referring to her dress): Oh, thank you.
Paul: This is what you get for sitting next to a man in the fashion business. (Carly begins her walk down the aisle, and once again, Paul only has dresses on his mind.) Look at that neckline. That color is beautiful.
Rose: Sure you're not talking about the model?
Paul: Hmm?
Paul: The wedding gown is amazing.
Rose: The girl next to you is wearing a gown, too.
Rose: I'm just warning you that I do cry at weddings. But you've already seen me do that, so -
Paul: Hey, Rose, do you think there's any way you could find out who designed these dresses?
Rose: Before or after the "I dos"? Excuse me.
(Rose gets up and moves to an empty seat away from Paul.)
Paul: Whoa, whoa. No, no. Rose.
Nancy: Rose, what a particularly lovely dress.
Rose: Thank you. At least somebody noticed.

Tsk Tsk Paul - 10.3.01

Paul: Rose, Rose -
Rose: Hey. Long time no see. What's the matter? You ran out of paper?
Paul: Okay, okay. Okay, look, I'm sorry. Okay, I was a jerk. I was preoccupied. I didn't even - I didn't even tell you how beautiful you look.
Rose: Tell me now.
Paul: Better yet, I'll get some champagne and we'll toast you. Hmm?
Rose: I'll toast you back.
Paul: Okay. I'll be right back. Don't move, okay?
Rose: Right here.

Everyday happenings in Hoboken - 10.4.01

(Dante emerges, holding a knife to Rose's throat.)
Holden: Oh, no.
Dante: Give me the boy! Or your sister dies.
Hal: Stay calm Grimaldi. No one wants to hurt you.
Dante: Give me the boy, Signora. Or your sister dies.
Paul: Hey, hey, hey, you - just let her go. You won't get away with this.
Margo: He's right. Listen, just put the knife down and keep yourself from getting hurt.
Lily: You get nothing - nothing out of hurting Rose. Absolutely nothing. You'll never go back to Malta.
Dante: Perhaps not. But if I have to suffer, then I won't suffer alone. Ten seconds, Signora! Ten seconds. Make your choice.
Luke: Don't hurt her!
(Luke breaks free from his parents and rushes towards Rose and Dante.)
Holden: Luke!
(A gunshot is fired from behind Carly. Craig knocks Carly to the ground to get her out of the line of fire. Dante is shot, and Rose falls to the floor.)
Lily: Luke!
Rose: Luke hey, hey, Luke!
Paul: Rose, Rose, you okay?
Rose: Oh, yeah. Things like this happened in Hoboken every day.

First Kiss!!! - 10.4.01

Paul: How's your head?
Rose: It's still there.
Paul: Want me to get you a warm cloth?
Rose: Don't bother, no.
Paul: You know, Rose, someone threatened your life tonight and the life of someone you care about. You don't have to act like it's just any other day.
Rose: It's - you know, I've seen some bad guys in my day, but that Dante takes it to a whole other level, you know. You look at him, it's like looking in the eyes of pure evil.
Paul: Yeah. It's like that with some people.
Rose: You're talking about your father?
Paul: The infamous James Stenbeck. Thank goodness I'll never have to see that face again. You're a hero, rose. I am proud to know you.
Rose: Yeah? I should get a knife stuck in my throat more often, then.
Paul: You never cease to amaze me.
Rose: There's a lot more where that came from. Stick around.
Paul: I intend to.
(Paul kneels in front of Rose and tenderly kisses her.)

Paul, darling! - 10.16.01

(Doorbell rings)
Lucinda: Whoever it is, you're otherwise engaged.
(Rose answers the door.)
Paul: Well, you look lovely.
Rose: Oh, thank you. This is something I pulled out of the back of the closet.
Paul: I wasn't talking about the dress.
Lucinda: Well, Paul, darling! How wonderful to set eyes on you this evening.
Paul: It's nice to see you, too, Lucinda.
Lucinda: And your mother? Is her recovery proceeding correctly?
Paul: Yes, she's improving. Thank you for asking.
Lucinda: Well why wouldn't I? I'm very concerned about her.
Paul: Rose, we really need to go. We have reservations at the Lakeview.
Rose: Yeah, we don't wanna break those reservations.
Lucinda: Have a wonderful evening, Rose. Make sure he brings his mother to the meeting. If we don't have the votes, we're buried. Enjoy.
Rose: Hurry up.

Paul's a gent - 10.16.01

Rose: Is that ours?
Paul: Yeah. I hope champagne's okay.
Rose: Oh. Mm, yes.
Paul: I consider it fit for the occasion.
Rose: Oh, I didn't know it was New Year's Eve. I must have forgotten all about Thanksgiving.
Paul: Well, I consider tonight a celebration. A time to appreciate the strange and wonderful forces that brought us here together.
Rose: Oh. I'll drink to that.
Paul: Me, too. (the two kiss)
Rose: Mm. Not bad. Can I another sip?
Paul: Yeah. That's what it's here for.
Rose: Mm. Must've gone to my head a little bit.
Paul: Yeah. After we kissed at Jake and Molly's wedding, I almost forgot my name.
Rose: I had that same problem.
Paul: Rose, I don't think you realize how terrific you are.
Rose: Oh, I know what kind of person I am. But don't get fooled, you know? I'm no society deb. I got more rough edges than an old bookcase.
Paul: No, you're a phenomenal person. Ever since I met you, ever since the first moment at the airport, you've continued to amaze me over and over again.
Rose: Maybe we should order something. Yeah. Oh. Uh, we could have - fish. Or the meat. We could have the meat. Or we could just get a room.
Lucinda: Rose?
Rose: Oh - my.
Lucinda: Have you discussed it with him yet?
Rose: Ms. Walsh!
Lucinda: Oh, for heaven's sake. I knew I'd have to do it myself. Champagne! Oh, wonderful. But put it aside. We have work to do.
Paul: Lucinda, I'm sure what you have to discuss is important, but -
Lucinda: It is important. It's very important. Thank you so much, darling.
Rose: Ms. Walsh must be referring to the Worldwide stockholders meeting we were discussing, right?
Paul: Oh, yeah, that. Yeah. Rose was just filling me in.
Rose: Yes, about all the details. About how Craig is tryin' to push you out of CEO, Worldwide, pull dirty tricks behind your back.
Lucinda: So you see, it's absolutely essential. I need your mother to vote her shares for me.
Paul: Oh, well, I gave Rose my word that I would support you in any vote against Craig. So you can count on it.
Lucinda: But you do understand that she has to make a physical appearance. She must appear at the meeting. Can you get her there?
Paul: When did you say that was again?
Rose: Tonight. Tonight.
Paul: Oh, right. She'll be there.
Lucinda: Oh. Oh, well, that's an enormous relief. Do you mind if I have a little of this, dear?
Paul: Okay, Lucinda, I've done something for you. Now I need you to do something for me.
Lucinda: Mm. Good. Absolutely. What?
Paul: Go home.
Paul: Lucinda, Rose and I have been planning dinner for a long time. And we don't want business to interfere with it. So if you would, please?
Lucinda: Oh. You want to be alone.
Paul: Yes. Thank you.
Lucinda: All right. But I insist, when this is all over, you're gonna have a wonderful dinner on me.
Paul: Okay. It'll be a pleasure.
Lucinda: Rose, this guy's a gent.
Rose: Yeah, no kidding.
Paul: So -
Rose: Yep?
Paul: Where were we?
Rose: Well, I think we were talking about politics. Or a fabulous book.
Paul: No. No, I don't think that's what it was.
Rose: No? Well, it couldn't have been a girl suggesting a room together because, you know, what kind of girl would ever suggest a thing like that?
Paul: The kind of girl I'd like to get a room with.
Rose: Paul - that was a mistake. I mean, really. You kissed me on the lips. You know, the soft lips. It was like power surge.
Paul: You know, Rose, it was a wonderful suggestion. It was. But it's not the way that I see our relationship progressing.
Rose: It isn't?
Paul: I need more than a couple of hours together.
Rose: I hear Bermuda's really nice. Really nice for a weekend.
Paul: Well, unfortunately, I can't get away right now. But soon, probably when you least expect it, we'll be alone. Together.
Rose: Mm. And then look out.
Paul: Look out.

Tad problem at Worldwide Meeting - 10.17.01

Lucinda (sighs): You have finally graced us with your presence.
Rose: I need to talk to you about what happened at the Lakeview -
Lucinda: Where have you been?
Rose: Tonight. I - talking to Lily. Gave me some perspective on things.
Lucinda: Well, good. 'Cause she often does that. Where is Barbara?
Rose: She's on her way with Paul, I guess. I don't know.
Lucinda: You only guess? Oh, if you bollixed up this simple PR maneuver -
Rose: Hey, wait a minute. I have done more than you have - you can just a little appreciative of me. Or back off. I delivered Paul's mother to you. What more do you want? Oh, that came out wrong. Hi. Look who's here.
Lucinda: Paul, where's Barbara?
Paul: She's not coming.
Rose: What?! What are you talking about? She's gotta be here! What happened?
Paul: I'm not sure.
Craig: No Barbara? What a shame. What will we do without her?
Craig: I think we ought to get this party started, don't you, Lucinda? Wouldn't help to keep our friends waiting.
Lucinda: Right. Right. I'll be there momentarily.
Rose: Sometimes he deserves a nice, good crack in the head -
Lucinda: Where are you going?
Rose: I'm going to the meeting, of course.
Lucinda: No, you're not.
Rose: Why?
Lucinda: Because I'm going to stall, and you are going to think of a way to make Barbara get her tail in for the vote!
Rose: Hey, no, no! That meeting has been postponed because of me. I am the one who did that. So Craig would be running it already, this company, if it wasn't for me.
Lucinda: I'm gonna lose everything to that guy, to that man. Now, listen to me - you promised me - you promised me Barbara. You can deliver Barbara. I know you can do it. And if you can't deliver Barbara, darling, I hope you've kept your feathered boas fluffed up, because you may need them again. And I may need one, too.
Craig: A business, like any living organism, must change to survive. And Worldwide is long overdue for a change.
Paul: I've already tried. And I'm not gonna add any more pressure to my mother's life. Not for anyone.
Rose: I really didn't picture you as a guy that would turn your back on somebody.
Paul: I'm not.
Rose: Can we review the situation right now? Because of me, Craig dropped that lawsuit against you guys. If it wasn't for me, B.R.O. would be down to its B-R-A.
Paul: I know, I know. And I will always be grateful.
Rose: I don't want gratitude, okay? I need votes!
Paul: My mother's mind's made up, Rose.
Rose: Why? What happened? What changed to make her the president of the Craig Montgomery fan club?
Paul: It doesn't - doesn't matter, okay?
Rose: It doesn't matter? Can you tell me what it is, please? Maybe we can use it to our advantage. I can go over there and say, "please, pretty please, with sugar on top - "
Paul: Rose -
Rose: Just spit it out. Come on, honey.
Paul: My mother has some reservations about you.
Rose: What do you mean, she's got reservations about me? I see, okay. She doesn't want me going out with you. I'm not good enough for you? Is that what it is? It doesn't matter. I stick my neck out for her like that. She wants to cut my head off why? Why?
Paul: It doesn't matter, Rose.
Rose: "It doesn't matter." No?
Paul: No, it doesn't. My mother hasn't run my private life since I was 16. My relationship with you is none of her business.
Rose: Wow. So we have a relationship whether she approves or not?
Paul: Yeah. But I just - with all the stuff's been going through the past couple months, I don't wanna throw this at her right now.
Rose: I understand. That's why I'm gonna be the one to go talk to her.
Paul: Hmm-mm.
Rose: Not you.
Paul: No, no. Promise me you won't do that.
Rose: I've gotta do something, okay? Can't let that guy in there run this company, that reptile, after everything I've done -
Paul: Rose, I'll take care of it.
Rose: - To keep this company together.
Paul: I'll take care of it. I'm prepared to speak to those stockholders tonight and tell them all the corrupt things that Craig's been doing and how he tried to steal from my mother, okay? When I'm through, he'll be dead in the water.
Rose: Okay. All right. You're right. You better go in there and get a seat. A good seat. I'll be there in a second. I just wanna powder my nose. Oh, honey, I'm afraid that's not enough to turn the tide. Or save my hide. Paul Ryan, I hope you're a forgiving guy. Because you're gonna need it. You know, when you're in a relationship with somebody, you gotta be. Focus. Focus, Rose.

All's well that ends well (Sure...) - 10.18.01

Paul: Rose.
Rose: Hi.
Paul: I owe you an apology.
Rose: You do?
Paul: Yeah. When I realized where you'd gone when I asked you not to, I was furious.
Rose: Oh. Are you upset with me for going against your wishes?
Paul: How can I be? All's well that ends well, right? Someday you're gonna have to tell me how you did it.

Paul: Mom, I'll take you home, okay? Just give me a second. Rose -
Rose: Mm-hmm.
Paul: You and I have to celebrate.
Rose: Oh, we do?
Paul: Yes, we certainly do, just the two of us. How about dinner?
Rose: Have you ever known me to turn down dinner with you? I would love it.
Paul: I'll call you.
Rose: Call me.

A Rose for a Rose - 10.19.01

Rose: Go ahead. You know what? I don't care. If you think that Craig Montgomery can handle this company, that's fine. But I will not be blackmailed by you to stay away from your son. I like Paul. I like him, and I'm not gonna stop seeing him for you or anybody else.
Barbara: You lousy, lowlife, Jersey gutter -
Rose: Yeah, you got that right. I'm Jersey. I'm through and through. And I'm proud of it. You want to talk about class? You got about as much class as a broad with five inches of slip hangin' below her skirt. Your son has taken such good care of you since your accident. He's so sad. He's like given up his whole life for you. And what do you do? How do you repay him? You try to take away the little bit of life he's carved out for himself. How is he gonna feel when he finds out that you tried to take away all his choices right out from underneath him?
Paul: What's going on? Everything okay?
Rose: Should you tell your son what we were talking about, Ms. Ryan, or should I?
Barbara: Rose and I were just discussing our mutual distaste for Craig Montgomery.
Paul: Really? Mom, he did exactly what everyone expected him to do tonight. If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time getting upset about it.
Barbara: I know, but I - I don't think I'll ever fully recover from what he did to me and my life. And I - I think I'm tired and maybe a little emotional. I just want to go home.
Lucinda: Oh, Barbara. Barbara, you, I promise, will not regret your vote.
Rose: Aw.
Paul: A singular rose for a singular Rose.
Rose: Thank you.
Paul: And don't you forget. Tomorrow night, dinner, okay?
Rose: Mm-hmm.
Paul: We have a lot to celebrate.

Bryant's death - 10.24.01

Paul: How are you doing?
Rose: I've had better nights. Lucinda's in with Lily, and I've been making phone calls. I'm calling all the Walsh family. I mean, they're all over the place. I mean, half of them probably don't even know Bryant except for a picture on a Christmas card. But you gotta call them all, right? Come here alone?
Paul: Yeah.
Rose: Oh.
Paul: Mom's not coming.
Rose: Aw, give her time. Give her time. She'll come around. Give her time. She'll come around.
Paul: Yeah. In the meantime, what happens to my sister I mean, what do I say? "Mom's still not ready?" I can't do that.

Rose: Oh, there's your sister now. Gosh, she must be dying on the inside. Bryant was my roommate for a while. And he would just talk about her all the time Jen this and Jen that.
Paul: She loved him.
Rose: I really thought your mother would pull through tonight.
Paul: Yeah, so did I. I guess she's changed more than anyone realizes.
Rose: That's not helping Jen right now.

The Gazebo - 10.25.01/10.26.01

Rose: Morning, handsome.
Paul: Hey!
Rose: Hi. That's a really nice way to say hello.
Paul: What are you doing here?
Rose: Oh, you know, just checking up on you and your ma. I hope I wasn't too hard on her.
Paul: Too hard on her? No. You're the reason she went down to the hospital and spoke to her daughter. She should send you flowers.
Rose: Oh, it wasn't just me.
Paul: Yeah, it was. You worked a miracle. And no one, I mean no one's been able to do that - me, Hal, anybody.
Rose: You know, back in my old neighborhood, when a Jewish family is mourning, they cover all their mirrors. It's their way of saying, "It's not time for us right now. We've lost a piece of our heart. And there's no room for vanity." Vanity, see, that's - that's what was keeping your ma away from everybody. But she got past that. Obviously. So maybe it's my turn.
Paul: What? What do you have to get past?
Rose: You know what I'm going do, I'm going to confess. I'll come back later.
Paul: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Does this have something to do with me?
Rose: Yeah, honey. Big time.
Paul: Well, if you have a confession to make, I suggest you start right here.
Rose: All right. You see, I've been thinking - lot of thinking - what I've been going through since we lost Bryant, you know, dealing with Lucinda, and reading your ma the riot act. And yeah, it was for your ma, Bryant, Jennifer. And I was thinking, you know, the big chunk of the reason why I did it was for - for us.
Rose: What I meant when I said us is that I thought if I could play peacemaker with your ma, then she'd realize she has other family out there that she could depend on, and she wouldn't be so dependent on you. You know?
Paul: And, therefore, I'd have more time to spend with you?
Rose: Time. That's what it's all about, huh? Time. You lose a kid, you know, a kid like Bryant, it makes you hold on to every single second. You think they're gonna be around forever. You never think you're going to have to say good-bye.
Paul: I'm - I'm - not planning on going anywhere. Are you?
Rose: No. No.
Paul: Okay, okay. So let's just - let's make the most out of - of what have, okay? We'll not let anything get in the way of us doing what we want to do or going where we want to go.
Rose: All for that. Sure.
Paul: Okay? And I know that I need to make some changes. I've been pouring every ounce of my energy into B.R.O. and making sure my mother gets back on track.
Rose: You're not the only one to fault. You know me, crazy with Mitzi and Lucinda - dealing with Lucinda and Lucinda and Lucinda.
Paul: Okay. Look, look. Here. We'll make a pact, okay?
Rose: Yeah.
Paul: Okay. Nothing is going to get in our way, okay? We don't leave anything unsaid or undone anymore, okay? Especially with us.
Rose: All right.
Paul: I mean, of course I - I want B.R.O. to be a phenomenal success and for my mother to be happy again and for Jennifer to find out where she belongs.
Rose: You know what, though? You - you gotta think about yourself a little. What makes you happy?
Paul: I can only think of one thing that makes me happy - you.
Rose: I don't think I've ever meant that much to anybody.
Paul: Really? Well, glad I can be the first.
Rose: Who knew I had some firsts left in me.
Paul: I mean it, from every - ever since I met you, you somehow managed to unscramble every problem in my life. You know, and you've done it in a way that was selfless and without pushing your own agenda.
Rose: I don't know about that.
Paul: Yeah, I do. Rose, you're more than my lucky charm.
Rose: Paul, your mom and I, all right -
Paul: Yeah, my mom, is a different person now, since you gave her that kick in the keister last night.
Rose: Keister? Did you just say the word "keister"? I'm rubbing off on you my friend.
Paul: Yes, you are in every possible way.
Rose: There's something I should have told you before. You know how your mom did that 180 and voted for Lucinda at the stockholders meeting.
Paul: Yeah?
Rose: Well, we - I kind of made a deal.
Paul: What kind of deal?
Rose: Some call it "quid pro quo." Tit for tat. Anyway you look at it, it's a good old-fashioned extortion. See, your mom promised to vote for Lucinda if I didn't see you anymore - and I
Paul: So, uh, you promised my mother that you wouldn't see me again, right? In exchange for voting for Lucinda? All right. So, why are we here together?
Rose: I don't know. I think I'm goin' back on my word.
Paul: Why didn't you tell me earlier, Rose?
Rose: 'Cause I was sworn to secrecy. I misled your mom, and then I went back on my word. What a great person I am.
Paul: You know, that doesn't even sound like my mother. My father, yeah maybe, but my mother - I - I'm sorry, Rose.
Rose: Don't be sorry, I mean, it's hard for you ma, you know, she's been through so much with Craig Montgomery. It's very hard for her to trust somebody.
Paul: Look, don't - don't take it personally, okay? It's nothing against you.
Rose: Are you kidding me? She thinks I'm taking you away from her.
Paul: Oh, come on. Look, but I think what you said about my mother was - was true. What you said early. You know, she's changing. She - you know, you got - she went down there to see Jennifer. It's only a matter of time before she eases up on me.
Rose: What if she doesn't?
Paul: It doesn't matter. You know, she doesn't have to like you, Rose. I like you. And I like you very much.
Rose: Oh, man, you kiss good.
Paul: It was inspired.
Rose: Kissing like this could make a girl forget things, you know.
Paul: Like what?
Rose: Oh, like her good manners, all her good advice her mama gave her -
Paul: Let's start with that. Let's just forget all that motherly advice, okay?
Rose: Are you sure you can do that? I mean, a good son like you?
Paul: Watch it lady, you calling me a goody-goody?
Rose: No. No, I'm serious. You are a good son. It's one of the things about you that makes me weak in my knees, you know? You - came back here when your ma got hurt, and you put your life on hold -
Paul: Yeah, but you're the one on hold.
Rose: Because you're a good son. Any better, I'd recommend you for the priesthood.
Paul: Yeah, put an end to my kissing career? Forget it. I'm not letting you get away.
Paul: I'm not letting you get away from me.
Rose: Look - look, you shouldn't have to choose. She's your ma. She's your ma. She gave you life. She taught you how to butter your bread and do all the things that moms do. I would never, ever expect you to choose me over her.
Paul: Well, if I have to, I will, Rose I'm - that's how much you mean to me.
Rose: Look, this is not a fair fight. I mean, your ma, she has every right to lean on you right now.
Paul: Well, Rose, you've made me happier than I've been in so long. You're not gonna turn my back on that, not for anybody.
Paul: I'm gonna tell my mother that I won't tolerate any more interference from her.
Rose: Oh -
Paul: Okay? I'm gonna lay down the law.
Rose: Oh, please, I mean, I know Barbara. I've dealt with Barbara. You might as well say it to that wall.
Paul: Yeah, well, she'll get the message, okay? If she doesn't get it the first time, the second, third, whatever it takes.
Rose: You know, why are you stirrin' up the pot here? Why can't we just do what we want to do? And not worry about anybody else?
Paul: Well, it hasn't worked so far, has it?
Rose: Give it time. You know, soon maybe I'll look great in your ma's eyes. Lucinda, after that board meeting, she said up and down, up and down, gonna put me on the payroll.
Paul: Well, it's about time. If it weren't for you, she'd have lost her job and her company.
Rose: Haven't worked out all the details yet, but it's not the week for that. But I think she's gonna put her money where her mouth is. Me. Me! A powerhouse in corporate America. Can you believe it?
Paul: I'm so proud of you, Rose. More so than usual.
Rose: Thank you. But the reason I brought it up is because now I'll be able to afford a place of my own.
Paul: Mm.
Rose: So we won't have to worry anybody else.
Paul: I can't wait.
Rose: We'll make this about you and me, not Lucinda, not Barbara, not nobody.
Paul: Okay. That's what I want, too. All the way. I don't see why we can't start right now.
Rose: Hmm. Here? Um - my calendar's wide open. Sure, got a suggestion?
Paul: Yeah. Tonight, the Lakeview. Lakeview Towers.
Rose: Oh, tonight? No place I'd rather be.
Paul: Okay, great. We'll start off at the java for drinks, and then we'll drift over to -
Rose: On, no, no, no - you know what? Don't - don't jinx it, all right?
Paul: No? There's nothing but good times ahead for both of us, okay?
Barbara: Paul? Oh, Rose. I didn't know it was you.
Rose: Hi, Barbara. I just came by to see how you were doing.
Barbara: What made you think that was necessary?
Rose: Well, when I came over here yesterday, I was a little - a little overboard on my approach about Jennifer, and -
Barbara: Were you here yesterday? I don't remember.
Rose: I got it. I got it. I should -
Barbara: I didn't think it was necessary to say this, but you do not have an open invitation to drop in on a whim.
Paul: Yes, she does.
Rose: You know what? It's all right. You know? I should. That's - it's proper. I'll call ahead of time. I - I think it was great. I'm very happy for you. What you did at the hospital last night, that was great. I'm happy for you and for your family, that you're coming together like that.
Barbara: I'll note it in my diary.
Rose: I'll see you tonight?
Paul: Yeah. Of course.
Rose: Good luck. Good-bye.
Barbara: You two have another date?
Paul: Yes. We're going to the Java for drinks. And then, after that, who knows?
Barbara: Well, try not to be too late. When I don't know where you are, I can't sleep. I worry.
Paul: Let me put your mind at ease, mom. I'll be with Rose. At The Lakeview. All night.

Paul's Miracle - 10.29.01

Paul: Wow.
Rose: Paul.
Paul: If you keep looking like this, you're gonna make it hard for me to be a gentleman.
Rose: Oh. Well, I'm glad you like it.
Paul: I like it all, Rose.
Rose: Thank you. I keep looking around, expecting to see my friends. You know, Bryant, he'd get a real kick out of this.
Paul: Yeah, Bryant used to work here. You want to go somewhere else?
Rose: No, no, no. It's kind of nice being around one of his hangouts. I don't think Ms. Walsh is gonna get over it any time soon. I want to tell you, as a matter of fact, she gave me the job, Ms. Walsh. It's better than I thought.
Paul: That's great, Rose.
Rose: After all these months, you know? One minute I'm crying over Bryant. And the next minute, I'm pinchin' myself, wonderin' if I'm dreaming. I think that's why Lucinda came through finally, you know? Maybe after losing Bryant, she may have wanted to make every second count.
Paul: I'm all for that.
Rose: How do you do that? How do you make everything bad and sad just fade away?
Paul: Well, you do it to me. I'm just returning the favor.
Rose: (Paul retrieves a single rose) For me?
Paul: Yeah. And this is for you, too. (Paul walks over to Rose and kisses her.)
Paul: Let's get out of here. 'Cause looking at you is giving me -
Rose: Impure thoughts? Like Sister Loretta used to say?
Paul: Something like that.
Rose: I'm havin' a couple of doozies of my own. We should probably stay here, you know? Java Underground is much better than Lucinda's library or mom's living room.
Paul: I can't wait to have a place of my own.
Rose: Well, now that I've got the job, I need to find an apartment. I could be in as soon as this weekend.
Paul: We could be together before that.
Rose: Friday?
Paul: Tonight.
Rose: And I forgot my toothbrush. Which is like, you know, number six reason why we shouldn't do this tonight.
Paul: And they all stink. So why don't you tell me the real reason?
Rose: All right. Look at us. Look at the two of us, you and me. I mean, we're - we're so different, you know? We're like cats and dogs.
Paul: What are saying, Rose?
Rose: What I'm saying is - you know, sex changes things. And what if that's the only thing that these two people have in common? And what do we do after that?
Paul: You know what bug when you underestimate yourself. But what really bugs me is when you underestimate my feelings for you.
Rose: Feelings? You have feelings? For me? All right, let's say that you do have feelings for me. Can you elaborate on what those are?
Paul: Ever since I first saw you, you've been -
Rose: That "guardian angel" thing again, that?
Paul: Yeah. You sick of it yet?
Rose: No. But can a guardian angel be an erotic fantasy, too?
Paul: I hope so. But you're more than my and more than my fantasy.
Rose: Yea well, what am I?
Paul: Mine. Meant for me. Somebody up there decided to cut me some slack and give me a break from a lifetime of responsibility. I went to Nepal to climb mountains, trying to see a miracle. Now all I have to do is look at you.
Rose: You know what if I kiss you the way that I wanna kiss you right now, we're gonna spend the first night together we have in jail.
Paul: Are you - are you sure?
Rose: Check.
Paul: Okay -
Rose: You were saying?
Paul: No, I - I just - okay, um - leave.

(Paul and Rose enter the room tangled in each other's arms and lips, and the phone begins ringing.)
Rose: Expecting a phone call?
Paul: Hmm-mm. No.
(The two start undressing each other, and the phone continues ringing.)
Rose: Next time get a clip-on tie, would ya?
Paul: Oh, yeah.
(Phone ringing)
Rose (picks up the phone and yells): What?! Sorry. Hold on, yeah. Front desk.
Paul: Yeah? When? Oh. Uh - no. No, just - no, just leave I'll take care of it in the morning. No, no, just leave it. The car alarm will turn itself off, okay? All right? Oh, god. Uh - yeah. Okay. Fine! Fine, I'll be there. Be right down.
Rose: What's the ?!
Paul: It's the manager, I gotta - my alarm - somebody busted my windshield. I gotta take care of it. I'll be - I'll be right back, okay?
Rose: All right. I'll be waiting. Oh, boy! Oh, honey. If you like the dress, you're gonna love what's underneath. (Rose strips down to her slip.) What does every self-respecting Jersey girl have in her purse? No. Perfume.
(knock at door)
Rose: So soon? Surprise! Ahhh! My God.
Barbara: Right back at you, Rose.

Paul: Rose, I'm sorry. I had to sign six different documents for one busted windshield.
Rose: Oh, it's okay. You know, I'll call a cab, and you can call a garage, fix your car.
Paul: No, no, no. I don't see any cabs in your immediate future. I thought you'd have slipped into something a little more undressed.
Rose: Oh, you're a fashion guy. You know how to take off a dress. Oh, you know what? I can't do this, and I can't explain. I just have to go.
Paul: Do you - do you care about me?
Rose: That doesn't even scratch the surface.
Paul: Do you trust me? Then talk to me.
Rose: Okay, I'll tell you, but you can't ask any questions, okay?
Paul: Okay.
Rose: Okay. The first thing you've got to know is that it has nothing to do with you, because you - you're the best thing that ever happened to me. Sweet and kind, and when you look at me, you see me, who I really am, and you're so gorgeous, I could look at you all day long. So it's not about you, okay?
Paul: Rose, sit down. Come here.
Rose: All right. You see, the problem is that where I come from, my neighborhood, you know, we don't see people like you or meet people like you very much. It's unusual, very unusual, and people on the outside might look at us and think there's something wrong, you know, like I was bad for you or I might hurt you, and I would never hurt you. I would never do that, but people on the outside might think that, okay? So that's one thing. The other things. Uh, well, Worldwide and B.R.O., You're very busy, I'm very busy, and we don't really have time to start things up right now. It's - yeah, and stockholders, you know. It wouldn't be fair to them. Lucinda and Barbara, they're very tough, very tough, and they're going to expect a lot from us. We're going to have to ante up. Please know, please understand that I - that I want to do this. Please say that you understand.
Rose: Look, if you care about me, then you've got to help me do what I - do what I need to do.
Paul: Okay. Anything, just tell me?
Rose: You've got to leave before I blow this.
Paul: Okay. All right. What's going on here, Rose?
Rose: Nothing, nothing. It's just that we shouldn't be doing what we're doing here, that's all.
Paul: What? We both want this, right?
Rose: That's not the point.
Paul: Then what is the point? You know, earlier, we were headed towards something that we both wanted, and then, my car gets broken into, and you've changed. What happened?
Rose: Nothing happened. It's just not gonna work.
Paul: Look at me. You look at me, and you tell me that.
Rose: I don't want you. Please - please go.
Paul: This is crazy.
Rose: I know. My life is crazy.
Paul: All right. I'll go. This isn't over.
Rose: Oh, that Barbara Ryan - I used to feel sorry for her. Not anymore. -
