Two weeks had passed since Nick and his family returned from Los Angeles. Aaron and Angel had settled into their new home. It was now time to tell their side of the story and for BSB to make it's announcements.
"James your office is taking care of the TV interview and I will be handling the People article right," asked Denise McLean
"Yes. So we all agree on this," asked James Michaelson, who was now acting as the primary manager for the Backstreet Boys.
"I believe we do," answered Kevin. "You all OK?"
"Yeah," said Lesley answering for her and the twins.
"I say it's Mickey D's time."
"Can we go with AJ," Aaron asked.
"Yes, but Alex you drive safely," ordered his mother.
"Don't I always? Don't look at me that way!"
They adjourned and everyone went their separate ways. Brian invited Nick over to shoot some hoops. He called ahead and Leighanne had lunch ready.
"Honey you didn't have to fix lunch."
"You don't like it," asked Leighanne as she began to tear up.
"No it's wonderful. Thank you for being so thoughtful," said Brian, kissing his wife. He was learning her pregnancy driven mood swings.
"Yeah thanks Leigh. I'm starving."
"Good! Sit down and eat. How did the meeting go?"
"Really good," replied Brian. "We are going to do a joint MTV/VH1 interview and the kids are talking to People magazine. Denise and James are working out the timing."
"So what all are you going to announce?"
Nick answered, "Well the first thing is about you becoming a mommy. We're asking for prayers since B is gong to be the daddy. We figure you will need all the prayers you and the baby can get."
"Hello I'm listening!"
"Hush Brian," chuckled Leighanne.
"There is also the matter of AJ's engagement and Howie can gush about Maddy," laughed Brian.
"Are you going to talk about Kassidy?"
"Yes. I'm not hiding her anymore."
"Finally, we will tell them about the plans for the newest album and tour."
"Why didn't you just say you were going to talk about everything," teased Leighanne.
"Because it would have been too simple, Leigh," replied Nick. "This is really good. B you ready?"
"Yeah."
"You guys just inhaled your food."
"It was so good honey."
"Fine, go play with your ball."
Brian and Nick headed outside laughing. They played hard for a couple of hours. Nick stopped by Denise's before heading to Tampa. She told him the interviews were in three days.
Once home he let the dogs out to play. He looked around; Lilly had stopped by and cleaned the place up. He was glad she had, because he was going to get Kassidy immediately after the interviews were done. He and Denise were taking his siblings to their interview with People; then he would hook up with the rest of BSB for their interview the same afternoon.
Nick wander through his house. He stood in his bedroom for a moment looking around. Suddenly, he bounded into his office and came back with his drawing materials. He spent the time until he went to Nashville on his project. He just hoped Kassidy liked it.
Two days later, he was driving from the interview with People to the place where they were meeting with MTV and VH1. The two networks agreed Brian McFayden would conduct the interview. He had replaced John Norris as the main interviewer when John moved into the spot vacated by Kurt Loder. Kurt had taken over as Director of the MTV News Department.
Nick arrived and was hurried into the makeup chair. The other guys were ready. They had all agreed for the initial interview only the five Boys would be present, no family. VH1 had asked them about allowing follow up interviews at their homes. The two networks would again share the footage.
BSB took their seats. Brian McFayden greeted them warmly. He was in the dark about what news they were sharing today. He only knew the guys were making announcements both professional and personal. They had purposely not allowed any details out. He asked if they wanted to do personal or professional first. They decided on personal first and the interview began.
Brian talked about Leighanne and the pregnancy. Kevin talked about being a first time dad as well. Howie gushed about Maddy. AJ announced his engagement. Nick fielded questions about what was going with his family. He explained anything dealing with his siblings was talked about with in an interview with People Magazine. He did admit he was seeing Kassidy. The guys were all quick to say the tabloid stories were inaccurate. They also discussed plans for the next album and new tour.
Once they got the all clear, Brian McFayden congratulated all of them and thanked them for doing the interview. AJ took Nick to the airport after dropping his car off at AJ's house. Kassidy got lucky when finding a buyer for her house. Jessica, the girl who house sat for her was engaged. She had always loved the house and so did her fiancé, Dan. The realtor had also been working with them. She had casually asked if they would be interested in Kassidy's house if it went on the
market. They had jumped on it. They made an offer and Kassidy accepted. Jessica's fiancé, Dan, picked up Nick at the airport. The couple didn't want their reunion splashed all over the media. He couldn't believe the group of photographers standing across from Kassidy's house. The media guys looked up when Dan came into view, but lost interest when they recognized the car. They didn't realize Nick was with him until he ran across the yard to the front door. He was inside before they could get any pictures. He dropped his bag and picked Kassidy up, kissing her. She giggled about her feet not touching the ground. He put her down but didn't let go.
Flashes blinded Jessica and Dan when they opened the front door to leave. The media guys were calling for Nick to come out. Kassidy stepped out and asked them to cut her some slack. She had kept her word and so had they up to this point. The house and yard were off limits. She couldn't stop them from getting pictures of people coming and going. However, the person in her house was a guest and would not come out for a photo op. They didn't like it, but they conceded.
"You have trained them well," commented Nick from the couch as she closed the door.
"I practiced on a group called Backstreet Boys first."
"Hey now!"
Kassidy kissed him and said, "I'm glad you're here."
"Me too. Do you have everything packed," he asked, rubbing noses with her.
"Pretty much," she replied quietly.
"Have you thought about where your furniture will go?"
"I guess."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Kass tell me."
"My furniture doesn't work in your house."
"What?"
"You heard me! So I guess I will sell it or throw it out."
"No you won't."
"Then what," she asked looking at him, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"We will make them work. All your furniture is special, because it's from your parents."
"I know, but it's all antique. It doesn't exactly go with your house."
"I don't care."
”Really?"
"Really. We will figure it out. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something."
"What?"
"I love my house."
"I love your house too."
"Good, because I want to keep it. But I would also like a place down in the keys. A little place where we can go hide and spend time together."
"But Nick the money."
"Kassidy, it is a practical way to invest my money."
"True."
"Now if we buy the right place some of your stuff could go there. It would be part of our special place."
Kassidy thought a moment. "I like that idea. Have you been looking at places?"
"I've contacted my realtor and she getting together some possibilities. She should have some to show us at the end of the week. What do you say?"
"I say thank you."
"For what?"
"For not making me get rid of my furniture and for making my stuff apart of your place."
"Baby it's our place now."
"Our place. I like the sound of that."
"Me too."
"Nick I'm sorry about not really celebrating your birthday."
"I don't care."
"But 25 is special."
"Yeah well there was too much going on thanks to mom and dad."
"Still I'm sorry and I will make it up to you."
Nick grinned and said, "Promise?"
"Promise! Now, you hungry?"
"Am I me?"
"Of course, come out to the kitchen with me, ye bottomless pit."
After dinner they finished packing up her stuff. Once making sure everything was ready for the movers, they climbed into bed, made love and fell asleep. The next morning, Jessica and Dan arrived early. After breakfast and last minute instructions, Kassidy and Jess left in her car.
Over the past two weeks, Jessica and Kassidy had developed a pattern of working out together at a local gym. It was Saturday and a regular workout day so the photographers outside didn't think twice about Kassidy carrying her duffel bag out to the car. None of the photographers bothered
Following them, because they weren't about to miss out on an opportunity to photograph Nick Carter.
A half-hour later, the guys came out carrying their bags and Nick was dribbling a basketball. He ignored the camera's going off as he quickly got into Dan's car. They headed to the gym and the photographers followed this time. They had gotten their pictures of Nick at the house, now they
wanted a picture of the couple. They camped out in front of the fitness center, because the center's security would not let them inside. Funny, they never noticed Kassidy's car was not in front of the building.
Dan and Nick walked in with their bags to find Kassidy pacing in front of the juice bar and Jessica chewing her nails. She had never been a good sneak. Dan pulled her hand from her mouth and kissed her. The owner of the center took Nick's bag and disappeared. He was putting the bag in the car and making sure none of the reporters had figured out what they were doing. He came back in saying the coast was clear. Kassidy and Jessica cried when they said goodbye. Nick and Kassidy thanked the couple and owner for their help.
They were out the backdoor and an hour down the road before the photographers realized they were gone.
After Jessica and Dan left the center, one of the media guys went inside and "bribed" the owner for information. He said the couple had talked about going to Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Mansion. Cheekwood had walking trails and beautiful gardens. The mansion had been turned into an art museum. He gave the photographer directions. Of course the directions took them way out of their way.
Once at Cheekwood, they scoured the grounds and mansion. As a last resort, they stopped in the gift shop. The person at the register looked at the pictures they showed her and told them she remembered seeing the couple. She asked them if they checked Opry Mills, the biggest mall in town? Again they were given directions that took them the long way. What they didn't know was
the lady at the gift shop was a member of Kassidy's church and a very close friend. Technically, she didn't lie, because she didn't say when she had the last seen the couple, but when she had they did talk about going to Opry Mills.
The photographers wandered around the huge mall for an hour before finally giving up and heading back to Kassidy's house.
The reason for the wild goose chase became apparent as soon as they pulled up to the house. There was a moving van pulled up to the front door. They were momentarily puzzled when they saw things being carried into the house. Jessica and Dan appeared around the back of the truck. Questions were immediately fired at them. Dan held up a hand to silence them.
"I know you are all wondering what's going on. My fiancée will read you statement from Kassidy."
Jessica read, "Hey guys, its Kassidy. I know you are wondering what the heck happened. Some of you may be figuring it out, but I will explain anyway. I made a promise to you that I would not try to lose you when I was out in public. I broke that promise today with good reason. Hopefully by now, my friends are moving into the house. That's right moving in, because they are now the prouder owners. Congratulate them! I pulled a sneak play on you. I won't give you all the details, but suffice it to say with the help of friends Nick and I are on our way home. To our new home that is. Also with the help of the aforementioned friends we manufactured enough time for the
movers to come in and load up my stuff. They are also on their way to our new home. I'm sorry that I pulled a fast one on you, but any move is stressful, then add you guys and it's much worse. I wanted to move out quietly. And with your help we did, because if you hadn't followed us this
morning and then went looking for us we would have had so much commotion here. Finally, I want thank you for playing by my rules the last few weeks. You could have made it unbearable and you didn't. You were only a small pain. Laugh, cause you know you are! Anyway, go home and get some rest. I'm sure I will run into all of you again. Take care until then, Kassidy Rivers."
"So now ladies and gentlemen if you don't mind we are going to finish moving into our new home," stated Dan.
The reporters watched them walk back around the truck and into the house. They began to pack up their equipment and go home. For the most part they grudgingly admitted they liked Kassidy Rivers and her spunk.
Chapter 50
"Nick wake up," Kassidy said softly.
"Hmm?"
"Come on Nicky."
Nick opened one eye and asked, "Why didn't you carry me in? I always carry you in."
"You want to be dropped?"
"Hey I'm not that big."
"Baby you're 6'3"and I'm not. I would drop you or smack your head into the door frame."
"I get the picture," he chuckled as he got out.
Kassidy went to the back of the car to get their bags. Nick joined her, but grabbed her instead of the bags. They laughed as he carried her into the house.
"Welcome home baby," he whispered before capturing her lips.
"Mmmm nice," she said around a yawn.
"Someone's sleepy."
"Some of us didn't sleep all the way from Jacksonville."
"Sorry."
"Don't be. I as fine then, but now."
She yawned again as if for emphasis. Nick took her hand and pulled her to the bedroom. It was early morning. They had taken turns and driven all night. The early morning light was creeping into the room. Kassidy stretched and started to take off her clothes. The wall caught her eye. She
blinked and looked again. She couldn't believe her eyes.
"I take it you did this."
"Yeah. If you don't like it, I can repaint."
Kassidy's kiss cut him off. She turned for a closer look. A tree was painted in the corner of the room just like she had in her condo when they had first met. Nick had added his own touches. There was a bird's nest on one branch and a squirrel eating a nut on another. He had continued the mural on one wall, so it looked like the tree was at the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea. It blended perfectly with the French doors leading to the balcony overlooking the bay. The other wall had a field and mountains spread out behind a rock wall with roses and vines growing over it. It was just like she described it. It was one of her favorite places to visit and was located on the farm of some friends of her parents. She didn't realize she was crying until Nick brush a tear away.
"So you like?"
"No I love it. Just like I love you. Nick I can't believe you did this. When did you do it?"
"A few days ago. I finished it the night before I came up to get you."
"No wonder you look tired."
"I wanted to finish it before you got here. I want to put your bed in here. We can use my bed in the place we buy down in the Keys."
"You have been thinking."
"Hey I only have blonde moments, it's not a constant state of mind."
"I know. Nick thanks for doing this. It means so much. So Carter did you ever see Top Gun?"
"Yeah," replied a puzzled Nick.
"Well Meg Ryan has a great line in that movie."
"What?"
"Take me to bed or lose me forever!"
"Don't have to ask me twice."
Nick and Kassidy made love then slept until the movers called saying they would be there in twenty minutes. They dressed and went out to the kitchen for something to munch on. They both jumped when Lesley came in from outside, which she found very amusing.
"Hey Sis where are the puppies?"
"Can you believe Howie's place?"
"Must have been Maddy's idea," said Kassi.
"Yeah it was. We were talking about how much easier it would be for the movers."
"Good plan."
"Les did Maddy come down here to visit?"
"No. I went to see Aaron and Angel. I wound up making the rounds. Nick don't give me that look. I'm an adult and capable of driving from Tampa to Orlando."
"Lesley."
"Nick."
"Children," chided Kassidy
"Funny," said Nick.
"Fine fight about it later. The movers are here."
They spent the next four hours getting everything moved into the house or put out in the garage. Lucky for them, Nick had a 4-car garage. One section was taken up with his stuff. The next section was filled with Kassidy's things. The other two sections actually had cars. For the time being the Durango and Kassidy's car would stay outside. Kassidy ordered enough pizza for everyone, including the movers. After the movers cleared out, Lesley made an announcement.
"I found a really cool place in Orlando."
"Oh no!"
"Nick."
"No!"
"You are such an ass! Like I need your permission. Remember earlier I'm an adult," exclaimed Lesley.
"I don't care."
"Guys can we sit down and talk about this," pleaded Kassidy.
"She's not doing it. End of discussion," stated Nick.
"See how unreasonable he is," asked Lesley, storming up to her room.
"Nick I think maybe,"
Nick cut her off, "Kassidy stay out of this. It's my family and I will handle it."
Kassidy looked like she had been slapped, she said, "No problem."
She ran upstairs and shut the door to the bedroom. An exasperated Nick went down to his boat. Everyone remained in neutral corners until later that night. Finally, Lesley went to see Kassidy.
"Hey Kassi."
"Hi."
"Are you and Nick in a fight?"
"No. To fight you have to talk and right now we aren't talking."
"It's my fault."
"No Lesley. It just happened. We all got caught up in the moment."
"Nick and I did, but Kassidy you didn't."
"Doesn't matter."
"Why is he so upset that I want to be on my own?"
"Because he's your big brother and he's worried about you. Also because of things with your parents he hasn't been around any of you very much in the past few years. I think he's afraid he will lose you again."
"Never," replied Lesley emphatically.
"I think his mind knows it, but his heart is another matter."
"How do I make him understand?"
"You keep talking to him," answered Kassidy.
"Are you going to take your own advice?"
"Hate when advice ricochets on me," chuckled Kassidy. "Let's go down and check on Shorty."
"Shorty? I like that nickname."
Nick was still sitting on his boat. He was mad and upset, but couldn't bring himself to leave. Lesley was use to him sailing off when he was mad, but Kassidy would worry.
He immediately went on the defensive when he saw them coming. He was not going to allow them to gang up on him.
"So you two got it all worked out and are now coming to let me have it?"
"What are you talking about," asked Kassidy
"Lesley's got you convinced she's right."
"Nick" cried both women.
"Don't Nick me. Lesley you can forget it. You're staying here."
"No I'm not! God Nick. You keep acting this way and I won't give you my new address!"
"So why are you even bothering to tell me about it?"
"I have no idea why I bothered at all," screamed Lesley as she turned to leave.
"Lesley freeze and will both of you please shut up," yelled Kassidy.
"Thank you. Geesh! I swear you two are fighting over something extremely stupid."
"It is not stupid," they both yelled back.
"Yes it is! Damn! You are fighting over what Nick thinks he's got figured out."
"What," asked Nick.
"Nick you haven't given Lesley a chance to tell you what she wants to do. Like where this place is or anything. All you heard was leaving."
"Yeah," retorted Lesley.
"And you young lady aren't any better. You've known your brother longer than I have. You knew how he would react to the announcement. You were on the defensive and came at him with attitude. I think you have gotten so use to dealing with your parents that you went in for the shock value. I also have a feeling you both thought I had taken Lesley's side. I can see from your faces you did. Well guess what? I haven't. Lesley has not presented a side to be on. Now can we all go inside and stop giving the neighbors a show?"
"Yeah," they answered together.
Once inside, Lesley explained, "I wasn't thinking seriously about moving out. I mean I want my own place, but I like it here. When I went up to see Aaron and Angel, I ran into Grace and Maddy at Denise's. Maddy invited me to lunch so I could see the new house. Long story short, I said something about wanting a place of my own while on the house tour. FYI, their house is
gorgeous. I come back here and Howie calls. He asks if I would like to rent his condo when they move into their house."
"And you said yes," interrupted Nick.
"No Mr. Smarty Pants. I told him I needed to talk to you first."
"But you said."
"I said I found this really cool place. Then you went all parental on me."
"Oh."
"Nick I really like his place. It's not far from Denise. I can see Angel and Aaron anytime. Plus both John and Polly live in the building. They can check up on me anytime you want. And its not like you won't just show up from time to time. I'm going to miss you, but I'm closer than when I
was in LA."
"Alright. Alright. I'm sold."
"Really?"
"Yes."
Lesley squealed and ran to hug her brother. Kassidy watched them. She was glad they had worked things out. However, she couldn't deny what Nick said hurt. She realized that he was only stating the obvious. She wasn't family and she needed to stay out of things. She was only trying to help, but she had to remember that not everyone wanted her help. She needed to wait until she was asked. Suddenly she was very tired.
Kissing Nick on the cheek, she said, "I'm going up to bed. You guys have a good night."
"Thanks Kassidy," said Lesley hugging her.
"I'll be up in a few," said Nick.
"No rush."
Kassidy walked into the bedroom. She looked at her bed sitting in front of the tree mural. She willed herself not to cry. Instead she changed into an oversized T-shirt and crawled into bed. The house was quiet, until she heard Nick and Lesley laugh. She buried her face in the pillow and gave into the urge to cry. Her crying had slowed when she heard them come up steps. She lay perfectly still. Nick walked in and whispered her name. Getting no response, he went into the bathroom for a minute. Turning off the light he crawled in beside her. He kissed her gently on the cheek, whispering his love for her and fell asleep with his arm draped over her.
When Kassi was sure he was asleep, she eased out from under his arm and walked out onto the balcony. She watched the rhythmic movement of the water, trying to find the same calm within herself. Dawn came without peace finding her. However, a decision did come with the first rays of sunlight. She was on her own again. She heard Nick step out onto the balcony.
"Morning beautiful," said Nick, running a hand through his hair.
"Morning."
"How long have you been out here?"
"For a bit. I'm going down and make breakfast. Want anything special?"
Nick instantly felt the distance, but dismissed it. "I want my morning kiss."
Kassidy kissed him quickly then darted inside. "See you in the kitchen."
Nick dressed quickly. Kassidy was getting out everything to make waffles. She kept up light conversation. The smell of food woke Lesley. She asked them to go look at Howie's Condo with her. Kassidy told them she needed to run errands. They tried to persuade her, but she stood firm.
After they left Kassidy went to the store. While there she picked up apartment books to look through. Nick and Lesley got back sooner than she expected and found her on the patio. She didn't have time to hide what she was looking at.
"Hey baby what are you doing?"
"Just looking at some apartment books. So did you all have a good time looking at Howie's Den of Love," joked Kassidy.
"Yeah. Why are you looking at the apartment books?"
"Hey Kassi. Apartment books," asked a confused Lesley as she stepped outside.
"Hey Lesley. So you going to move into Howie's place?"
"I think so."
"Kassidy are you going to answer me," asked Nick.
"Sure. What," hedged Kassidy avoiding the inevitable.
"Why are you looking at apartment books," exclaimed Nick.
Kassidy calmly said, "for me."
"Why," asked Lesley and Nick.
"I need a place to live."
"You have a place to live," replied Nick, trying to remain calm.
"Thanks, but I think it's better if I get my own place."
"Kassidy why aren't you talking to me?"
"I am Nick. I've thought it all out," answered Kassidy with a maddening calmness.
"But why? What did I do?"
"Nothing. I just need my own place. Sorry about moving all my stuff in here."
Nick became frantic, he begged, "Kassidy tell me what I did. I swear I'll fix it."
"Nick don't. It's fine. I'm sorry I'm hurting you."
Kassidy moved faster than Nick expected and was in the house before he could stop her. He looked at Lesley who was just as lost. He picked up the phone and called Grace hoping for a clue. Grace called Maddy. Within the hour they were there, for all the good it did. Kassidy was not talking to anyone. She was chatting, but not talking. Grace went downstairs to check on Nick.
He was so upset.
Grace decided the one person that might be able to shed some light on the situation was Michael. After getting Michael on the phone, Grace explained Kassidy's behavior then handed the phone to Nick.
"Nick."
"Michael I don't know how to fix this. I don't know what I did wrong."
"What happened before she got like this?"
"I don't know. I woke up and she was like this."
"What happened yesterday?"
"We got here early. The mover's arrived and unloaded everything. Lesley and I had a fight."
"About?"
"About her moving out."
"Where was Kassidy?"
"She was right there."
"Did you guys fight?"
"No. She tried to help and I told her to stay out of it. We all went our separate ways for awhile then she got us back together. She made us talk and we are fine."
"Did she get quite after that?"
Nick thought a moment before responding, "now that you mention it yeah."
"Nick I'm going to let you in on a little secret about Kassidy. When she gets hurt she shuts down. Also when she goes without sleep and she's hurt, she starts making decisions that aren't in her best interest."
"How did I hurt her?"
"What did you say when she tried to help in the middle of your fight with Lesley."
"I told her to stay out of it, because it was my family. Oh shit."
"Bingo. She sees you and your family as hers. Nick all of her family is gone."
"Man I screwed up."
"You did, but you didn't mean to. Now don't beat yourself up too much, because she is also acting like a stubborn child. Get Grace to take the phone to Kassidy."
"Mike do you think she will forgive me?"
"Yes. And you have to forgive her."
"I'm not mad."
"Maybe not now, but later when you think about it. If you do, just forgive her. She gets scared that no one wants her and she acts from that fear. I think your love will eventually get through that barrier, but this will probably happen again."
"OK. Thanks Michael."
"Sure. You can name your first born after me."
"Deal. Here's Grace."
Grace took the phone up and handed it to Kassidy. She pulled Maddy out of the room.
"Michael? I didn't hear the phone ring."
"I didn't call."
"Who called you?"
"Doesn't matter. Care to tell me what the hell you are doing?"
"I'm packing."
"Why are you doing this to the man you love?"
"I'm not."
"Bull shit. Now I know Nick said something when he was mad."
Kassi interrupted, "but it's the truth. I'm not family. I'll never be family."
"Wrong. You are becoming a family. Family is built. You have to cut him some slack too. He's new at this. Kassidy that boy is losing his mind right now. He's so scared he's lost you."
Those words from her best friend made her stop. She thought for a moment then collapsed on the floor crying.
"Oh God Michael what have I done?"
"You acted scared. Didn't sleep at all last night right?"
"Umm."
"Save it. I already know."
"Mike I can't face him."
"Oh yes you will. Don't make me come down there."
"Michael," whined Kassidy.
"Nope. You did this now you have to fix it. This is a learning experience for you."
"But why?"
"Because you haven't learned this lesson yet!"
"Bite me."
"No that's Nick job."
They talked until Kassidy had her courage built up and Michael had done enough scolding. She hung up and called to Nick. He bounded in the room, shutting the door on three people and four dogs. After a moment they ran to each other and apologizing. They talked and yelled a little, but when it was all done they were fine.
The girls breathed a sigh of relief when the couple emerged from the bedroom. Lesley decided to hang out with Grace that night and give the couple their space.
After everyone was gone, Nick held Kassidy while she slept. He finally fell asleep, but kept waking up to see if she was there. Kassidy woke up after midnight. She found Nick watching her.
"Baby why aren't you sleeping."
"I'm trying. I fall asleep, but keep waking up thinking you're gone."
Kassidy turned to face him and said, "Nick I promise I'm not going anywhere. I couldn't even leave today. I'm sorry I scared you. I will try to never do it again."
"Promise."
"Yes. I love you."
"I love you too."
"Now go to sleep baby. I'll be here in the morning."
Nick pulled her closer to him and drifted off to sleep. Kassidy watched him sleep. She thanked God for Nick and her friends. She also thanked God for blessing her with this chance at happiness.
Chapter 51
The coming months flew by in a flurry of activity. Both Backstreet and Lesley were in the studio preparing new albums. Aaron was on the road during the summer and early fall promoting his newest album. Lesley and BSB also hit the road in early fall. Grace was in Miami working hard on her degree and on schedule for her December graduation date. Maddie was on the road with BSB and helping with wardrobe. Kassidy had gone up to Atlanta with the dogs. She was helping Leighanne for the first month or so after the baby arrived.
Brian Thomas Littrell, Jr. was born on July 27th. He had his mother’s hair and his father’s eyes. He also had a set of lungs on him and Brian boasted that he was either meant to be a singer or a Baptist Preacher. All the dogs weren’t sure about this new addition, but they tolerated it for the time being.
Leighanne and Kassidy were also co-conspirators with AJ. He had taken Grace at her word about marrying him at anytime if she didn’t have to plan it. All AJ had told Grace was he was planning a party for her graduation and he had asked Kassidy and Leighanne to help.
Kassidy had almost laughed herself silly when she saw how AJ wanted the invitations sent out. It was a stuffed Winnie the Pooh holding a bone. The bone had the word Open engraved on it. Inside was the invitation, which read…
Bone is throwing a Graduation Party for his Pooh and you’re invited!!!
When: Saturday, December 15th
Where: Our House.
Time: Show up about 5:00pm
You can get directions and stuff from Bone, Kass, or Leigh.
Just remember if ya ain’t here you’re going be missing something big! You will be kickin’ yourself for the rest of your days, but we don’t want to hear about!
It was typical AJ. Leighanne and Kassidy promised him paybacks were hell after they spent an entire weekend putting together and mailing all 250 invitations. He was impressed with how sneaky Kassidy was. She had managed to find out what kind of dress Grace would like. She also managed to get Grace to name her attendants for when they did get married.
It was the first week of December and Leighanne had left Thomas with her parents. He had a stuffy nose. She and Kassidy had flown down to Miami for the last two dates of BSB’s tour. The guys were driving straight from New Orleans to Miami.
Nick opened the hotel room door and found Kassidy asleep. Sitting his stuff down, he took a seat on the bed beside her. The moonlight through the crack in the openings illuminated the room enough for him to see her. He chuckled because when they weren’t together she always slept in the middle of the bed. He moved her hair which was had fallen across her face. Her nose wrinkled because it tickled. She inhaled deeply. She turned and curled up around him. He ran his fingers through her hair. She stirred, but didn’t wake. His sat and watched her for a few minutes, feeling the tension leave his body. He finally stood and pulled off his clothes. Scooted under the covers, he reached for her and she snuggled closer with her head on his chest. She whispered his name in her sleep. Her gentle breathing lulled him to sleep in no time.
The following morning he awakened slowly. He was feeling pleasure, but it was not a conscious thought right away. He was enjoying what was happening to his body. Even more so as he became fully awake. Finally, his mind registered what was happening to him, but at the same moment his orgasm hit him. As he gasp for air Kassidy appeared from under the covers.
“Morning.”
“Oh Baby, morning,” he replied, kissing her.
“Why didn’t you wake me up when you got in?”
“You looked so peaceful.”
“You did too this morning. Maybe I should have let you sleep.”
“No you can wake me up like that anytime.”
“Is that right?”
“Yes, but…” he trailed off.
“But what,” asked Kassidy as he reversed their positions.
“My turn!”
Kassidy laughed as Nick disappeared under the covers. Her laughter was replaced with moans as Nick went to work. An hour later found them, eating breakfast, courtesy of room service.
“Have you got this party for Grace all planned,” asked Nick.
“I think so.”
“Good, because I swear you’ve talked Bone more this tour than me.”
“Poor baby. Besides really I didn’t talk to him more. OK maybe I did, but I had too.”
“I know. We actually to drop him at the Condo first last night.”
“Doesn’t surprise me. What do you guys have planned for today?”
“We are free until 3:00 then it’s over to the venue.”
“Why so early?”
“Last fan conference of the tour. You’re coming right?”
“I’m not letting you out of my sight.”
“Good.”
“So you are free for the next few hours huh.”
“Yep.”
“Gosh whatever will you do?”
“Gee I don’t know.”
“Well you do look tired.”
“Guess I should take a nap.”
“I guess you should. Want company?”
“Well you’re not letting me out of your sight.”
“I did say that,” she said with a smirk.
By now, they were both standing by the bed. She pulled on the belt holding his robe together. It came loose and she slipped the robe from his shoulders. Her body reacted to seeing his. He removed her robe and they lay on the bed exploring each other. Getting reacquainted after the long absence. The phone rang. They both grimaced, but Nick answered.
“Better be good.”
“Hey Nick. It’s Bone. Hey you sound kinda out of breath”
“What do you want Bone?”
“I was checking to see what you guys were doing. Grace is kicking me out of here. She says she has to study for her finals today or she can’t come tonight.”
“Come on over Bone.”
“You sure.”
“Yes.”
“Thanks Nick!”
“No problem. See you in a few.”
“Hey Nicky, I'll be there in an hour. Does that give enough to time to finish what you started with your woman?”
“AJ!”
“Hey I’m preoccupied, but not clueless. Just go finish.”
AJ hung up before Nick could reply. Nick explained. Kassidy stood up and walked to the bathroom. Nick was grumbling, because AJ had interrupted. Kassidy turned on the water and walked back out to the bed. She explained that they both needed showers and he needed to finish what he started. This way they could accomplish both. She made it half way back to the bathroom, before Nick picked her up and ran into the shower.
“Hey Bone,” greeted Kassidy as she opened the door.
“Good to see I didn’t interrupt again.”
“If you had, you would have waited in the hall.”
“Man you are direct.”
“No I’m teasing.”
“Hey Bone.”
“Sup Nicky!”
They all sat down and looked at each other. They were at a loss for something to do. As they laughed the phone rang. This time it was Brian asking Nick to play b-ball. He agreed and left. Kassidy, Leighanne, and AJ took the opportunity to discuss the wedding.
By 3:30pm they were at the venue. Grace arrived right behind the BSB bus. It was good to see Maddie. Kristen had even flown down to New Orleans. So all the ladies watched the Fan Conference from the back of the room. The fans for the most part were all excited and asked great questions. One girl asked Nick why he was dating an older woman. He replied, because he loved her. After the conference, the guys did a short interview with MTV, followed by a light meal and getting ready for the show.
The concert went smoothly. They were pleased. The guys threw an end of the tour party to thank the band, dancers, and crew. They had it at a bowling alley. Everyone had a great time and managed to crawl into bed around 5am.
Early the next morning, Maddie came to Kassidy and Nick’s room. She was dancing around when she got there. She asked Nick if he would mind leaving so she could talk to Kassidy alone. He got dressed and wandered out of the room, still half asleep. She only had to pull the pregnancy test from her bag and Kassidy knew why she was there. Maddie made Kassidy read the instructions and walk her through the steps from the other side of the bathroom door. They both paced around the room waiting for time to be up. When it was Maddie made Kassidy look. It was positive. Maddie began to cry.
“Maddie isn’t this a good thing?”
“Yes it is. I’m so happy,” sobbed Maddie.
Kassidy chuckled, “Good to know. Make sure Howie is sitting when you tell him this. Preferably on the floor.”
“Why?”
“I think it will shock him and he may faint.”
“You don’t think he wants the baby?”
“I know he wants it. I just don’t think he expected his little swimmers to work this fast. You two haven’t been married a year yet. But he will be so happy. Now get out of here and tell him.”
Maddie hugged her friend and ran down the hall to tell her husband. Kassidy had been right, he did get a bit pale when she told him, but then he let out a yell and hugged her. He was on the phone to his mom in seconds. Maddie just smiled while watching the man she loved tell everyone about the baby.
Nick came back with breakfast only to find Maddie gone. He figured it had been a girl talk so he didn’t ask about why she had been there only 3 hours after they left the bowling alley. They had breakfast and he went to take his shower. He did a double take when he saw the pregnancy test in the trash. He panicked for a split second then got excited. Could he be a dad? He walked out holding the box.
“Kassidy do you have something to tell me?”
Kassidy turned from her computer to face him saying, “no.”
“You sure,” he asked holding up the box.
“Oh Nick, no. I’m not.”
“Oh then who is?”
“Maddie, but don’t say anything.”
“Oh.”
“Nick are you disappointed?”
He hesitated, “I don’t know, maybe.”
“Come here,” stated Kassidy and he joined her at the table. “I know you want kids. Are you saying if it happened you would be happy.”
“Yeah. Don’t you want children?”
“Yes, but this is one of those things about me being older that sucks.”
“Why?”
“Nick I’m 35, almost 36. Every year after 30 increases the chances for problems.”
“So you don’t want my children?”
“No Nick I want only your children.”
“Good. Let’s not think about this now. We are meeting everyone for lunch. I’m showering. Care to join me?”
“I better not. We have to leave in 20 minutes.”
“Oh crap,” exclaimed Nick as he jumped in the shower.
