Part One
“Don’t do it, Cal,” a girl’s voice commanded.
Max and Cal whirled around to see a pissed off girl of about sixteen. She had fire red hair, emerald eyes, stood about 5’4, and wore black leather pants and a green halter-top.
“Don’t do it,” she repeated. “My command overrides his and I command you not to do it.”
A look of relief washed over Cal’s face.
“Thank God. I love you, ya know that?”
Max narrowed his eyes.
“Who are you and what the hell do you think you’re doing?” he demanded.
The young girl crossed her arms and glared at him.
“I was just about to ask the same question, only I know who you are.”
“Oh yeah? Then who am I?” he asked snidely.
“Max Evans, a.k.a. Zan, retarded king of Antar,” she retorted with an icy glare.
Cal snorted.
“You got him pegged, alright. Max, meet Serena, your wife,” he said with a smirk.
Max’s jaw dropped as he stared at the girl before him.
“What? Blonde bimbo bitch got your tongue?” Serena asked with a wicked grin.
That snapped Max out of it.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he demanded. “And how the hell are you my wife? I thought that was Tess.”
Serena rolled her eyes.
“In her dreams. Little hooker always did want in your pants…but that’s beside the point. I’m your wife, or at least I was in our last life. I still don’t know how the hell that bitch got put into those pods, but I’ll ask her before I kill her. Anyways, as Queen, my command overrides yours so you can just kiss going to Antar in my ship goodbye.”
“I’m King. Therefore, my command would override yours,” Max protested.
“Well, it normally would, but you aren’t King by birthright. I, however, am Queen by birthright and that makes me to superior to you. If my brother had been born before me, Michael would be King and you would be his second in command, if anything at all. How do you like them apples?”
Max remained silent, looking shell-shocked. Finally, he said, “But my son? Why would Khivar want my and Tess’ child if he wouldn’t be the heir?”
Serena and Cal exchanged a quick glance.
“You have to tell him, Serena.”
“Tell me what?” Max asked fearfully.
Serena sighed and looked him straight in the eye, which somewhat unnerved him.
“You have a son, but Tess is not the mother—I am.”
Part Two
Max’s jaw hit the ground while Serena and Cal watched in twisted amusement. A thousand emotions danced across the boy’s face: shock, relief, fear, anger, confusion, love.
“Zane?”
Serena smiled.
“Our son. Anyway, they
knocked me out and took off in the Granilith with Zane.”
Serena paused for a second and looked at Max with sadness.
“We have to get our son back, Max.
He’s so scared.”
“I know, I can feel it too.”
Before he could say any more, his phone rang.
Serena ripped it out of his hands and turned it off.
“What the hell? That was my girlfriend!” Max shrieked.
Cal gave Serena a questioning look and she frowned further.
“I know. Look, we have
some things to discuss and I want to do it without involving anyone else.
So, you don’t talk to Liz or your other friends, and I don’t talk to
my fiancé.”
“Who?” Cal demanded, unaware that his charge was engaged.
“Zan,” Serena replied with her version of a smile.
“I thought he was dead,” Max said with a confused look on his face.
“He was. Now, come on.
Let’s get out of here.”
Cal and Max looked at each other and followed their leader out of the
hanger.
The next morning…
“Damn!” Michael sighed and slammed the phone down.
“That’s the twentieth time he hasn’t answered the damn phone.”
Maria looked at her worried best friend and turned to her boyfriend.
“Maybe he just forgot about it,” she said, jerking her head toward
Liz.
Michael nodded in understanding. “Yeah,
that may be it. Look, why don’t
we all just go and track him down?” Michael suggested.
“Let’s go. I have a bad
feeling about this,” Liz replied quickly and grabbed her coat.
“What about Isabel?” Maria asked on the way to her Jetta.
“She won’t want to come,” Michael dismissed.
“Who said anything about what she wants having to do with it? It’s
her brother and if she wants us to go to her wedding, she had better help us.”
“Fine, but you and Liz are the ones going in.
Good luck,” Michael mumbled and headed toward the Evans’ residence.
“I still don’t get what you’re suggesting,” Max sighed, putting
his hand to his forehead.
Serena rolled her eyes and took another sip of her Frappuccino.
“Let me put this in easy terms. We
have two choices. Choice uno is to
fake our deaths so everyone, including Khivar, won’t exactly be expecting us
to save Zane.”
Max immediately shook his head. “No
way. My group couldn’t handle any
more deaths. Alex’s was one too
many.”
Serena nodded in consent. “Our
other choice is a little more complicated.
Everyone on Antar, especially Khivar, remembers how much the original Zan
and Serena loved each other. People
wrote stories and songs about it. We
were worse than you and Liz are, though it’s hard to believe.
I know for a fact that Nicholas and Tess were convinced that if you and I
ever met up, you would choose me over Liz.
Don’t freak, I know you wouldn’t do that. My point is—everyone on Antar and probably Michael and
Isabel, if they remembered anything about me, would agree with Tess and
Nicholas. We can use that.”
“How?” an intrigued Cal asked.
“If we pretend to be together and that our significant others and close
friends and family mean nothing to us, Khivar won’t use them against us.
I know him very well and he wouldn’t use Liz as leverage if he thought
that you loved me.”
“Are you absolutely positive?” Max asked with a spark of hope in his
eyes.
“Yeah. I think it could
work.”
Max looked at his two new friends and smiled.
“Let’s do it.”
“Good, but first—you two are going to go out tonight, have some fun,
and get to know each other. That’s
an order.”
Serena smiled and kissed Cal on the cheek.
“Sure thing. Go get
changed, Maxwell. I’m going to
show you around town, then show you what living is all about tonight.”
“I can’t believe you blackmailed me into going with you. You do realize that in two weeks you can’t do this all the
time, right?” Isabel whined from the backseat.
“And Jesus, Michael, slow down.”
“I’m not gonna slow down, Isabel.
I want to get to LA as soon as possible.”
“It’s like 800 miles if not more, and at the speed you’re driving,
we’ll be there by diner time.”
“That’s the idea!”
“God, this is going to be a long drive,” Maria moaned.
Part Three
“So, how are you planning on
getting us to Antar?” Max questioned.
“Max, I am enjoying the beautiful view of Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise and we are eating at an incredibly exclusive restaurant that I had to pull a lot of strings to get into, but all you can do is ask me questions irrelevant to our diner and the club we’re going to next!” Serena hissed.
“Sorry, just that one question. Please?”
Max pleaded with a puppy dog face.
“Fine, but you’re not going to like it.
Khivar is coming to Earth to cause havoc at Isabel’s wedding. When he gets here, Cal will take care of him while we get
into the Granilith and go to Antar. Don’t
question it; we still have time to work out the many, many kinks.
Okay?”
“Okay.
Where are we going next?”
Serena’s eyes lit up as she said, “Only the hottest club in the
city.”
Max grinned and went back to his meal.
“God, I hope he can dance,” she muttered to herself.
“This has to be a record,” Isabel mumbled as they pulled up to
Cal’s mansion.
“You sure this is the place?” Liz asked.
“Yeah, this is the place I saw when I dream walked Max.”
“Can I help you?” a voice from the intercom asked.
“Uh, yeah. We’re looking
for a Cal Langley,” Michael replied.
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No, but we just wanted to ask him a few questions about our friend,
Max Evans.”
“Proceed,” the voice said with some suspicion.
“That was a little too easy,” Maria stated.
The group pulled up to the front where they we met by a “butler”.
“Follow me,” he said.
He led them into Cal’s living room and said, “Wait here, I’ll go
get Mr. Langley.”
Before the group could even get a good look around, Cal hurriedly walked
into the room.
“What can I do for you?” he asked.
“We’re looking for my boyfriend, Max Evans.
His last known location is here. Do
you know where he is now, Mr. Langley?”
“No. Um, would you excuse
me for a minute?”
The teens nodded and he ran into the kitchen.
As quiet as possible, Michael followed.
“Max! Put Serena on the phone—Serena, its Cal.
Maria, Michael, Isabel and Liz are here—They want to use the bathroom.
Why do you think they’re here? They’re looking for Max—Are you
sure?—What does Max think?—Okay! Sorry.
Its not going to be pretty—Fine, I’ll tell them.
Good luck, your Majesty.”
Cal put the phone down and took a deep breath.
He turned around and found himself face-to-face with Michael.
“Where is Max?” Michael growled.
“So Cal’s going to tell them which club we’re at?” Max asked.
“Yep, and Zan’s supposed to meet me here as well.
Let the fire works begin!” Serena said with a smirk and led Max into
the club. “Let’s have some fun
before they get here.”

“Think its possible?” Max questioned.
Serena pulled back to look him in the eye. “We’ll make it possible.”
Max nodded and hugged his wife. “I
don’t know how I’ve made it for so long without you.”
“Max, you don’t need me—you need Liz.
I’m just reminding you of her right now.”
“But I do need you, just like you need me.”
Serena grinned mischievously. “Fine,
I admit it—I need you too. I’m
just trying to make sure you don’t make a pass at me.”
“Excuse me? Are you questioning me loyalty to Liz?” Max asked
indignantly.
“Me? Never!”
“Serena, shut up and dance.”
“Yes, your Majesty.”
Lucky you were born that far away
so
So we
could both make fun of distance
Lucky that I
love a foreign land for
The lucky
fact of your existence
Baby I would
climb the Andes solely
To count the
freckles on your body
Never could
imagine there were only
Too many ways
to love somebody
Lo ro lo le
lo le
Lo ro lo le
lo le
Can't you
see...I'm at your feet
Whenever,
wherever
We'll learn
to be together
I'll be there
and you'll be near
And that's
the deal my dear
They're over,
you're under
You'll never
have to wonder
We can always
play by ear
But that's
the deal my dear
The other three shrugged.
“Where the hell is she?” Zan mumbled to himself. “I swear, she tells me to meet her in some random club in freakin’ California and I can’t find her!”
Lucky
that my lips not only mumble
They spill kisses like a fountain
Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains
Lucky I have strong legs like my mother
To run for cover when I need it
And these two eyes are for no other
The day you leave we'll cry a river
Lo ro lo le lo le
Lo ro lo le lo le
At your feet...I'm at your feet
Whenever, Wherever
We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear
They're over, you're under
You'll never have to wonder
We can always play by ear
But that's the deal my dear
Max shrugged. “I have no
clue!” he yelled back.
Tell me one more time
That you'll
live
Lost in my
eyes
Whenever,
wherever
We'll learn
to be together
I'll be there
and you'll be near
And that's
the deal my dear
They're over,
you're under
You've got me
head over heels
There's
nothing left to fear
If you really
feel the way I feel
Whenever,
wherever
We're meant
to be together
I'll be there
and you'll be near
And that's
the deal my dear
They're over,
you're under
You've got me
head over heels
There's
nothing left to fear
If
you really feel the way I feel
“There he is!” Michael yelled.
Maria, Liz and Isabel looked over in the direction he was pointing in,
only to spot Max and Serena dancing a little too close for Liz’s comfort.
“Who the hell is she?” Liz shrieked.
Michael shrugged. “Must be
the Serena chick Langley mentioned.”
“You didn’t tell me her name was Serena.”
Isabel looked at her quizzically. “Why
would that matter?”
“No reason.”
“Max Evans! You better have a damn good explanation for us!” Maria
hollered as she walked up to the two young rulers.
“Let the games begin,” Serena muttered as she saw Zan spot her.
She and Max pulled apart, but Max kept his arm around her trim waist.
“Maria! What are you guys doing here?” Max asked casually.
“Gee, Max, when my boyfriend, who’s on an important mission,
doesn’t answer his phone for two days, we all tend to get a little worried.
Now what the hell are you doing here with her?” Liz
exploded.
Serena gripped Max’s arm tightly.
“Keep calm, do not blow this,” she hissed.
He gave her a curt nod and looked at his family.
“Let’s talk about this outside.”
Zan continued to follow them wordlessly, just as Serena knew he would.
“This doesn’t look good. Look
how they’re holding onto each other,” Isabel whispered to Maria.
“You’re not the only one who’s noticed.
Liz looks ready to kill the little red headed home wrecker.”
Once outside, Liz put her hands on her hips and looked Max straight in
the eye. Zan stood in the shadows
nearby, not wanting the others to see him.
“What is going on?” Liz
demanded.
Max sighed. “Liz, I
don’t know how to tell you this, but…”
“But what?” she growled.
“I’m in love with Serena,” he blurted out.
“What?” Michael asked doubtfully.
“You just met the girl. How
can you be in love with her?”
“She’s my real mate, not Tess. As
soon as I saw her, it was as if I’d known her for years.
I remember her and our love. I
love her with all my heart,” Max said, looking at Serena lovingly.
Serena’s eyes widened as she watched Zan’s face go from suspicion to
fury, but she remained silent.
“Your real mate?” Isabel repeated.
“Yes. You must
believe—“
“I do. I believe you, Max.
Serena, what was the one secret on Antar that I told you never to reveal
to anyone?” Isabel asked.
Serena gave a surprised smile. “Are
you sure you want me to repeat it in front of your brother? It would be rather
embarrassing for you.”
“15?”
“In his bed?”
“Yes!” Isabel exclaimed and wrapped the other girl in a fierce hug.
“I always knew something was wrong with Tess.”
While this exchange was happening, Michael, Maria and Liz stood by,
growing angrier each moment.
“How dare you?” Liz finally seethed.
Serena, Isabel, and Max turned around at the dangerous sound.
“I trusted you. I gave up
my life and my happiness for you. I
loved you! That doesn’t matter now that you’ve found your soul mate, I
guess. Well guess what, Max—I hate you.
And if you ever talk to me again, I will do everything in my power to
destroy you.”
With that, Liz stalked off to the Jetta.
Michael and Maria followed after shooting Serena and Max looks that could
kill.
“I better go with them. We’ll
talk later,” Isabel said and rushed after her friends.
“I can’t believe I ever loved you,” Zan said with hurt in his voice
as he stepped away from the building.
“Zan…”
“Don’t Serena, just don’t,” he said and ran off.
As soon as they were alone, Max collapsed to the ground crying
hysterically. Serena wordlessly sat
down beside Max and rocked him as he cried.
“She hates me,” he cried into her shoulder.
“And because of that she’ll stay alive,” Serena said gently.
She helped Max to the car and drove back to Langley’s.
“What happened?” Cal asked as she walked by, leading Max to his room.
Serena silenced him with a look and Cal automatically helped her with
Max. They laid him in bed and
turned off the lights while he continued to cry.
The two walked out and closed the door.
“Is he going to be okay?” Cal asked.
Serena could only shrug. Cal
nodded and went downstairs to finish his snack.
When she was sure he was out of hearing distance, Serena slid down the
wall and began to sob.
“What have I done?” she whispered.
Part Four
Max woke the next morning a changed man. It had been dawn before he’d finally worn himself out with his tears and fallen asleep. He now felt harder, almost, and much more determined to save his son and put his life back in order. He climbed out of bed and opened the door; surprised to find Serena curled up on the floor, sound asleep. Max gently lifted his wife and put her in bed. He studied her vulnerable expression for a moment, then sighed and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead before heading downstairs. Cal looked up from the paper when he heard the young king enter the kitchen.
“’Morning, Max. How are
you feeling?” he asked cautiously.
“Just dandy, Langley. I
mean, I’ve only lost everything I hold dear and love.
One of which happens to be the love of my life.”
“You still have Serena and Isabel.”
“Isabel. I can’t even go
to her damn wedding! Besides, I have to stay away from her as well.
God, this bites.”
Cal smiled sadly and placed a sympathetic hand on the boy’s shoulder.
“Keep the faith, Max. That’s
all you can do.”
Max nodded and turned back to the coffee.
As he was pouring some into his cup, Serena half screamed/half wailed,
“Zan!”
Max dropped everything and tore up the stairs; fiercely protective of the
only person he had left. He burst
through the door and found Serena sitting up in bed sobbing.
“Serena? What’s wrong?” he asked softly and sat down on the edge of
the bed.
She looked up at him with wild, red-rimmed eyes.
“Don’t ever leave me, Max. Promise
me you won’t ever leave me,” she choked out through her tears.
“I-I promise.”
“How do I know you’ll keep that promise?”
Max was dumbfounded. “Sweetie,
where is this coming from?”
“Because you almost did it to Liz, the freakin’ love of your life!
You almost left with Cal to go to another planet and you didn’t bother to call
your friends to say goodbye. Christ,
you didn’t even call them to let them know that you were okay and not lying in
a ditch dead. Those people are your
family and you almost left them without a second thought.
So tell me Max, how do I know you won’t leave me? Do you realize that
if you left and we never got Zane back, I’d have nothing left? I’d have no
reason to live?” she asked, looking away from him.
Max closed his eyes and cursed himself for the millionth time for letting
Liz walk away from him after the goddamn message from his mother a year and a
half ago. That’s really when
everything started to go downhill. They
spent the summer apart, Liz pretended to sleep with Kyle, Tess comforted him,
etc. Now that he thought about it,
Liz never did tell him why she did that with Kyle.
Oh well, that was irrelevant now. It
didn’t change the fact that Max had become someone he couldn’t even
recognize anymore. He sighed
wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her head.
“Don’t forget about Zan. Don’t
you think he’ll take you back?”
“I honestly don’t know,” she sobbed into his chest.
Max just rocked her as she had done the night before for him. The small girl in his arms was incredibly strong and he knew
that she had to be as devastated, if not more, than he was for her to break down
like this.
“We’ll get Zane back and then we’ll fix everything, I promise.”
“Don’t promise the impossible, Max,” Serena mumbled bitterly.
Max pulled back and stared into her bright green eyes.
“Its not impossible. We
will get them back,” he said firmly.
The Queen smiled weakly. “I
may not believe you, but I believe in you.
So, what do we do now?”
“You’re the one in charge here, not me.”
“Right. Well, I suppose we
better head out for Roswell.”
Max nodded. “But where are
we going to stay? We can’t exactly stay with Michael or my parents.”
Serena grew silent for a moment, and then yelled, “Cal!”
Their protector appeared almost immediately.
“You rang?” he asked dryly.
“Cal, sweetie, baby, do you think we could borrow a little denero for
our trip to Roswell?” Serena asked sweetly.
“Why am I not surprised? Sure, fine, whatever.
When do you need it?”
“Today, preferably. We
need to get there as soon as possible,” Max said.
“That’s cool. When do
you want me to come out there?”
“As soon as you can. We
can’t take the chance that Khivar will come early and it will take us longer
to track the Granilith. We need to
be within range of the tracker when he lands.
Of course, that could make us easier to find, but he already knows where
everyone else is, but—“
“Serena! You’re babbling. I
swear, you’re a freaky combination of your brother and his girlfriend.”
Serena glared at her husband. “I
know it’s not a compliment, but I’ll take it as one, for your sake.”
Cal chuckled. “I can
probably make it out there in two days. Don’t
worry; I’ll get a separate room at a different hotel.
Wouldn’t want to get in the way of your bickering.”
Serena smirked. “You’re
so funny! Hahaha, see me laugh. Okay,
Maxwell, grab your stuff and pile it in the car.
Then we’ll go get Cal’s money from the bank and be on our way.
Do you think you’re going to be able to pull off another performance
like last night with your parents and Isabel?”
“Have my Oscar waiting outside, please.”
Serena arched an eyebrow. “A
little cocky are we?”
Max shook his head. “No,
I’m just desperate now. The
sooner we get this over with, the sooner we can make amends.”
“I know what you mean. Oh
yeah, we’re also going to have to talk to Jeff Parker.”
Max’s head shot up. “Liz’s
father? Why?”
Serena and Cal exchanged a quick glance.
Max gulped. “Uh-oh, its
never good when you two do that.”
“Um, Jeff isn’t exactly…”
“Human,” Cal finished for her.
“Liz! Where have you been?” Jeff demanded when his daughter crawled
though her window.
Liz’s eyes widened at the sight of her father sitting in her room.
“Um, I was, uh, out with, um, Michael, Isabel and Maria,” she
stammered.
“You’re grounded, again,” he said with disappointment and walked
out of her room.
Liz sighed and flopped onto her bed.
The phone rang and she picked it up the same instant her father did.
“Jeff?” a man’s voice came.
Liz almost hung up, but stopped when her father said, “Langley? Is that
you?”
“Yeah. How you doing?”
“Okay, I guess. Liz just
snuck in and I have no idea where she’s been.”
“I do. She, Michael,
Isabel, and Maria were out here looking for Max.”
“Shit. Did they find
him?”
“Yeah, and Serena. That’s
actually what I’m calling about. Serena
and Max are going to be heading back to Roswell today and I can’t make it out
there for two more days. Could you
keep an eye on them for me?
“Sure thing. Why are they
heading back so soon?”
“Well—“ Cal was cut off by the sound of Max and Serena’s arguing.
“You did what?!” Max shrieked, following her into the kitchen.
“I had to do something! I know that Khivar has people watching you and
if one them reported how cozy you two were, he’d never believe that you and I
were together!”
“I don’t care! You and Jeff had no right…” Max’s voice faded as
the two left the room.
“What the hell was that about?” Jeff questioned.
Cal rolled his eyes. “Her
Majesty just told Max who you are.”
Jeff chuckled. “No wonder
the poor boy’s pissed. Those two
are bound to be worse than Michael and Maria.”
“Well, there have been some fireworks, but no big explosions yet.
Their drive to Roswell should be full of them, though. Well,
I better go and keep them from killing each other.
See you in a few days and keep those two alive!”
“Sure thing. Bye,
Langley.”
Liz hung up the phone and sat there utterly confused.
“What the hell?” she muttered.
“Max, calm down. It was
for your own good.”
“I won’t calm down Serena! You and Liz’s father plotted to separate
us.”
“Take a chill pill, drama king. We
knew that you’d sneak around to see each other.
By having Jeff threaten the whole boarding school thing, you two
wouldn’t be seen together too much.”
Max rolled his eyes in disgust. “You
have very twisted logic. And I
can’t believe that Jeff is an alien. That’s
too weird.”
“What’s weird about it? You live in Roswell—half of the people
there are actually aliens, they just do a really good job at hiding it.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah. None of them know
about you guys, though. I’m
pretty sure that Jeff and Amy are the only two.”
“Maria’s mother?”
“Yep. She’s Antarian
too, I think. Jeff is from Corninth,
Larek’s planet.”
Max shook his head and sat down. “This
is so weird…wait. That means that
Liz is half alien.”
Serena nodded. “I thought
you knew that already. She’s
supposed to be pretty powerful, especially after you healed her.”
“Does she know?”
Serena looked at Max, surprised by the question.
“Of course not. She’d
tell you if she did. You do know
that, right Max?”
Max shrugged. “I don’t
know anything anymore.”
“We’ll fix it, Max. I
promise,” his wife whispered softly.
He smiled and put his arm around her.
“Let’s get this show on the road.
Roswell, here we come.”
