  • Ilha Formosa - Beautiful Island
Taiwan is a beautiful island home to over twenty two million Chinese of various ethnic and provincial backgrounds. Taiwan was a protectorate of the Chinese Empire in 1206 and became a separate province of China in 1885.The Dutch invaded Taiwan in 1624 and remained as colonists for 37 years. The Spanish invaded Taiwan in 1626, but where driven out by Dutch in 1642. Taiwan was restored to Mainland China in the Ming dynasty (1661)after the victory war by General Cheng Cheng-Kung. The Japanese occupied Taiwan from 1895 until the end of World War II in 1945.
    Ilha Formosa - Beautiful Island,
was the name the Portuguese gave to this island. Taiwan, as it is now called, comes from the Chinese word meaning terraced bay. It is situated in the Pacific Ocean about 160 km or 100 miles from the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland. Located midway between Korea and Japan to the north and Hong Kong and the Philippines to the south, Taiwan is a natural gateway for travelers to and from Asia.
CAN YOU FIND TAIWAN? Can You Find Taiwan?
Taiwan is a natural gateway for travelers to and from Asia. Taiwan is 394 km or 245 miles long and 144 km or 89.5 miles wide at its broadest point and is about the same size as Holland or Tasmania.

The central mountain range bi-sects Taiwan from north to south and about two-thirds if the island's 14000 square miles is covered with forested peaks. The rest of the island is made up of foothills, terraced flat lands and coastal plains and basins. On the East Coast, Taiwan's mountains rise straight out of the sea and on the west lies a flat, fertile plain where 90% of the population reside.

Taiwan also includes a number of smaller islands. These are the Penghu, Lanyu, Lutao, Hsiao Luichiu, Kinmen and Matsu islands. The latter two are very close to Mainland China and serve as military bases, although both are now open to tourism.
The Flag of The Republic of China.
The Republic of China (ROC) was established in 1912. Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father, created a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" to replace the Ching dynasty. The nationalist government moved to Taiwan in 1949 and took effective jurisdiction over Taiwan, and the offshore islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu.
    THE FLAG
    The Flag Of The R.O.C.
It is in these areas the ROC has successfully demonstrated democracy and the free economy. It is beleived the Communists illegally took control of China in 1949, and there are hopes for reunification with mainland China, but not under Communism.
Chiang Kia-Shek Memorial Hall. THE CLIMATE
The climate in Taiwan is subtropical in the north and tropical in the south with average annual temperatures of 22o C (72oF) and 24o C (75oF) respectively. Warm currents give Taiwan a climate that makes vegetation abundant and permits two to three rice harvests a year.

Summers, which last on average from May through September, are usually hot and humid with average daytime highs from about 27o C to 35o C (81o F to 95o F)with humidity rising to 80%.

Winters, normally from December through February, are short and mild with average lows from 12 - 16o C (54 - 61o F). Snow falls only on the higher mountains. The typhoon season is from July to October.
Taipei's climate can generally be divided into "hot and wet" and "cold and wet". The summer is very hot and humid, with the occasional torrential downpours. Thus cotton clothing is best, with jeans being less practical. The weather in central and southern Taiwan tends to be considerably less wet and does not get as cool as the north in the winter months.

Although winter temperatures can occasionally dip as low as 10o C or low 40o's F, these temperatures can be misleading. Since it's very wet, and insulation and central heating are virtually non-existent; even those from traditionally colder regions feel cold.
