Wooten Harris was the third son of Isaac Harris of Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, Virginia. He was born in March 1759 and died February 11, 1840 in Hurricane Twp., Fayette County, Illinois. He married Frances Adams on January 6, 1784, in Rutherford County, North Carolina. She was born March 19, 1765, in Albermarle Parish, Sussex County, Virginia, the daughter of Benjamin Adams, Jr., and Frances Atkinson. The Adams family was living in Tryon County, North Carolina, before January 1, 1779. Tryon County, now extinct, is the parent County of Rutherford County, North Carolina. The year 1784 was an eventful one for Wooten Harris. He married Frances Adams in January, her father died in July, and their first child was born in November. We know Wooten returned to Brunswick County, Virginia, the following June long enough to be reimbursed for his gun that was taken by the militia, but apparently this was a short trip for he was living in Burke County, North Carolina in 1790. The area where he lived was just over the Rutherford County line into Burke County. In 1794, a group of settlers, including Wooten Harris, petitioned the Burke County General Assembly to add "that part of Burke County to Rutherford County that included the waters of 2nd Broad River and Conaways Creek" as it would be much closer to the county seat. Technically, Wooten's older children were born in Burke County, and the younger children were born in the same place, but by then it was in Rutherford County; however, it is customary to record a person's birth in the new county. Three of Wooten Harris's daughters married in Rutherford County. His oldest daughter, Martha "Patsy" Harris married John Angel on January 3, 1811; his second daughter, Elizabeth Harris, married Andrew Halford on January 15, 1812; and his third daughter, Frances Harris, married Jonathan Alexander Cook on December 25, 1811. Wooten Harris and family moved to Hickman County, Tennessee in 1818. Apparently, his son-in-law, Andy Halford, moved to Hickman County first, then the others followed. In 1819, Wayne County, was created out of the southern part of Hickman County. Thereafter, the Andy Halford and Jonathan Alexander Cook families were in Wayne County. It was in the late 1820's that the Wooten Harris family moved from Hickman County, Tennessee to Montgomery County, Illinois. The following is from a brief history of Wooten Harris published in the book Past and Present of Montgomery County, p 729: |
"About the year 1827 Wooten Harris, accompanied by his sons, Benjamin and William, emigrated from Hickman County, Tennessee to Montgomery County, Illinois. "The ancestors of Wooten Harris originally came from Wales and settled in Virginia. An elder son of Wooten, named Starling,
|
The names of the children of Wooten Harris and Frances Adams were on a register of their births included in his Revolutionary War pension records. They were submitted by his widow, Frances Harris, in order to obtain her widow's pension. Their children were all born in that part of Rutherford County, North Carolina that was part of Burke County before 1795. Unfortunately, Wooten Harris's Pension file at the United States National Archives was misplaced, lost, or stolen sometime between the 1960's and when all the files were microfilmed. At least his file was not microfilmed with all the others. Wooten Harris set aside part of his land for a cemetery. His land was located on the Montgomery County line bordering the land of his brother, Zachariah Harris, who lived in Hurricane Towmship, Fayette County, Illinois. The Harris Cemetery land was actually in Fayette County. It is located in the NW 1/4 of Section 19, South Hurricane Township about 1/2 mile from the Montgomery County line in Fayette County on a main north-south road. There is a bronze tablet placed in the cemetery by the D. A. R. for Wooten Harris which reads: "Wooten Harris, Virginia, Pvt., Col. Harrison's Regt. Revolutionary War, 1759-1840." |

Martha "Patty" Harris was born October 16, 1786, in that part of Burke County, North Carolina that became part of Rutherford County, after 1795. She married John Angel on January 3, 1811 in Rutherford County. He was born about 1786, and died in 1863 in Marion County, Arkansas. The information on this family was sent to me by Elizabeth Reynolds whose husband, Leo Reynolds, is a descendant of John Angel and Martha Harris. There is a record of four children for this couple. Their first three children were probably born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and the last was born in Hickman County, Tennessee. |

James Angel was born about 1813 probably in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Ward about 1832 in Hickman County, Tennessee. They had fifteen children. The Family Bible had been in the possession of their granddaughter, Jennie Jershua Frances Potter, daughter of Abner Wright Potter and Elizabeth Angel. She died in about 1853, then the Family Bible was found by other members of the family. It contained the names and birthdates of all their children. |

Elizabeth Harris was born November 14, 1788, in that part of Burke County, North Carolina, that became part of Rutherford County after 1795. She married Andrew "Andy" Halford, son of John Halford and Nancy Dalton, on January 15, 1812, in Rutherford County, North Carolina. They moved to Hickman County, Tennessee before 1818. Other members of the Harris family followed shortly afterwards. In 1819, Wayne County, was created out of the southern part of Hickman County. Thereafter, the Andy Halford and the Jonathan A. Cook families were in Wayne County. Andy and Elizabeth Halford's children, who were born before 1819, were technically born in Hickman County, while those born after 1819 were born in the new county of Wayne, even though they were living in the same place. Elizabeth's father, Wooten Harris, and some of her brothers' families moved to Illinois in about 1828, but the Andy Halford family was included in the Wayne County Tennessee census that year. They followed the others to Illinois later and were included in the Fayette County, Illinois census records in the years 1840 and 1850. Andy Halford's birthdate, May 12, 1787, was computed from his age at death. He died on April 18, 1861, at age 73 years 11 months and 6 days. Elizabeth died on June 17, 1855. They both died in Fayette County, Illinois, and were buried in the Harris Cemetery there. |
