Tweety and Sylvester

Tweety, an innocent and lovable yellow canary is usually teamed up with his adoring caretaker, dear ol' Granny. As always, Tweety is the center of Granny's world. Unfortunately, Tweety's greatest adversary, Sylvester, would like to put an end to Tweety's world. In spite of it all, Tweety remains Granny's most adored and favored pet as well as her lucky charm. Tweety always remains calm in the face of danger and is able to keep Sylvester at arms length, outsmarting the foxy feline time after time. Tweety and Sylvester made their joint Warner Brothers debut on May 3, 1947 in "Tweety Pie".

One of the great characters created by the WB studio, Sylvester has demonstrated both a cunning evil streak and a sense of vulnerability. Like many studios, WB had had a long series of cartoons with cats chasing birds, mice or what have you, usually with a singular lack of success in catching their prey. The "Cagey Canary" is an outstanding example of a funny cat/canary cartoon in the pre-Sylvester era. Freleng and his staff designed Sylvester (not yet named) for the 1945 cartoon "Life With Feathers". With his big tomato nose, Sylvester was deliberately designed to evoke a clown-like image. Mel Blanc provided a sloppy voice that was very similar to his Daffy Duck voice, though not speeded. Sylvester would make two more solo appearances, in "Peck Up Your Troubles" and a brilliant bit in "Kitty Kornered", before the fatal collision with Tweety in Tweetie Pie, the first Oscar-winning cartoon for WB. From then on, Sylvester was used in a wide variety of series, principally the series opposite Speedy Gonzales, Tweety, and Hippety Hopper, though he did make an appearance in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon ("Crowing Pains"), made a few appearances as a timid sidekick to an utterly oblivious Porky Pig in a few great Chuck Jones shorts, and made one spectacular, out-of-character appearance in "The Scarlet Pumpernickel" as The Grand Duke.
