Lacey February 19, 1996 - December 15, 2006
This is Lacey, a rescued Great Dane that came through our Great Dane Angel Network here in North Texas. She was 6 years old & very overweight. Registered with AKC as Hey Ho Alegna, her first 3 years were spent in a 'breeding' kennel in Denton but she would not produce any pups. She had been kept chained in the kitchen of her 2nd owner for the last 3 years before coming into rescue. The owner's boyfriend apparently had a problem with attention and said either the dog went or he would. We all know she made a terrible mistake and will pay highly for it later in life. But Lacey benefited from that decision because they found our rescue group and turned her over to us. THANK GOODNESS! She is so sweet and gentle and kind. I decided to foster her because I already had an elder dane of 7 and felt she would tolerate this one for a while like she has all the other fosters we have had. She walked into this house, met Miesha and Ruston, the CCI pup and Disi the cat, then proceeded to go lay down! It took a while for her to learn where the dog door was, but she never had a mistake in the house. She always came and asked to go out. She avoided my husband - presumeably due to previous bad experiences with the 'boyfriend'. After staying for 2 weeks, one night she got up from my feet while I was watching TV (she does like to cuddle) and walked over to Henry who was working on the computer. She put her head under his arm to gain attention! He turned to her and asked "What?" She put a paw in his lap! He asked her "Are you saying you want to stay here?" She slapped that paw in his lap again! He told her "You have to ask Mommy if you can stay". She got up and came over to me and slapped her paw in my lap! I asked Henry if it was OK for her to stay and he just said that she certainly isn't any trouble so sure, she could stay. I asked Lacey if she wanted to stay and she slapped the paw again in my lap. So I told her "Shake on it" and held out my hand. She put her paw in my hand and sealed the deal! I called our Rescue leader, Midge, the next morning and told her to remove Lacey from the Adoption list. She's ours!!!!
Where's that squirrel?
Lacey had a severe reaction 2 weeks after her rabies shot that was given in July 2005. Her right rear hip was hugely swollen. She couldn't walk and had an extreme fever of 106. I had to carry her to the van to get her to the vet. She was put on ketofen, baytril & rimadyl, then torbugesic & clavamox for 7 days. She relapsed 4 days later and again was given rimadyl and clavamox. One year later she suddenly appeared with a swollen toe on the same leg. X-rays showed bone cancer. She began having repeated urinary infections. Not sure if the cancer had moved to the bladder, but that was surmised by the vet as being the cause of the restricted urine flow. It was evedient it had moved to her lungs as she could no longer handle laying in the sun as she used to do. She would get too hot and begin panting. Same for a brief walk. We were able to control the pain for 4 months. Finally the time came that she could no longer could not get up or walk without a lot of struggle and she whimpered sometimes. So I had to make that decision to relieve her of her pain forever. We had friends come visit with her, give her treats and lots of pets, spoke of memories and shared photos. Our vet made the trip out here and helped let her go. This second photo was taken 2 days before she died. We will be planting a tree in her name soon.
Enjoying a sunbath - final days
