Creation: The first pieces of I-95 to exist were: US 1 Woodbridge to the 14th St Bridge (had been built as VA 350 in the 40's-50's and the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike from I-85 to US 301-VA 2, completed in 1958. The 1959 Official Map is the first to label anything (Richmond-Petersburg Tpk) as I-95.
| Adjustments: In 1959 I-95 around Emporia was opened. In 1961, I-95 was done between US 301-VA 35-VA 156 north to the next US 301 exit. By 1962, I-95 was extended north to I-85 from that US 301 exit. In 1963, 2 sections were added: From Emporia south to NC, and from US 301-VA 2 Richmond north to VA 54 Hanover. In 1964, I-95 was completed from VA 54 to US 1 Massaponax and also from US 1 Woodbridge to VA 234 Dumfries. In 1965, I-95 was completed between Massaponax and Dumfries. In 1977, I-95 was rerouted in the Washington DC area. I-95 was given its current routing along the Beltway, replacing I-495 (which was added back on in 1993). The freeway through Arlington to the 14th St. Bridge became I-395. In 1981, I-95 was extended south from US 301-VA 35-VA 156 to SR 645 in Sussex County. This extension took away US 301 NB lanes. In 1982, the last piece between SR 645 and US 301 north of Emporia was completed. Some of this construction also took away US 301 NB lanes. Posting: Fully posted; mysteriously a really old-style (70's) shield was put up NB after VA 234 at the completion of the exit expansion there (removed 6 months later). The famous Miami, FL signs are at the I-295 interchange north of Richmond and just south of I-85. For some reason, the ones north of I-295 have the Miami, FL covered now. There are also Atlanta signs at the I-85 split. In the 80's, the exit and guide BGS's in the HOV lanes were black. They looked pretty cool if you ask me. Comment: As you travel I-95 in Virginia, you can experience the gradual transition from North to South. The northern part is characterized by the infamous Springfield beltway interchange, as well as the HOV lanes running down the center of the road. From Dave: I hate driving this segment as it seems to a very high moron ratio, even by northern VA standards. The choking traffic continues through Fredericksburg, but then gradually begins to taper down after that. South of Richmond/Petersburg, the transition is complete, as you're now traveling a fairly boring road with only the ubiquitous South of Border signs and Waffle Houses to break up the monotony. Only 489 miles to Florida..... As a commuter from Fredericksburg to Bethesda, MD, I can vouch for the validity of that assessment. I didn't verify this but surely it must be true: From 1977 until the exit renumbering in 1992, I-95 in Virginia had to be the only route in the country to use the same exit number three times in one state. You had Exit 2 (US 301 south of Emporia), Exit 2 (I-85) on the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike, and Exit 2 (VA 241) on the Capital Beltway; There was Exit 3 (US 58 Emporia), Exit 3 (Downtown Petersburg) on the Richmond-Petersburg Tpk., and Exit 3 (SR 613 Van Dorn St.) on the Capital Beltway; Finally, there was also Exit 4 (US 301 north of Emporia), Exit 4 (Colonial Heights), and Exit 4 (I-395/495) on the Capital Beltway. In recent years, I-95 has been largely reconstructed in northern VA, including the addition of center HOV lanes in the early 90's to Woodbridge and 1998 to Dumfries. This construction will continue with a massive reconfiguration of the 95/395/495 Springfield interchange (ahead of schedule!) and a new bridge across the Potomac. Creation: I-295 appeared as a dotted line between 1968-70, as a 3/4 beltway around Richmond. The first section to open was from I-64 Short Pump to US 60, VA 33, VA 156 Sandston in 1981.
| Adjustments: The dotted line was changed from beltway to include Petersburg bypassing in 1980. I-295 was extended south from Sandston to VA 5 in 1989. In 1991, I-295 was extended from VA 5 to VA 10, across the rather nifty James River Bridge. In 1992, I-295 was completed from VA 10 down to I-95. Posting: Fully posted; I-295 is mainly known for the famous Miami, FL exit sign on I-95 north of Richmond, now covered over. Between the I-64 exits, I-295 is often signed as TO I-64 and/or TO I-95 on BGS signs from cross routes. Comment: I-295 is Virginia's longest 3di. All of the exits are clovers except its two endpoints and newly opened VA 895 (which ends at I-295). I-295 is 8 lanes between I-95 and I-64 (the NE segment of the Richmond bypass), and is rarely crowded. I-295 is 6 lanes everywhere else north of VA 36 Hopewell. Creation: I-395 was created in 1977 as a renumbering of I-95. In earlier times this was VA 350.
| Adjustments: None Posting: Fully posted Comments: One of the more massive superhighways in the country. Includes a two-lane reversible HOV roadway in the median (which continues down I-95 to Dumfries), with attendant crossover ramps. Every interchange has a complexity of sorts, with the most spectacular being the interchange at the Pentagon which ties in VA 27, VA 110, and US 1 (and could also be defined to include the GW Pkwy. and Boundary Dr.). According to Scott Kozel's web site, this became the largest interchange complex in the world when it was rebuilt from earlier interchanges from 1970 to 1973. It may still be the largest in the world. I-395 is often the site of horrendous backups during rush hour. These generally occur in the non-HOV lanes, but a surreal sight occurred shortly after the blizzard of 1996 when the HOV lanes were stopped for miles, while the non-HOV lanes were completely empty! Creation: In 1962, I-495 was open from US 50 Merrifield to I-95/VA 350 (curr I-95,395) Springfield and from US 1 Alexandria across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

What can I say that hasn't been said before? Not a whole lot, except I'm glad I don't have to drive it during rush hour very often. The left lane merge to the northbound lanes from eastbound I-66 is always a fun experience, especially on a weeknight when I need to get off at the right-side VA 7 about a mile away. Well I commute 24 miles of the beltway everyday, with the morning a breeze and the afternoon a pain. I-495 totally blows off US 29/VA 237 and VA 400-90005. I-595 Proposed | |||
Previous I-595's: | I-595: Was proposed along a 1-mile section of US 1 in Crystal City. US 1 was supposed to be upgraded to Interstate standards, but instead became the semi-limited access highway which is there today. No I-595 signs were ever posted, although VDOT official state maps from 1972-76 label I-595 in the DC inset (the '72 and '73 maps show the GW Pkwy as I-595 in error). I believe the VDOT county atlas still had it in 1993. |

Previous I-895's: | I-895: Proposed number for the toll route (Pocahontas Pkwy) recently opened from jct. I-95/VA 150 to I-295 (mile 25). This route was once part of the planned I-295 before 295 was extended to Petersburg. I-895 was on VDOT official maps from 1996-2001, but when it was completed it became VA 895. |
