Leighanne heard music. It was quiet, but there was no mistaking it was coming from the guys' dressing room. She peeked in to see Grace sitting at the keyboard the guys kept in their dressing room. Grace had not noticed her. She listened for another moment then went back to the room set up for interviews. The guys were just finishing their final interview. Leighanne got Brian's attention and had him follow her. His ears perked up as he got closer to the dressing room. Leighanne stopped him just short of entering the room. They listened as the person began to sing.
Brian looked at Leighanne and mouthed Grace? Leighanne nodded yes. They continued to listen until she stopped playing. Brian eased into the room.
"Oh hi Brian," greeted Grace, suddenly nervous.
"Hey Grace. I didn't know you played and sang."
"Well I don't really."
"What I just heard sounded like you do."
"I've study piano for 9 years."
"It shows. You're very good."
"Nah," mumbled Grace.
"Yes you are and you have a pretty voice. What were you singing?"
"Nothing really, just something I've had going around in my head."
"You wrote that," asked Brian.
Grace said, "Yes, but its not big deal."
"It is a big deal. Grace you're talented."
"Thanks," said a blushing, but unconvinced Grace.
"Will you play it again?"
"Really?"
"Really."
Brian pulled a chair up beside Grace. She started playing the music again. She played the melody then sang the chorus. Brian stopped her and asked if she had more lyrics to the song. She started again and reluctantly began singing the first verse.
The other guys wandered down the hall with Kassidy. Leighanne told them to be quiet. She led them to the door like she had Brian. Kassidy smiled when she heard Grace playing and singing. At the last chorus, they heard Brian's voice join Grace's. When they finished, everyone entered the room clapping.
"Grace why didn't you tell anyone you sing and play," asked Howie.
"I don't know."
"Kassidy did you know she could do this," asked Leighanne.
"Yes."
Kevin asked, "Why didn't you tell us."
"Because I promised Grace I wouldn't."
"Well your cat is out of the bag Pooh."
"I know, but really it's no big deal."
"Now you see what I've been fighting since I first met her," commented Kassidy.
"Well now you have us to work on her too," replied AJ.
"Now wait a minute, we don't need to all gang up on her. Grace I would like to hear some more of your stuff," said Brian.
"Guys, you need to get ready for the show," said James as he came in the room with the makeup artist.
"Come on AJ, makeup time," ordered their makeup artist.
"Come with me Pooh."
AJ took Grace with him to the other side of the room. He could see she was very uncomfortable with all the attention. There was still plenty of time to get her to open up about her music. Wait, there wasn't plenty of time. AJ realized their two guests would be gone in 4 days. The thought made him sad. He hadn't expected to have any reaction to them leaving. Of course, he hadn't thought about how much of an impact they would have on him and everyone else. Kassidy was funny, caring, and straightforward. Grace was
sweet, pretty, and innocent. Now he knew she had a talent to write, sing, and play music. It was a surprise, but then he guessed Pooh had lots of surprises. He briefly wished they were staying longer.
Kassidy was quietly talking with Brian about Grace's talent. She explained that was how they had originally started chatting. She went on to tell them about Grace being president of her school's National Honors Society, co-editor of the newspaper and a straight A student. Kassidy also explained that they were lucky enough to experience her quick wit. Kassidy said that along with the fact that she was just a really good-hearted person were her best qualities.
"Kassidy," called AJ.
"What AJ?"
"Grace says you can sing too."
"She did?"
"She said you have a range to kill for," replied Howie.
"She is just trying to get the spotlight off herself."
"I am not. You know you can sing."
"So sing for us," said Nick.
"Not in this lifetime."
"Come on Kassidy," begged Nick.
"Turn those puppy dog eyes from me Carter. It ain't happening. Oh look it's time for two more people to get makeup done," finished Kassidy as she pushed Nick across the room.
"You will sing for us before you leave," said Brian as he walked past her.
Kassidy made a face at him, but the issue was dropped as the guys shifted into show mode. They finished getting ready. After the meet and greet, everyone gathered for the preshow ritual. Grace was with AJ like always. Kassidy found herself next Nick. As they held hands Nick marveled again at how small her hand was compared to his. It made him feel like a big giant to stand beside her. However, the uncomfortable feeling left him when he felt her squeeze his hand. He sneaked a glance sideways and she winked at him.
For the first time, they watched the show from inside the barrier. Leighanne had suggested it. It was a bit unsettling to be so prominently on display, but they quickly forgot about anyone else when the guys took
the stage. The guys sang to them and threw stuff animals at them. They didn't expect AJ to pull them up on stage for Perfect Fan. Kevin introduced them and explained why they were there, then moved on to introduce his mother-daughter pair. Kassidy laughed as she watched AJ literally dance Grace around the stage. Grace was blushing, but Kassidy could tell by the way her eyes were dancing that she was having the time of her life. AJ escorted them off the stage when the song was done. In no time the show was
over and they were back on the bus.
Brian and Kevin were excited because they were heading straight to Lexington, KY. They had a free day then were playing two nights in Lexington. They arrived from Columbus OH at 2am. Brian, Leighanne and
Kevin had gotten off the bus right as they got into Lexington. A car had been waiting just off the interstate. They of course were staying with family. Everyone else went on to the Hyatt that was attached to Rupp Arena. A crowd was gathered outside. They all got off the bus quickly. Inside James handed out the room keys. Kassidy and Grace found their room. As they were getting ready for bed there was a knock at the door.
"AJ what are you doing here," asked Kassidy.
"I can't sleep."
"Well I can."
"I'm not sleepy," offered Grace.
"Grace you want to come back to my room and talk?"
"Kassidy can I?"
"Why do I get the feeling this isn't quiet so spur of the moment," inquired Kassidy.
"We were talking on the bus and both realized we weren't sleepy," explained AJ.
"Grace all you had to do was ask if you could hang out in AJ's room."
"So I can go," asked Grace.
"Yes you can," replied Kassidy. Throwing an arm around AJ she continued, "My dear Alexander James, if you try anything with this child I will know."
"I'm not going to try anything Kassidy."
"Good answer. As for you young lady," said Kassidy putting her other arm around Grace. "You try anything with him I will know."
"Yes ma'am."
"If you all do anything, I will be forced to neuter the Boner."
"Ow, thanks for the graphic visualization," said AJ, his hand instinctually covering himself.
"Anytime Bone. Now you guys go have a good talk. I'm going to bed."
"OK. Thanks Kassidy and we won't do anything," said Grace as she hugged the older woman.
AJ led Grace to his room. Once there, they were both awkward. Grace finally just stretched out on AJ's bed and continued the conversation they were having on the bus. AJ lay down by her and they both relaxed. Grace talked about her family and life at home. AJ told her about his new house. Somehow they got on the topic of Kassidy. Grace explained that Kassidy was originally from Lexington. Her parents had died when she was in her early twenties. AJ was surprised to learn this about Kassidy.
"Wow she was young. I wonder why she didn't tell us about being from here."
"She probably didn't want to have to explain about her parents and stuff."
"Maybe," said AJ with a yawn.
"Stop it," said Grace also yawing.
"Sorry I'm fading."
"So am I. I guess I should leave."
"Don't."
"What," asked Grace.
"Don't go. Can we snuggle up here together and sleep? I miss having someone to cuddle with."
"I've never had anyone to cuddle with."
"If you aren't comfortable I understand," replied AJ.
"No. I would like to stay."
"Good. Come here," said AJ, opening his arms.
Grace scooted closer, still facing him. Their eyes locked for a moment. Grace licking her lips brought AJ's gaze down to them. He watched her lean closer. He couldn't have stopped even if Kassidy had walked in that moment. He leaned forward and captured her lips in a gentle kiss. Her lips were so soft. He pulled back and looked into her eyes. She had a look of wonder. Slowly she turned over and he pulled her back against his body. He buried his nose in her hair inhaling. It smelled like he thought it would…sweet.
He whispered, "Night Pooh."
"Night AJ."
Never thought I'd be so young, and feel so alone.
Be so empty yet so full of false hope.
Be so sorry for what I let go.
When there's nothing left like home
There's not a hand to hold."
Chapter 11
"Morning everyone," greeted AJ, as he and Grace walked up to the table where their friends were having breakfast.
"Morning. You two kissed," state Kassidy in a matter of fact tone, causing Howie to choke on his coffee.
Nick sputtered orange juice as he said, "What?"
A wide-eyed Grace asked, "How did you know?"
"I wasn't 100% sure."
"Oh you are good," said AJ.
"Yes I am," agreed Kassidy with a smirk.
"Now back to this kiss," said Howie.
"It was nothing," started Grace.
"Exactly. One little kiss," finished AJ.
Thankfully, Kassidy changed the subject. "What are you all doing today?"
"Pooh and I are going shopping. You guys want to come?"
"I will," replied Howie.
"I have some stuff to do," answered Kassidy.
"I think I will just hang out here," said Nick.
"Cool. I'm going to take a shower," replied AJ.
"Me too," said Grace.
"Meet you back down here in 30 minutes D?"
"Sure AJ."
AJ, Grace and Howie went back upstairs. Nick and Kassidy finished their breakfast and walked to the elevator.
"So you are just going to hang out here?"
"Yep. Don't feel like getting mobbed."
"Do you really want to be cooped up all day?"
"No. Why?"
"Would you like to visit my friends with me? You'll be mob by animals and small children. They will do it, because you are a new person for them to meet."
"Yeah I'll go."
"Good."
Nick followed Kassidy to her room. She called downstairs and told them to have her rental waiting out front idling. Nick didn't want Billy to go with them. He just wanted to do something normal. He trusted Kassidy to not get him in a situation where he would need one. He would check in once they were gone.
he valet had the car idling in front of the hotel. Kassidy and Nick were in and gone before anyone noticed. Nick commented on how well Kassidy knew her way around Lexington. She explained it was her hometown. He was surprised she hadn't mentioned it before, but didn't question her.
Soon they pulled up in front of a modest home in a quiet neighborhood.
As they got out of the car Nick heard the barking of what seemed like two large dogs. Kassidy saw his expression and reached for his hand. Nick again marveled as her hand appeared to get lost in his larger one. She quickly told him the dogs would like him, because he was with her.
The door opened to reveal a woman with dark hair holding back Chase, a German Shepherd, and Bo, a Black Lab, as Kassidy introduced them. Just as Kassidy said, the dogs took an instant liking to him. The cats were warier. He counted five cats, but knew he wouldn't keep the names straight. Kassidy introduced him to one of her closest friends, Lee Randall. Before they could really begin talking, the sound of small feet running up steps interrupted them.
"Kassidy! Kassidy!"
"Devie! Hunter!"
Two children with blonde hair immediately pulled Kassidy to the floor. They hugged her and talked a mile a minute until the girl noticed Nick.
"Whose that?"
"That's Nick," replied Kassidy.
"Is he your boyfriend," asked the little boy.
"No Devin. He's my friend."
"OK. Hi I'm Devin."
"Hi Devin. Nice to meet you," responded Nick as he joined them on the floor.
"I'm Hunter and I'm 4."
"Wow 4! That's cool Hunter."
Nick got acquainted with Kassidy's friend Lee and all her family. Including her husband, Allen, when he got home from running errands. They spent the morning hanging out and having fun. Kassidy watched Nick play with the kids outside. He was so relaxed.
"He's cute," stated Lee.
"Yes he is."
"So why did you bring him along," asked Allen.
"Because he was going to stay cooped up in his hotel room all day."
"That's no fun. Why did he want to," asked Lee.
"He didn't, but it's that or get mobbed most places he goes. I've learned the second he is recognized screams happen, followed by him being surrounded."
"How did he manage to get here," asked Allen.
"Simple. I knew none of the fans waiting outside would pay attention to a regular rental car. Also we moved fast enough that they never got a good look at him."
"Poor guy. I will give him this, he's wonderful with kids," commented Lee.
"Yeah he is. He has 3 younger sisters and a younger brother. However, he hasn't seen them since before Christmas."
"Why," asked Lee.
"He and his parents are going through growing pains."
"Man he's not had it easy."
"No, but he is doing what he loves."
"Allen fire up the grill. You guys can stay for lunch?"
"Lunch," asked Nick as he stepped inside.
"Yes lunch Nick. You want to stay," asked Kassidy
"Sure. Um...Hunter wanted some water."
Lee grabbed a glass.
"I'm manning the grill. Want to help me Nick," asked Allen.
"Sure," replied Nick as he followed Allen back outside with water in hand.
After they were outside, Lee said, "Articulate boy."
"Cut him some slack. He gets shy."
"You sure are protective of him. Are you two..."
Kassidy interrupted, "NO! I'm 10 years older than him."
"So."
"No. Next subject."
They had lunch out on the deck. The kids were completely in love with Nick. Kassidy watched him. He looked happy. The sun dancing off his hair made him even more handsome. After lunch it was naptime. Kassidy took Devin and Hunter to Devin's room. They all stretched out on Devin's racecar bed. Kassidy softly began singing to them. She was sing Kenny Loggin's "Christopher Robbins" song as Hunter called it. Nick listened to her sing from the kitchen.
"Doesn't she have a great voice," whispered Lee from behind him.
"Yeah. Grace said she could sing, but we didn't know she could sing like that," said a stunned Nick.
"She's always done a good job of hiding her voice. She is like the Pied Piper. You could put her in the middle of field and once she started singing any children within earshot come to her. It is the most amazing thing."
Nick continued listen. He watched as she slipped out of the room and shut the door. She turned to see him standing in the kitchen doorway and blushed. He smiled.
"Lee can Nick hang out here for awhile? I need to run an errand."
"Sure."
"Wait. Why can't I go with you?"
"I will only be a few minutes and you really wouldn't want to go."
"Well OK."
"Thanks Nick. See you guys in a bit," said Kassidy as she grabbed her keys and purse.
After she was out the door, Nick asked, "Lee can I borrow a car?"
"You want to follow her, don't you."
"Yeah."
"Here take my Blazer. Let me give you directions. I know where she's going."
Lee gave him her keys and the directions. Nick followed. He saw Kassidy ahead of him at a light. She turned left into a cemetery. He followed her in. She parked and got out. He pulled up behind her and did the same.
"If you wanted to come that badly you could have just said so," commented Kassidy with a small smile.
"Well I didn't know," retorted Nick. "Kassidy what are we doing here?"
"I'm here to see my parents and you are following me."
"Your parents? Oh God Kassidy I didn't know."
"It's OK Nick. I didn't tell you."
They stopped in front of a head stone that read Clyde and Mary Rivers: In loving Memory. Nick looked at the birth and death dates and realized two things. One Kassidy's parents were older when they had her and two they died less than a year apart.
"I'm their only child. They were married 18 years before I was born. They died 10 months apart. They were both older," recited Kassidy.
"Wow."
"Yep."
"Hey mom and dad. This is Nick. He's a really good guy with an amazing voice. Mom you'd have made him sing for you if you two had met him. And Dad he's a sports nut like you. Of course, you'd have to set him straight about which teams are the best. I bet you think I'm insane talking to them like this."
"Who me? Nah. I think you're really cool. Did you hear that Mr. and Mrs. Rivers? I think you're daughter is cool. And she sings like an angel."
"You really think that?"
"Yeah I do."
"Thanks."
They stood there in silence as a cold January wind blew over them. The sun ducked behind a cloud. Kassidy shivered and Nick put his arm around her. For some unexplained reason this brought them both comfort. Finally, they headed back to the Randall's. They talked to Lee and Allen until the kids woke up. As the sun was going down, they headed back to the hotel.
"There you are," exclaimed James Michaelson as they got off the elevator on their floor.
"Hi James," greeted Kassidy.
"Where the hell have you been?"
"Oops I forgot to call and tell you I had left," responded Nick.
"That's right you did. We've been trying to reach you."
"You have? Wait," said Nick pulling his cell out of his pocket. "Oh no, it got turned off. I'm really sorry James."
"Well that doesn't cut it. We didn't know where you were."
"I said I was sorry."
"Nick sometimes I wonder if you would loose your head if it wasn't attached."
"Hey," snapped Kassidy. "He said he was sorry. Cut him some slack. I asked him to go with me. I broke the rules, because I took him out of here without Billy. If you are going to be mad at anyone, be mad at me."
"No Kassidy. I deserve it. I was stupid and forgot," started Nick.
Kassidy whirled around to look at him. She said, "You are not stupid. Don't ever say it. You acted like a normal human being. I will not have your good day ruined. As for you James, it's done. He's back safe. It's my fault and in three days I will be gone. If anything had happened I would have called you so just chill. And further more don't put him down. He is a human being, who happens to make a lot of money for you. Back off."
"Fine. Look Nick, just let us know next time," stated James.
"I will James. Promise."
Nick and Kassidy headed to her room and found Grace and AJ watching TV. Soon Howie and Marcus
joined them. They ordered room service and settled into watch the Thursday night shows. They were all caught up in ER. Halfway through the episode, Anthony Edward's character, Mark Green comes home. His father, who is in the last stages of emphysema, becomes agitated and starts experiencing breathing
difficulties. Kassidy got about 20 seconds into the scene and had to leave the room. Grace started to follow, but Nick went instead.
He found her out in the hall staring blankly at the elevator with tears streaming down her face. He touched her shoulder softly and she looked up at him. Kassidy covered her mouth in an attempt to muffle her crying. Nick wrapped his arm around her and led her to his room.
Once inside, she collapsed on the bed sobbing. Nick didn't know what to do. He finally lay down beside her and pulled her to him. She let him hold her while she cried. After an hour, she began to calm down.
"Kassidy what happened," asked Nick in a quiet, soothing tone.
"My dad had emphysema. He sounded just like that when he couldn't breath. It was just too much. I don't ever want to hear that sound again."
"You don't have to Kassidy," said Nick as he held her tighter.
"I'm sorry Nick."
"For what?"
"For getting you in trouble today. For crying on you like this."
"First of all James will get over it. Second the shirt is fine."
Kassidy yawned and Nick asked, "Sleepy."
"Yeah. Crying like that wears a person out."
"Do you want me to take you back to your room?"
"No. I don't want to keep them from watching a movie, but I guess I better go."
"No you can stay here," he said then realized she was asleep.
He pulled her closer and listened to her breathe. It lulled him to sleep.
Chapter 12
Kassidy bolting upright on the bed woke Nick, who exclaimed, "What's wrong!"
"I slept here all night."
"I know. I was here with you."
"Grace must be worried," said Kassidy.
"Kassidy she called last night. She knows you're here."
"Oh good," said a relieved Kassidy. "Oh God. She must think we."
Nick interrupted, "No she doesn't. I explained everything to her."
"OK. Actually, I'm sure she didn't think that anyway."
"Why?"
"Well it's not like we would do anything."
"Yeah. I mean to you I'm just a kid," Nick replied softly.
"No, I meant, because you have a girlfriend and would not be interested in someone like me."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm so much older."
"Oh," he said.
The silence got to Kassidy.
"For the record, I don't think you are kid."
"No?"
"No. I think you are very kind guy, who is becoming a man. I just wish..."
"Wish what?"
Kassidy looked into Nick's eyes and continued, "I just wish you knew how great you are and that you deserve to be treated with the same kindness you've shown me. For the record I don't think your perfect. You get pissy from time to time and you don't always think before acting. However, that description fits most people, including me."
"Yeah it does," laughed Nick.
"But in here," said Kassidy laying her hand on his chest, over his heart.
"In here is what counts and you have a good heart. Don't let others tell you different. Someday, I hope you remember this talk and have the courage to stand up for yourself."
Neither spoke. They just looked in each other's eyes. Kassidy now understood when people say the world seems to fall away, because there was nothing but the two of them. She felt his heart speed up under her
fingertips and hers raced to keep the same pace. A knock at the door broke the spell. Sighing, Nick got up to answer it. He could still feel the heat of her hand on his chest.
"Ya decent?"
"AJ!"
"Only joking. So how are you guys?"
"We are fine. Did you two behave," asked Kassidy.
Grace blushed and said, "yes."
“Grace can I have the key? I want to shower."
"Sure. We came to see if you wanted to get breakfast with us."
"I can after my shower," replied Kassidy, purposely not answering for Nick.
"I can too. Let me get ready," answered Nick.
"Great. Kassidy we will hang out here," said AJ.
"OK. I will be back in shortly."
Kassidy walked down the hall in a daze. Entering the room, she pulled someclothes out of her suitcase. Once in the shower she thought about last night. Nick was the last person she ever expected to come after her when she was upset. She really hadn't expected anyone. She vaguely remembered hearing the phone ring. She had heard Nick whispering, but thought she was dreaming. Then there was the moment when she woke up. She felt so warm and secure in his arms and it had startled her. She placed her hand against the shower wall as she had on Nick's chest. She could feel him under her hand. His eyes were so blue and so open. He was completely relaxed. She wondered what it would feel like to kiss him. Cranking up the cold water she chastised herself. She was not going to think about Nick Carter in that way. It was useless.
Kassidy went back to Nick's room. They decided it would be better for the ladies to bring breakfast back and eat in the room. After eating, they were lazy for the next two hours, until it was time for the guys to head over to the arena for a press conference. Kassidy and Grace went with them.
At Rupp Arena, they met Brian and Kevin's families. Everyone was very nice.
The show was wonderful. Kevin and Brian were again overwhelmed with the outpouring of emotions from the people of their hometown. Nothing had changed since they were last there. Again Brian, Leighanne, and Kevin went home with the guys' families. The rest went to hang out in the girls'
room. Kassidy had noticed a change in AJ. In the last few days he hadn't gone out clubbing with Howie. It was hard to believe they would be leaving in 2 days. Howie went to bed around 4am. Nick and AJ never attempted to leave. AJ slept cuddled up with Grace. Kassidy again found Nick's arms around her.
Dennis awakened them the next morning when he came to collect Grace for their morning run. Dennis had twisted his ankle two nights before and had been unable to run. He was better now. He was surprised to find Nick and AJ in the room. Kassidy and Nick never heard him. AJ left with Grace and Dennis, leaving Kassidy and Nick to sleep.
The phone ringing woke Kassidy. She had to climb over Nick to get it. It was her best friend Michael inviting her to lunch. She and her husband Jerrod had just moved into their first home. Kassidy asked if she could bring some friends. Michael said bring'em on. Nick stretched as Kassidy lay across him to hang up the phone. He asked where they were going. Kassidy told him. They called AJ and he came back down.
AJ called James and explained where they were and that they were going without bodyguards. James fussed, but AJ won. James made him promise they would be back in plenty of time for the show. Kassidy called the front desk making arrangements for the car to be waiting. This time the guys were recognized as they came out of the hotel, but still managed to get away without being followed with the help of Marcus, Billy and Tom. James had sent the three bodyguards down just in case they were needed.
Kassidy followed Michael's instructions. She pulled into the driveway and everyone followed her to the front door. She didn't knock, but instead walked in.
"Hello," greeted Jerrod. "Come on in."
"Hi Jerrod. How are you," asked Kassidy, hugging her best friend's husband.
"I'm great. How are you?"
"I'm good."
Kassidy introduced Jerrod to everyone. Jerrod was an outgoing guy who was perfect for her shy best friend. Michael and Kassidy had met in high school and been friends ever since. Michael came from the upstairs and met everyone. She took them on a quick tour of the house, while Jerrod finished preparing lunch. Soon they were all sitting on the deck eating lunch.
"I like you're house."
"Thanks Grace. We love it. I knew it was the one for us the second I sawit," stated Michael.
"How did you get the name Michael," asked AJ.
"My mom loved the name and originally everyone was convinced I was going to be a boy."
"I like," responded AJ.
"I do too," said Jerrod.
"You better," teased Michael. "Kassi why are you staring at me?"
"Because there is something different and that unfinished room upstairs...It's not like you to leave a room undone."
The couple exchanged a look then Michael looked at Kassidy and smiled.
"How far along are you," asked Kassidy.
"In the fourth month."
"WoooHooo," screamed Kassidy.
She got up and hugged her best friend then Jerrod.
"It's time for the happy feet dance," she exclaimed, dancing around the deck.
"Congratulations," said Grace, then to the guys who had blank expressions.
"She's pregnant."
"Oh," they said together.
Kassidy stopped by her friend and talked to her stomach. "Hey in there this is Kassidy. I'm going to be the crazy aunt by proxy. Everyone else will teach you all the mundane things in life. I get to teach you how to dance and sing. Then there is how to climb on things and how to look really innocent when you are getting in trouble. Although your mother can help with the innocent look. Everyone thinks she's an angel."
"Oh no. Honey do have to leave the baby alone with her ever," asked Jerrod with a smile.
"I'm hurt. Devastated. You act like I would be a bad influence. Your wife grew up around me and look how she turned out. I mean you married her!"
"Yes I did and got you in the bargain."
"This was a bad thing?"
"Not at all," laughed Jerrod.
"Good. Now tell me everything. Sorry guys. I didn't mean to ignore you."
"No problem. We understand," said Grace.
"Grace why don't you go try out Michael's antique piano," suggested Kassidy.
"Please do Grace. I just had it tuned when we moved in."
"Goodie! Pooh is going to play for us," said AJ pulling Grace inside the house.
Nick watched them go in then looked at Kassidy. He seemed a tad unsure of where he should be. He wanted to stay with Kassidy, but figured she wanted to be alone with her friends. He finally got up and followed the others in the house. Kassidy watched him leave and Michael watched her.
"What is going on between you and Nick," asked Michael.
"Well there's my cue," said Jerrod as he jogged inside.
"Nothing is going on."
"Who are you talking to?"
"My best friend," stated Kassidy.
"Exactly. Now what is going on between you and Nick."
"Honestly just a friendship. What do you see?"
"I see a guy that seems attached to my best friend. I see my best friend who seems attached to a guy," said Michael.
"It will only be friendship," began Kassidy.
Kassidy told Michael all about the trip and getting off on the wrong foot with Nick. She explained about his girlfriend. She talked about how he seemed lost at times and very lonely. Kassidy also told her about
getting upset watching ER. Michael listened to it all.
"Well friend you two have a bond. It was clear he wanted to stay out here with you, but was too shy to do it."
"Ya think?"
"Yep. And I know you think he's special."
"How?"
"You're eyes light up when you are talking about him, but they also cloud over when you talk about the sad things in his life. You always feel the pain of those you care about."
"If truth be known, I care about all of them. Grace too. She is just the coolest."
"Yes she is. Let's go in and join them."
They found everyone gathered around the piano. Grace asked Kassidy to sing, but she refused. Michael asked them to follow her into the family room. Once in there, Michael put in the tape of her wedding. Kassidy tried to leave the room when she saw the tape, but Nick and AJ held her in place. Michael fast-forwarded until Kassidy appeared on the screen. The music started and she began to sing "The Lord's Prayer". Michael noted how Nick stared at the screen in concentration. He was really listening to
Kassidy sing. As the music swelled Kassidy's voice soared then gently ended the song. AJ and Grace complimented her and she blushed. Nick just stared at the image of her paused on the screen. Kassidy looked at her watch. It was time to go. AJ invited Michael and Jerrod to the show. Jerrod locked up the
house and he and Michael followed them to the arena.
Inside, Michael and Jerrod watched in amusement as Kassidy and Grace moved through everyone backstage. It reminded Michael of when they were in High School. Kassidy could go anywhere and blend in. They met everyone and were impressed with the guys. They thoroughly enjoyed the show.
After the show, Kassidy said goodbye to her friends and climbed on the bus. As the bus pulled onto the interstate, one thought went through her mind. In less than 72 hours it would all be over.
