Furniture and antiques from this period are especially intriguing since their manufacture here on this continent
was founded on both old and new world traditions. Evolved side-by-side with imports from England and around the
world, the growth and development of local traditions sometimes show their origins in imported works. Here, the
craftsman himself sometimes made his tools from the raw materials taken from the landscape around him. Virgin timber,
home-made water-powered mills and high-carbon content iron used to fashion the tools of the trade all went into the
manufacture of fine furniture, often under what might amount to primitive conditions even for that period. Many
pieces were manufactured by known artisans working under recognized name-brands, but numerous others were pro-
duced out of shear neccessity on the very edges of the wilderness frontier itself in homesteader's workshops and
burgeoning settler-communities that grew from single-family homesteads.
