Creation: US 13 appeared in Virginia as an original US Highway in 1927. It was routed over VA 34 in its entirety from Cape Charles to Maryland near New Church. I have seen no evidence that original VA 34 or early versions of US 13 were assigned south of the Chesapeake Bay Ferry.
| Adjustments: In 1932, US 13 made a minor adjustment where Exmore to Painter became a direct connection. Until then, US 13 went Exmore to Belle Haven, then jogged east then north to Painter. The old alignment may have gone unnumbered after that, but today it is part of VA 178 and most of VA 181. US 13 was extended to exist south of the Chesapeake Bay Ferry between 1942-44, promoting the state highway extension of VA 13 to US 58-460 ALT Bowers Hill. US 13 followed Diamond Springs Rd. (curr secret VA 166) from Little Creek to today's Northampton Blvd. to Military Hwy to Bowers Hill. In 1951, Instead of going to Cape Charles from Eastville, US 13 went further south to where Kiptopeke State Park is, replacing part of VA 186. The stub to Cape Charles became US 13 ALT. Today that stub is VA 184. In 1952, US 13 was extended south again to its current NC border crossing: It was multiplexed with US 58-460 to Suffolk, then with part of VA 32, and it replaced all of VA 37 #4. In 1958, US 13 was rerouted within Suffolk to follow VA 337 from Downtown Suffolk east to Magnolia. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was completed in 1964, so US 13 was routed further south to Kiptopeke, leaving behind SR 704. In 1964, US 13 started utilizing Northampton Blvd, swapping alignments with VA 166 (which used mostly Shell Rd and Pleasure House Rd). In 1970, US 13 was placed onto I-64 from Northampton Blvd. to Bowers Hill. The Military Hwy alignment became US 13 Bus. In 1981 US 13 was put back onto Military Hwy. On March 19, 2003, US 13 was rerouted to go around the west side of Suffolk as new constructed freeway, although posting of the original Suffolk Bypass with US 13 shields took a couple months longer. Posting: Fully posted; A. Froehlig reports cutouts in Northampton County (SRs 620 and 617) were replaced early 2004; cutouts still exist in Eastville and Cheriton. As late as 1993 there were still a couple US 13 Bus signs on Military Hwy. Comment: A. Froehlig reports US 13 now (since mid-2004) has mile markers from the north end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (MM 70) to the Maryland State Line (MM 138). L. Corsaro and E. Smith have a US 13 expressway site From Dave: The main drag of the Delmarva Peninsula, which I became familiar with as a child on my family's biannual trips to my great aunt's home in Jarvisburg, NC. Highlights include: one of my favorite town names - Mappsville, Owl Restaurant in Accomac, and, of course, the famous Bridge-Tunnel. I would like to add Formy's Restaurant (BBQ) in Painter...US 13 is multilane throughout except for below VA 32 and the tunnels under Chesapeake Bay. The bridge portions on the bay are now twin spans that have merges at the tunnel entrances. The eastern Shore portion was about half upgraded to 4-lane by 1953. |

Previous US 13 ALT's: | US 13 ALT #1: Appeared in 1951 as a renumbering of mainline US 13 from Eastville to Cape Charles. After US 13 was routed to catch the ferry to Norfolk further south, there was still a ferry from Cape Charles to Old Point Comfort (Hampton). This ferry was gone by 1956, though US 13 ALT was still there. US 13 ALT was renumbered as VA 184 in 1958. US 13 ALT #2: Appears in March 1958 CTB Minutes as a proposal by City of Hampton and endorsed by a member of the CTB to establish this to run from Old Point Comfort (via Ferry from Kiptopeke - there were 2 ferries from Kiptopeke then) over US 258 to Benns Church, then down VA 10 to meet US 13 again in Suffolk. Further study determined that this designation was unwise due to a second toll at James River Bridge and the route would be mostly 2-lane. |
