Medina Valley 28 @ Southside 0
Express-News Coverage
We're 2 - 0 in district. This is the first time in three years any football team from Medina Valley has been able to claim that. And it feels good. Southside was a good team, and we showed that we are a solid team as well.

We rolled again on offense in the first half, scoring on our first two possesions. Trey finally caughta TDreception, so that's cool. Fitz rushed for over 150 yards and had two TDs. He fumbled twice, though, one time on the two yard line, but Blake picked it up and scored our last touchdown.

Defense recovered after a little scare in the first half. Soutside had two drives in the first half get iside the twenty five, but Meador came up with an interception on the first one and the Cardinals fumbled on the twenty- four yard line the second time. And the D totally dominated the second half.

It looks like it's going to come down to us and McCullum for the district title, and that should be a good game. But first we have to put Kennedy away.

Medina Valley rips Southside

Medina Valley cruised to a 28-0 District 28-4A victory over Southside on Friday night at Southside Stadium in the teams' first game against each other since 1989.

The Panthers went to 2-0 in district play with their fourth straight victory after three opening losses, and Southside fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in district.

Medina Valley's defensive effort stifled Southside's ground game, as the Redbirds got only 62 yards rushing and 56 passing for a total of 118 compared to the Panthers' 333 yards.

Another big factor was turnovers, with Medina Valley getting five, one of which set up a touchdown, and committing just two itself.

The Panthers got all they needed on their fourth play of the game when tailback Jon Fitzsimon blasted 31 yards up the middle for a touchdown just four minutes into the game. He started the 66-yard drive with a 27-yard run over the left side to the Southside 39. Michael Zinsmeyer kicked the first of four straight PATs.

Late in the first quarter, Medina Valley nose guard Nick Zinsmeyer recovered a fumbled punt return at the Cards' 46, which led to a five-play touchdown drive.

This time the Panthers went to the air, with quarterback Blake Weston finding wide receiver Trey Tschirhart in the right corner of the end zone for a 20-yard score with 32 seconds left in the opening stanza.

The rest of the half largely featured turnovers, with three interceptions in the last two minutes by Medina Valley free safety Derek Meador — his second of the game — Southside's Joseph Avila, and the Panthers' Michael Zinsmsyer.

Matt Crisp of Medina Valley and Southside's Avila also recovered fumbles in the period, the latter after a 49-yard bomb from Weston to Tschirhart put the Panthers on the Cardinals' 11.

Southside tried an unsuccessful onsides kickoff to start the second half and on the first play from scrimmage Fitzsimon again went up the middle for 58 yards and his second touchdown. He finished with 153 yards rushing on 20 carries.

Tschirhart caught five passes for 113 yards, the last one for 23 yards near the right sideline with a defender all over him, giving the Panthers first and goal at the 7 midway through the fourth period. Fitzsimon carried to the 2 and got the call again but fumbled. Weston picked it up and ran it in for the last touchdown.

Southside's deepest advance carried to the Medina Valley 20 in the first period before Meador ended the threat with an interception at the 6 and 14-yard runback. The Cardinals also fumbled the ball away after reaching the Panthers' 24 later in the second.

Medina Valley's defense held the Cardinals to just three first downs in the last half, two on penalties.
