Creation: The first sections of current I-77 to open were the Wytheville Bypass and from Ft. Chiswell to the current I-77/81 split near Draper, in 1966. However, the map does not label it as I-77. The first dotted lines for independent I-77 were in 1967 (though still not labeled as anything).
Adjustments: In 1971 or 1972, I-77 opened from US 21, US 52, VA 42 Bland down to I-81.
In 1975, I-77 was extended north from Bland to West Virginia.
In 1977, I-77 opened between North Carolina and SR 775 (curr VA 148).
In 1978, I-77 was extended from SR 775 to VA 69.
In 1979, the segment from VA 69 to I-81 opened, completing all of I-77's independent routing.
The section east of Wytheville opened as an interstate in 1986.
Posting: Fully posted; error US 148/US 775 shields (photo courtesy Adam Prince) exist on NB ramp at exit 8.
Comments: Notable for the I-81 multiplex in Wytheville where the two Interstates are going in opposite directions. I-77 in Virginia is pretty scenic, with a mountain climb below Hillsville. I-77 has two tunnels, Walker Mountain near Bland and a tunnel at the West Virginia border.
I-77 would theoretically be multiplexed with I-74, should it ever be built in West Virginia.
The lowest F-route, F-001, is on I-77 in Bland County.
I-77 totally blows off US 52 (New River Bridge) and US 52 (north of Bland)
