TAKE A TOUR

MEDIA VAN

We received our microwave media van from Winemiller Communications, Inc.

in September of 1997.  It is a used Wolf Coach that we use mostly for Electronic

Field Productions like football and basketball games or guest speakers, but we

have also used it for Electronic News Gathering and live shots during our news casts.

We also use the van to film and broadcast both summer and winter graduation

ceremonies. SUTV makes use of the media van in conjunction with Media Services

and the Comm/Journ Department.

CONTROL CENTER

[Van Pic] The control center of the van includes a Videonics PowerScript character generator, six black & white preview monitors, a Clear-Com party-line 2-channel intercom system, a Sony DVCAM A-Roll linear editing system, a Mackie sound mixer with 6 mono and 4 stereo inputs, and a ten input Grass Valley video switcher.
The van has the ability to draw power from a gas powered generator or it can accept power from one or two outlets.  It is also equipped with external lights for nightime shooting. [Van Pic]

MEDIA VAN CAMERA'S

We normally run a three camera setup using three Sony mini-DV cameras mounted on top of black & white monitors with a zoom control handle and intercom headset to hear directorial cues.  If we do use a fourth camera we use one of our professional DV or S-VHS cameras.

THE VAN

The van is equipped with a microwave transmitter attached to a mast that can be raised to a height of 37 feet with the help of an air compressor in the rear of the van.  The transmitter allows us to broadcast live signals from the van to a microwave receiver on top of Grove Hall where our studio is located.  The transmitter's range is limited to the Shippensburg campus and borough.

On the passenger side of the truck is a patch-bay where all of the audio, video, and intercom signals from cameras and on-air talent are received and sent to the video switcher, sound mixer, or intercom system.  The patch-bay also provides power to the cameras and any other electronic devices we use that are not inside the van.

STUDIO

Our studio is located in room 004 of Grove Hall and is used jointly by SUTV,

Media Services, and the Comm/Journ Department.  In the spring of 2001 NBC 25

in Hagerstown, MD built a new news set and donated their old set to the university.

NEWS DESK

[Studio Pic] The news desk has two monitors for each anchor to look at.  The desk is seated on top of risers and is portable if we need to use the set for other purposes such as interviews.

CAMERAS

There are three cameras in the studio, two of which are new Hitachi digital cameras.  All cameras are connected to a teleprompter and are equipped with zoom and focus controls on the handles.  An intercom system is used so camera operators can hear directorial cues. [Studio Pic]
CONTROL ROOM
[Studio Pic] The studio's control room is equipped with a 10 input switcher, a computer based character generator, a 24 input Mackie sound mixer, three S-VHS source decks and an S-VHS recorder. The studio is being updated for the 21st Century and will be run fully by digital technology.
BLUE SCREEN
We also have a blue screen used for chroma keying effects, such as displaying a weather map or other graphics behind a reporter. [Studio Pic]
EDITING SUITES
[Studio Pic] Above the Studio are three editing suites.  Two of these suites are dedicated to non-linear editors.  The first is a Pinnacle running Windows 2000 and the second is an I-Mix running MacOS.  The third suite has two A/B roll linear VHS editors.  One of these editors also has a DVCPro source deck.
