The Day He Called My Name
~Beth Moore

*****************

Schedules to keep, people to meet,
it's a wonder I heard You at all.
Over city screams and midday dreams
prevailed Your whispering call.

For only a moment, too brief a moment,
you beckoned me up that hill.
Engagements were broken, apologies spoken,

"I've a divine appointment to fill!"

**********
I grabbed a canteen, threw a pack on my back,
fully stuffed with all I hold dear.
Then I heard You reply with a smile and a sigh,
"I don't think you ll be needing those here."

Piece by piece with sweet release
the load dropped at my feet.
With empty hands on foreign lands—
you chose that we would meet.

**********

My feet fell stock on a steady rock
and I began my anxious ascent.
The closer I came, the more I felt shame.
I feared Your swift relent.

Yet as I reached the top, knees only to drop,
you bathed me in glorious light.
My senses unhindered, eyes opened, heart tendered,

Oh, what a beautiful sight!

**********

"Just touch the blues, and smell the greens,
and warm yourself in yellows"
"Savor the still, or dance if you will,
in the shade of My umbrella!"

You spoke the Word like I've never heard,
my spirit expelled such surprise...
The You I had known, had been gently shown
was transfigured before my eyes!

"Oh, Sweet Lord," my heart adored,
"I beg You, please let me stay!"

"Come here, My child, let Me hold you awhile,
for you must return today."

**********

He extended His hand so that I'd gently land
on the path where I belong.
But refusing to retreat, I chose to leap
falling from a cliff head-long.

He heard me weep, set me on my feet
kissing elbows I'd skinned and burned.
Saying......

"
There's only one reason for your mountain top season—

Take to the valley all you have learned."

**********

"But the pain's too intense, the noise immense,
I'd rather be up where You are!"
"That's the captive's cry," my Lord replied.
"The lost are down where you are!"

"Don't despair, I'm as close as a prayer...
I'll always descend to you."
"Let's fellowship sweet ‘til your mansion's complete,
In the meantime, the mountains are few."

*****************

Though that time's come and gone,
and life just goes on,
I 'll never be quite the same
Since that day I remember,
when all else surrendered

... and Jehovah called out
my name.
