Centifolia roses are reputed to originate in Holland about 300 years ago, where 200 hybrids were bred in less than 200 years. Once believed to be a very ancient species, modern genetic research has proven the class to be a result of hybridizing between R. gallica, R. phoenicia, R. moschata, R. canina, and R. damascena. The roses are once blooming and generally very fragrant. Foliage is coarse and dark green. Plants are thorny and can be prone to mildew. Many benefit from support for the plant.
