I built a new computer in summer of 2003, not with cutting edge parts or anything, but just something to use for the rest of high school. I also managed to save a ton over the retail price by building it. I highly recommend doing it yourself - I had no idea what I was doing and I managed to get it all up and running within two hours. Instead of paying Dell to build me the same computer for $2000, I spent about a fourth of that.
The picture on the right shows my old Dell (a PII 450MHz that I had been using up until February of 2003 - due for an upgrade, I think). I also added blue led fans that light up the window.

I also have an ipod KILLER - The Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen NX 20GB - it is a beautiful, beautiful thing. I'm not going to fully review it, but I can tell you, although it's a bit bulkier than the ipod, it's nearly half the price, and has superior sound quality. Instead of just mindlessly following the crowd, I suggest you check one of these out first. This player is about two years old. Now, Creative has a line of Zens that mimic ipod minis in different colors, but still have much better sound quality and are much less expensive.
