Lesson 17: Choosing a Magickal Name

Writen by Isa Moon

Chosing your name can be the easiest or hardest thing you do. How do you choose it? Well, that I can’t do for you but I can give you some ideas.

1. My name, Isa, comes from the Egyption Goddess, Isis. I use the Egyption path as my base, though I do not limit myself to it. My surname, Moon, is also from the Goddess; the moon often symbolizes the Goddess. So see if there are any names in your path or tradition that you like, they can always be modified to suit your personality better.

2. One of my dear friend’s name came from a short story she had writen years before. It was something that she just made-up. Be creative and use your imagination.

3. My next friend came about his name by combining his animal totem and an old term that he thought fit him. Incoorporate what and who you are into your name.

4. My last two friends, well, they had the hardest time of all of us trying to find a name. Nothing seemed to click or feel right so we went out and bought a book of baby names at the check-out counter of the grocery store. It was just a small book, nothing too fancy but they were able to look up the meaning and origin of the name. They chose names that had meanings and origins that suited their paths/traditions. When all else fails, look in a book. There is a wonderful book on Pagan names available at most occult shops. (Sorry, don’t remember the name.)

The main thing is to chose something that you like, if not love. Some people chose two names, a public name and a private one. The private name is never spoken to anyone but the Lord and Lady.
