History

The Guadalupe Moutains served the buffalo soldiers of the 1800's, and were one of the harshest areas to live in. Scarce water, Indian raids, and such, kept the area a frontier for many years. A mail station for the Butterfield Overland Mail System was built nearby to refresh horses and their masters. Known for having some of the best conditions on the route, many would fill up on food and water before heading out a few hours later.
