A U.S. Coast Guard World War II veteran, he owned and operated Foster Auto Sales and Repair for 54 years, retiring in 1984, and was a Studebaker and Nash car dealer from 1939 to 1959 in Jerseyville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, I.O.O.F. No. 53 and American Legion Post No. 492, all in Jerseyville and was a Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster in 1948, the American Red Cross director from 1942 to 1960 and World War II commander of civilian defense. He married the former Blanche Dierking June 27, 1931, in Alton. She died July 3, 1988. She was the daughter of Frederic "Fred" Wieneke (1850-1930) and Johannah C. "Anna" Quitt (1859-1927). "Lena" married 1st John Freand, a dredge boat engineer, about 1908. They were the parents of 3 children, but later divorced. Children from her first marriage to John M. Freand were-Walter Charles Freand (1909-1971), Matilda Marie "Tillie" Freand Willenburg, and Otto Fred "Bud" Freand (1912-1998). Lena's second husband was August Nolte (1873-1959). They married before 1920. They had no children. Lena died the day before her 52nd birthday. She was survived by her second husband, August, who passed away in 1959. He was the son of Karl F. "Charles" Nolte (1836-1910) and Johannah "Hannah" Brinkmann (1849-1915). August was born near Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois. He was a farmer and life-long resident of the area. August married Anna Catherine Louise (Nolte) Nolle Pell (1880-1928), Annie Nolle on 03 Nov 1898 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were divorced before 1910. Children from first marriage: None. August then married Caroline Agnes "Lena" Wieneke before 1920. She was the mother of 3 children--Walter, Tillie and Bud--from her first marriage to John Freand. Lena died in 1938. Due to declining health in his later years, August was a patient at a nursing home for some time before he was taken to Jersey Community Hospital. At the time of his death there, August was 86 years, 3 months and 27 days old. He was survived by 1 brother, Henry Nolte; and 1 sister, Mollie Gose. Both of August's siblings resided in Golden Eagle. She suffered a severe stroke in 1991 and then lived at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home for several years. At the time of her death at the nursing home, Oleta was 82 years, 5 months and 20 days old. He was the oldest son of Walter Freand and Oleta Meseke, Dale married Bernice Dillon on 20 Feb 1965 in St. Charles, Missouri. She had 1 daughter from a previous marriage. Dale was a cement truck driver, and Bernice worked as an electrician at McDonnell Douglas Corporation (later taken over by Boeing) in St. Charles County. Dale battled cancer and heart disease for several years. At the time of his death, he was 60 years, 11 months and 7 days old. Dale was buried on 18 Oct 1997 and was survived by his wife, 2 younger brothers and a step-daughter. Also surviving were several aunts and uncles, as well as 8 cousins. ------------- (2aa) Walter Charles Freand and Oleta Dorothy (Meseke) Freand's son Lonnie Lamont Freand's obituary - Lonnie Lamont Freand was born Nov. 4, 1949 in Spankey, Jersey County, Illinois, and died Aug. 3, 1998 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois. He was the youngest son of Walter Freand and Oleta Meseke, Lonnie married Linda J. Bequeaith on 10 Apr 1971 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois. They were the parents of 2 children. Lonnie was a MOPAR enthusiast. He enjoyed collecting and working on old cars with his son. A skilled musician who loved to play guitar and sing, Lonnie shared his musical talents with the residents at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton during volunteer visits several times a month. Lonnie worked at Tenneco, a plastic manufacturer, for more than 27 years. He was involved in the Plant Emergency Organization and the Fire Brigade. Lonnie suffered a heart attack at work and was rushed to Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois where he died at the age of 48 years, 8 months and 30 days. He was survived by his wife, 2 children and 1 brother. Also surviving were several aunts and uncles, as well as 8 cousins. ------------ Lonnie Lamont Freand's wife Linda Joyce (Bequeaith) Freand DaValbiss's obituary - Linda Joyce Freand DaValbiss, 66, of White Hall, died Sept. 18, 2018 at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was born Jan. 8, 1952 in White Hall, the daughter of the late Junior and Doris Slack Bequeaith. She married Lonnie L. Freand on April 10, 1971 in Carrollton and he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1998. She later married Ronald DaValbiss and he preceded her in death, Jan. 12, 2016. Surviving are a son, Tim (Lynnette) Freand of White Hall; a daughter, Krista Jones of O'Fallon; four grandchildren, Dennis Freand, Carmen Inman, Troy Brincks, and Austin Plymell; one great-granddaughter, Chloe Flagg; and a sister, Kathy Robinson of Meredosia. She was preceded in death by a great grandson, Keegan Inman. Linda was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton. She worked as a Certified Nurses Aid at the White Hall Hospital, Passavant Hospital, and Scott County Nursing Center. In her more recent years she enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center in Carrollton, and at the White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center helping with activities and crafts. She was a very creative person and loved shopping. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall, with burial at the White Hall Cemetery. A retired farmer, he was a member of St Matthews Lutheran Church of Brussels and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Batchtown. Born December 28, 1912 in Rosedale, he was a son of the late John and Caroline Wieneke Freand. He married the former Velma M. Zimmerman on Aug. 3, 1937 in St. Louis. She died May 12, 1991. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Mary Freand of Jerseyville; three daughters and two son-in-laws, Gloria and William Ohlendorf of Jerseyville, Sonja and Alan Helm of Holts Summit, MO, and Troby Freand of Chesterfield; two grandsons Mark Ohlendorf of Brussels and Clay and his wife Rita Ohlendorf of Golden Eagle; two great grandchildren Ashley and Mitchell Ohlendorf; and a great great grandson John Ohlendorf. He was the son of John Freand and Caroline Wieneke, Bud married Velma M. "Toots" Zimmerman on 03 Aug 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 4 children. Bud was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels and former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Batchtown. Bud suffered from declining health for some time during his later years. She was the daughter of Walter Zimmerman and Bertha Willenburg, "Toots" was baptized 12 Oct 1919 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois. Toots married Otto "Bud" Freand on 03 Aug 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 4 children. Toots was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Batchtown. She served as the treasurer for the Search Light Circle, also in Batchtown. At the time of her death at St. Anthony's Hospital, Toots was 72 years, 8 months and 29 days old. She was survived by her husband, Bud; 3 daughters; 1 son, Troy; 2 grandsons; 1 step-great-grandchild; and 2 brothers, Leo Zimmerman of St. Louis, Missouri, and Paul Zimmerman of Jacksonville, Florida. Toots' husband, Bud, passed away in 1998 and was buried next to her. --------------- (1aa) Otto Fred "Bud" Freand's and Velma Marie "Toots" (Zimmerman) Freand's son Troy Lyle Freand's obituary - Troy Lyle Freand, 63, died at 5:20 a.m., Saturday, May 7, 2011 at his residence from complications from battling lung cancer. He had fought a good fight, and had tried very hard to beat the cancer, but the Lord decided he had done his best, and it was now time to rest. He was born on the family farm in Brussels on March 23, 1948, the only son of four children born to the late Otto "Bud" and Velma "Toots" (Zimmerman) Devine. He grew up in Brussels, and farming became a part of his life early on. He graduated from Brussels Community High School in 1967, where he was played the center position on the basketball team. After high school, he enrolled in a diesel engineering school in Nashville, Tn. A U.S. Army veteran, he volunteered to serve in Vietman during the war, and after his honorable discharge he returned to Calhoun County, and began farming once again alonside his father in the Brussels area. Her brother, Gary, and his wife, Kimberly, and their two sons, were at her bedside at the time of her passing. Mary was born on Oct. 9, 1949, in Alton, and was the second child and daughter born to Hubert and Margaret (Held) Devine. She was raised in Brussels and worked alongside her parents, who operated the local "Devine Store," selling groceries to the families in the area. She graduated from Brussels Community High School in 1967, and the went on to graduate from the Gradwohl School of Laboratory Technique in 1968 as a Registered Medical Technologist. Mary shared her knowledge and her compassionate skills as a Med Tech at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton for 44 years, prior to her retirement in October 2012. It was more than just a job to Mary, as she became friends with many co-workers and patients through the years, as evidenced by the many visitors she had come through during her final illness. On April 8, 1972, she married the love of her life and fellow "Raider" classmate, Troy L. Freand, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels, and shared 39 wonderful, blissful years together before his death on May 7, 2011. Most of their married life was spent in Brussels, until choosing to move to Jerseyville in 1992. She was currently a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and was a member of the local Dominoes Club. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, as well as her brother and his family. Due to her illness, they had to cancel a trip that was planned to tour Iceland. A fun loving spirited woman, she was adored and loved by anyone who came into contact with her. She faced her final illness with courage and laughter and continued to be a constant joy to be around. Mary is survived by her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Kimberly Devine of Fieldon, along with their two sons and special nephews, Mitchell Devine of Fieldon and Travis Devine and his wife, Ashley of Jerseyville, and their two sons, Cleighton and Kaleb. They brought her many hours of joy and laughter and were told many times by Mary that they were the "light of her life." Pruitt on April 29, 1942, in St. Charles, Missouri, and together they raised five children and shared 35 years together before his death on Dec. 19, 1977. She then went on to attend Benton's School of Cosmetologv in Alton, and began working as a stylist in the salon at JC Penney in Alton. Nearly a year later in 1981, Connie was involved in a tragic automobile accident on her way to work, and was unable to resume her career that she so desired. In spite of her intense pain, Connie never worried about herself. She tirelessly made sure that those around her were happy and she made her home one of peace and happiness. She loved to read and shop when she could, and treasured her time and felt blessed that she could be with her family.
