 Creation: US 522 appeared in Virginia in 1941, pretty much as it does now. US 522 replaced VA 7 from WV to Winchester, VA 3 from Winchester to Sperryville, was multiplexed with VA 3 from Sperryville to Culpeper, and replaced VA 49 from Culpeper to Powhatan.
Adjustments: The VA 3 multiplex was removed between 1945-47.
US 522 was given a much more direct alignment between VA 20 and VA 208 between 1948 and 1950, leaving behind SR 719.

NOTE: US 522 Business in Washington, VA is NOT posted at all - only US 211 Business signs exist. Error VA 522 cutout existed just north of VA 37 until 1995.
Comments: The US 522 Business is identified on DeLorme Gazateers and on VDOT route log. US 522 is shown as VA 522 on the 1941-42 Official Map. US 522 is not generally a through route except north of Winchester. It is rather narrow and curvy between US 60 and Mineral. A US highway that's "just kind of there".
