The junior trailed for every second but the final one against Strongsville’s Mike Saxton, before Mizer stuck Saxton with a double-leg takedown for the 2-1 triumph. “I saw there were nine seconds left, and I knew I had to try something,” Mizer said. “He was stopping everything, so I just had to shoot a double, and it came out exactly what I was looking for.” Straughn kept GlenOak’s Mike Abruzzi at bay in a 7-2 championship decision. The sophomore denied Abruzzi good shots and got in three of his own to repeat at district champion. Junior Kyle Johnson won four straight consolation matches after losing a 14-13 decision in his 135 opener before finishing fourth. Kyle Alessandro did the same thing, pinning in his must-win 135-pound consolation semifinal. Golden Eagles sophomore B.J. Boosz also grabbed fourth at 103. With five state qualifiers, GlenOak equaled district champion Perry’s total on the day. What gave the Panthers the district title was four district champions and Cory Nelson third at 152. That was enough for Perry to keep its district team title. The Panthers’ 149.5 points were enough to hold off Wadsworth, which had 125 points and three champions. Green’s Greg Gemmell also took third at 171.
