WESTFALL GENEALOGY

My Westfall Ancestors

My first recorded Westfall ancestor was Jurian Westfall who came to America in 1642. On August 4, 1642 my ancestor Jurian Westfall (Juriaen Van Westphalen) arrived in New Amsterdam, New York aboard a ship called "The Houttuyn" from Luyderdorp, Holland. He was only 13 at the time. His family had migrated to Holland from Westphalia in Germany in the 1600's. It is not known whether his parents died in Holland or enroute, or he came with other relatives.

I will start with my most recent Westfall ancestors and trace back to Jurian.

(1.) My father Walter Edward (everyone called him Ed) Westfall was born 4-4-1897 in Jersey County, IL, and he died 3-17-1977 in Illini Cummunity Hospital in Pittsfield, Pike County, IL. He was the son of Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Frances (McCaulley) Westfall. He was a farmer. He was in the Military Service in the U. S. Army and was a World War I Veteran. He married my mother Lovie Katherine Kraushaar 2-26-1921 in Alton, IL. Lovie was born 2-10-1904 on a farm near Fieldon, IL. She died 3-19-1995 at the Clarkston Court Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Pike County, IL. She was the daughter of Charles and Caroline (Haushalter) Kraushaar. My mother's grandparents came from Germany in the mid 1800's. My parents are buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery 4 miles West of Jerseyville, Illinois on State Rte 16 in English Township. My parents had 2 children --my sister Mildred Westfall and myself Walter Westfall.

(2.) My grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall was born 2-25-1857 near Roanoke, Lewis County, West Virginia and he died 12-9-1934 at his residence on his farm near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL. He was the son of Emanuel and Hannah (Kelley) Westfall. Jasper Mifflin Westfall married his first wife Mary Jane Shannon in 1878 in Bloomington, McLean County, IL. She was born 3-6-1859 in Licking Co., Ohio, and died 1-18-1940 in Alton, Madison Co., IL. She was the daughter of Abraham (9-20-1830 to 11-6-1903) and Amanda (Elban) Shannon (8-2-1840 to 1896). Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his 1st wife Mary Jane Shannon divorced and he married 2nd Frances McCaulley in 1893 in West Virginia. She was born 11-16-1869 in West Virginia and died 1-18-1936 at her residence on her farm near Fieldon, Jersey County, IL.

Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his 1st wife Mary Jane Shannon had 6 daughters-Marietta Westfall, Stella Magarite Westfall, Mamie Westfall, Nora Westfall, Grace Westfall, and Eva May Westfall.

Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his 2nd wife Frances McCaulley had 4 sons--my father Walter Edward Westfall, Alonzo (Lonnie) Westfall, Jasper Westfall, and Floyd Westfall, and 2 daughters--Laura Westfall, and Anna Westfall.

(3.) My great grandfather Emanuel Westfall was born in 1828 in Virginia and died in 1863 in Roane County, West Virginia. He was killed while plowing during the Civil War. He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Runyon (Smith) Westfall. He was married to Hannah Kelley in 1856. She was born in 1837 in W. Virginia, the daughter of William and Sarah (Bice) Kelley. She died in 1918 in Gibson City, IL. They had 2 children--my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Emanuel Westfall Jr.

Note: There is some uncertainty about who was the father of my ancestor Jacob C. Westfall. There are some who think one of the brothers of Cornelius Westfall Jr, either John Westfall or Zachariah Westfall, might actually have been the father of my ancestor Jacob C. Westfall. They were also the sons of Cornelius Westfall Sr. and Elizabeth Westfall.

I will now provide some additional information about my father Walter Edward Westfall and his family.

My father's father, my grandfather, was Jasper Mifflin Westfall who was born near Roanoke in Lewis County West Virginia in 1857. He died on his farm near Fieldon in Jersey County Illinois in 1934. He was the son of Emanuel (1828-1863) and Hannah Kelley Westfall (1837-1918). His father Emanuel Westfall was killed while plowing during the Civil War in 1863 in West Virginia, the year West Virginia split off and became a separate state.

After my great grandfather's death his wife Hannah Kelley Westfall, moved with her 2 sons (my grandfather Jasper who was only 6 and his one year old brother Emanuel Jr.) to Bloomington, IL. She may have had relatives in the area.

In 1878 at the age of 21 my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall married his first wife Mary Jane Shannon. That same year they moved with her parents accompanying to near Coyville, Kansas. It was near the Oklahoma line. He farmed near Coyville, Kansas in the 1880's when he was married to his first wife Mary Jane Shannon. They had 6 daughters-Eva, Nora, Stella, Mamie, Grace, and Marietta who died when a baby

It was said my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall once went on a cattle drive on the Chisholm Trail. An old family story was that Jesse James once stayed at my grandfather's farm when he was wounded and later came back with a cow and gave the family the cow for helping him. Also it was said my grandfather sometimes wore 2 pearl handled long barreled 44 caliber revolvers in those days.

In about 1886 he and his family went with a team of oxen pulling his wagon from Kansas to W. Virginia where he was born. He lived near Reedyville (now Reedy), W. Virginia in Roane County. At least two of his uncles lived there at the time, and an aunt Merinda sister to his father, having moved there from Lewis County W. Virginia. There in about 1893 after divorcing his first wife Mary Jane Shannon, he met and married my father's mother and my grandmother Frances McCaulley. Shortly after their marriage they then left West Virginia and settled in the Jersey County, IL area about 1893. When my grandfather, Jasper Mifflin Westfall first moved to Jersey County, Illinois, he and his 2nd wife Frances (McCaulley) Westfall (my grandmother) lived in a rented farmhouse near McClusky south of Jerseyville where he worked for the Dabbs family who owned farms in that area. My uncle Lon was born there in the McClusky area in 1895 and my father in 1897. In the meantime my grandfather bought the farm south of Fieldon, Illinois in Otter Creek Township by the Democrat Spring. The farm did not have a house or any other buildings on it at the time he bought the farm sometime between 1893 when he moved to Jersey County and 1899. He was a very skilled carpenter and built the house and a barn himself, and the family moved to the farm and into the house in 1899. Aunt Laura was born there in 1899 in the house on the farm south of Fieldon and aunt Anna was born there in 1904. Uncle Jasper "Jap" was born there in 1907 and Uncle Floyd was born there in 1914.

My father said his father was a stern disciplinarian and once whipped him with a blacksnake whip until his back was bloody because he had disobeyed him. He said his father was a big man and his mother was small woman with red hair. He said his father planted an apple orchard of Ben Davis apple trees on the hill above the farmhouse and had a large grape arbor over by the spring. He farmed about 300 acres at one time. My father and his brother Lonnie worked in the field at a young age.

In later years his father sold off most his land. He died in 1934 on the farm after several years of stomach problems. The doctor thought he might have had cancer. My grandmother died just a year later. In January of 1936 she went out barefooted in the middle of the night to put some straw in a pen for a sow with some little pigs and died several days later with Pneumonia. My father's parents are buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery 4 miles West of Jerseyville, Illinois on State Rte 16.
