US 25E  Decommissioned
Previous US 25E's: US 25E: Appeared in Virginia as an original US route in 1927. It ran through the western tip of Virginia at Cumberland Gap for about 1.5 miles between Kentucky and Tennessee. From Kentucky US 25E was paired with VA 10. From Tennessee, US 25E was paired with VA 107. VA 10 split east from the middle (curr US 58). VA 10 and VA 107 disappeared from US 25E in 1929. As you would expect, a route 1.5 miles long cannot undergo many changes, but in 1996, US 25E was sent through a tunnel, bypassing the tip of Virginia. US 25E from US 58 to Tennessee became part of an extended US 58. From US 58 to Kentucky is now National Park Service territory. US 25E should really be just US 25, as US 25W has little importance anymore and is multiplexed a good bit as well.   For photographs and other information about Cumberland Gap, see this site by R.V. Droz.
