Stryper was definitely my favorite show of the festival. This was despite the fact that, as soon as it started, people rushed towards the area around the stage where I had been standing for the last six hours, drowning me in a sea of sweaty, stinky bodies and fogging up my glasses and my camera lens. I felt like I was watching history come alive, and those bodies didn't just bring sweat--they brought contagious energy. These were passionate fans. Some of them had been camped out at the stage all day in the horrible heat just so they could get a good seat. (I was one of them!)
The day of the concert was horribly hot and humid. (I thought I was going to die.) Someone from the crowd asked Michael Sweet, "What happened to your makeup?" He said, "What happened to your makeup! I haven't worn makeup since '91--besides, no one wears makeup in this kind of weather!"
Stryper fans from all over the country had arrived just to see this concert, Stryper's first full-length set in 10 years. Many of these fans sported T-shirts bought at the original shows. Michael Sweet said that he would walk up to a fan like that, tap him on the shoulder, and say, "Nice shirt." Typically the fan would answer, "Thanks man," and return to whatever he was doing. He wouldn't even recognize a man he'd come all that way to see!
