WESTFALL GENEALOGY Related Families-Page 2c (Groppel) Herman H. Groppel Herman Groppel, a native of Prussia, was born on the 13th day of April 1827. He is the son of Herman and Charlotta (Speckman) Groppel. In fall of 1840 his father died, and his mother four years later. Herman was the third in a family of seven children, consisting of three boys and four girls. He spent his youth on a farm in his native country. He served in the Prussian army one year, and then returned to farm life. In 1853 Herman took passage on a vessel bound from Bremen to New Orleans, where he arrived after a voyage of nine weeks. From there he came up the Mississippi river to St. Louis, staying there until May of the following year, when he went up the Missouri river to Lexington and engaged in farming for two years. From there he came to Jersey county, Ill. and bought 40 aces of land on section 22 in Richwoods township, on which he moved. On the 10th of April 1858 he was married to Augusta Rudolph, a native of Prussia, and daughter of Daniel and Francisca (Lohmueller) Rudolph. Seven children were born to them: Fred, married to Lena Arbogast, living near Otterville; Edward, married to Lena Egelhoff, also living near Otterville; Lena, Henry, Willie, Theodore and Louis. Mr. Groppel and family are members of the Lutheran church. She was born in 1873 near Fieldon, Richwood Township, Jersey County, Illinois, and died in 1947 in St. Louis, MO. She was the daughter of George and Margaret (Schiller) Haushalter. They had 3 daughters-Augusta (Gussie) Groppel born in 1892 in Jersey County, IL, and died in in 1981 in Jersey County, IL, and Margaret Catherine Groppel (Maggie) (twin to Gussie)-(Maggie died 9-14-1906 at age 15 of consumption in Jersey County, IL). Henry and Katherine (Haushalter) Groppel had another daughter Frances Matilda Groppel born 10-16-1896 Jersey County, IL, and died 9-4-1970 in Jersey County, IL. After her first husband Henry D. Groppel died Katherine married Phillip Horn 3-16-1901 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, IL, and they had 2 sons-Arthur Horn and Phillip Horn. After their marriage Frances and John Wachter and their daughter Loretta lived in East St. Louis, IL a block from Frances's mother Katherine. Frances's first husband John Wachter was in a car accident, and later became insane and was hospitalized in a mental institution in Alton, IL where he later died. John and Frances (Groppel) Wachter's daughter Loretta Wachter married 1st a man whose last name was Tucker and they had 2 sons, James Tucker and Eugene Tucker. Loretta married 2nd Keith G. Martin Apr. 21, 1945 in Jersey County, IL, and they had a daughter, Kathleen Joann Martin. They lived in Springfield, IL. Kathleen was born on November 30, 1953 in Alton, the daughter of Keith and Loretta Wachter Martin. She married Michael Edward Fifer in 2006 in Springfield; he preceded her in death on January 28, 2013. Kathleen attended Southeast High School and volunteered at the breadline. She was known for her very caring spirit and always put everyone else first. She had many pen pals and enjoyed drawing and reading. She was also preceded in death by her parents. August Groppel's obituary - August Groppel, 25, of Fieldon, was buried in Gunterman cemetery. Service at Fieldon Evangelical church with Rev C H Kuhlman of Collinsville officiating. He had resided with his mother Mrs Mary M Groppel and his sister, Mrs Freda O'donnell and brother, Charles Groppel, on the Groppel farm, 3 miles west of Fieldon. His unexplained suicide occurred Thursday afternoon after he had taken members of the family to the home of the late Mrs Marie Katherine Andris, a neighbor, whose funeral was held in the Fieldon Evangelical church. While descending a hill near the Andris home a front wheel of the car he was driving struck a stump at the edge of the road, disabling the machine. Groppel's mother and sister continued to the church with friends, while Groppel returned afoot to his home, ostensibly to obtain repairs for the car. Relatives state that the accident apparently disturbed him, but was not regarded as cause for the violent act he committed. Had left clothes piled on the dining room table, wrote a note, which was also left in plain view on the table, direction the family to where his body could be found. The body was found near a branch a short distance from the barn. One charge from an automatic gun found. Inquest was held. She was a native and lifelong resident of Illinois and was moved to Idaho after surviving a stroke in May of 2003. A stroke survivor again on December 17, 2008, Marcella tried until the very end of her life to make the best of her limitations. She was a strong person and a loving mother and wife. Born May 13, 1929 in Jerseyville, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late William and Tossie Mason Graner. Marcella was the last surviving child of eight that were born to them. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ralph whom she married on June 11, 1947 and an infant daughter, Darlene. Her surviving children are a daughter, Carol Brim and her husband Tim of Nampa, ID and a son, Dennis and Lupe Isringhausen of Loveland, CO. Ralph and Marcella farmed in Jerseyville, IL until 1961 when they moved to Greenfield, IL where they also farmed. Marcella was a homemaker until 1979 when they gave up farming and moved into town. At that time, Mom became a "liberated woman" and started working outside the home for the first time in her married life. She spent the next 25 years as a nurse's aid, providing loving care for patients in a nursing home in Greenfield and then later in Jacksonville, IL. Mom loved taking care of people and making sure they were comfortable so it's no surprise that she was so appreciative of the care she got at Nampa Care Center for the last 6+ years. The caregivers loved mom and told me so often about how much they enjoyed her sense of humor. (Isringhausen) Beiermann's obituary - Alberta L. Beiermann, 92, died at 11:26 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Willow Rose Nursing and Rehab Center. Born Jan. 18, 1919, in Fieldon, she was the daughter of Alfred and Caroline (Groppel) Isringhausen, now deceased. She married Paul Beiermann Aug. 12, 1944, in Jerseyville. He died Oct. 18, 1975. A homemaker, she was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Jersey County Home Extension and Women of the Moose. Survivors include a daughter, Jane P. Beiermann of Jerseyville; a son, Gary A. Beiermann of Jerseyville; grandchildren, Rebecca Lane and Timothy A. Beiermann; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Hilda Fowler of Jerseyville; two brothers, James Isringhausen of Jerseyville and Leonard Isringhausen of Redding, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lawrence, Ernest and Ralph Isringhausen; and sister, Bernice Bean. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The Rev. Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ------------- (3aa) Alfred & Caroline (Groppel) Isringhausen's son James Frederick “Jim” Isringhausen's obituary - James Frederick “Jim” Isringhausen, 92, died at 9:40 p.m., Monday, September 2, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. Jim was born in Nutwood on January 14, 1921, one of eight children born to the late Alfred & Caroline (Groppel) Isringhausen. At the age of 19, Jim left the family home and moved to Alton where he began working at Owen’s Illinois before enlisting with the US Navy where he served his country honorably during World War II, where he was a gunner on troop transport in Normandy. After returning from service, Jim resumed working at Owen’s Illinois and continued what would be 41 years as a dedicated employee in both the Wood Box and Shipping Departments, retiring in 1983. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 492 and a passionate animal lover. He married the former Madonna Schlueter on July 1, 1950 in St. Louis, MO and the two resided in Alton before moving to Delhi in 1957 where they shared in the joys of raising two daughters and nearly 33 years of marriage before her death on February 14, 1983. Surviving are a daughter Pat Isringhausen of New Delhi; a grandson Jeremy & Stephanie Duran of Oregon, OH; two great-grandchildren, Michael & Lydia Duran; a brother, Leonard Isringhausen of Redding, CA and a sister Hilda Fowler of Jerseyville; along with numerous nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends. She was born in Nutwood on June 25, 1933, one of eight children born to the late Alfred and Caroline (Groppel) Isringhausen. She worked tirelessly as a Home Health Aide in the area; sharing her love and compassion with those in need. Hilda enjoyed bowling, playing cards and dominos; was a former Women of the Moose member. She built her life around the pillars of Faith and Family. She had strong family values and relished in the time spent with her family, spoiling her grandchildren and grandpets. She was a longtime and devout member of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, where she served for a period of time as Deaconess. Surviving are a son, David Fowler of Charlotte, NC; a daughter and son in-law, Susan and Dean Long of Jerseyville; four grandchildren, Jerika (Jimmy) White of Franklin; Trent Long of Jerseyville; Chris (Caroll) Long of Carbondale and Mike (Julia) Long of Cobden; six great-grandchildren, Kinley and Kaliah White; Daniela and David Long; Amelia and Clara Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Cardwell; five brothers, Ernest, Ralph, Lawrence, James and Leonard Isringhausen; as well as two sisters, Berenice Bean and Alberta Beiermann. A drive-thru visitation will be held on Monday, June 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Private funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. He was the son of John and Elise (Haller) Isringhausen. ----------------- (1aa) Frederick "Fritz" and Mary Magdalene (Groppel) Isringhausen's son Arthur John Isringhausen's obituary - Arthur John Isringhausen, 91, died at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at his residence. He was born June 18, 1918, in Nutwood, the son of the late Fredrick "Fritz" and Mary Magdalene (Groppel) Isringhausen. He first married the former Mary Margaret Ballard on Dec. 23, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo. Together they were the loving parents of two daughters, Alvina Rose and Bette Ruth, and shared almost 44 years together before her death on May 27, 1983. He then married Jean on May 10, 1985, at the Fieldon United Church of Christ and they have been blessed with 24 years together. Arthur was the founder of Federal Steel and Supply located on Old St. Louis Road in East Alton. He was president of the company for 40 years before retiring in 1983, however mainted the vice presidency until 2006. He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II as the Germany Plant Engineer and two years during the Korean War. He particpated in building the first communication tower between Europe and Washington, DC during his time in World War II. He is a charter member of the Eagles Lodge 2747 in Jerseyville, and was a member of the American Legion where he has served as commander, president of the Memorial Association Board for over 40 years, and president of the executive board since its inception. He was also a member of the VFW, Masonic Lodge, and the former Moose Lodge, all of Jerseyville. Art currently owned a farm in Jersey County and continued to assist in its operation. He has been a lifetime member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ, serving on the church council for 12 years and on the building and grounds committee. The Family Life Center of the Fieldon United Church of Christ was a longtime dream of Arthur's. He felt the children of the Fieldon community and surrounding areas needed a place to go and play instead of in the streets. The first thoughts were of a playground but after many converstions with other church members it was decided that a building would be more appropriate. With that idea, help, hard work and dedication, along with donations from many, the dream of the Family Life Center became a reality. He also had a passion of hunting and fishing, which took him to the Colorado Mountains, hunting for deer and elk in Wyoming, and moose hunting in Alaska. He was part owner of the Ute Uela lead mine in Lake City, Colo. for several years and enjoyed spending time in that area. He and his wife, Jean, went on a couple adventure trips to Alaska, later purchasing a camper in which they enjoyed many trips to various locations throught the United States, where the enjoyed many new friendships along the way. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1972. She retired as a cook at Jersey Community Hospital. She worked hard all her life and was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville. She loved to play dominoes with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved to quilt, do crafts, and was an avid Cardinals fan. She made homemade Christmas ornaments for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She was a noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge #263 in Jerseyville and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville by participating with the quilting lady's and the Bazaar. Gertie had 122 descendants, and 117 are still living. Isringhausen on April 18, 1975, at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville and together they have shared the past 35 years together. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting, whether it was deer, turkey or morel mushrooms, but nothing compared to his grandkids. Hagen died at Camp Custer, Mich., Saturday, October 12, 1918, at the age of 25 years, 4 months, and 26 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Hagen, who reside in Fieldon vicinity. He married Margaret Arbogast on Apr 20, 1921, in Alton, Madison Co., IL. They met when she was working in the Cunningham's apple orchard, sorting apples. She was born in Jerseyville on Sept. 7, 1937, the only child born to Leonard and Bertha (Egelhoff) Willman. She grew up in rural Jerseyville, and graduated with the Class of 1955 from Jersey Community High School. She was a homemaker, and was known to be one of the best cooks around. She was a devoted wife and mother of farmers, and could always be counted on to prepare a huge noon meal for her husband, sons, and farm hands. She enjoyed being outdoors, tending to her yard and her vegetable garden that she had every year. She is survived by her husband, Robert Beatty, whom she married on Oct. 25, 1955, as well as her three children who cared for her in her home during the last year and a half of her life, Bruce Beatty, Mark Beatty and Michele Beatty Bachmann, all of Jerseyville. She is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bob Heitzig of Greenville, Illinois, along with their children, Dillon and Gavin. Her grandchildren looked in on her during the last years and her presence greatly influenced them, Jared and Krista Beatty, Brandon and Shelby Beatty, Krista Beatty, and her companion, Aaron Sandifer. Her great grandchildren are Nila Beatty, Jocelyn Krueger, Kila Sandifer, Kase Sandifer, and Barrett Beatty. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law who cared for her as if she were his own mother, Ronald Bachmann on Aug. 30, 2018. He married the former Thelma Marie Hagen on Jan. 14, 1949, at the United Church of Christ in Fieldon, and they shared 60 years together. He grew up in Otterville with his parents and brother and attended Grafton High School. In his younger years he was a farmer, truck driver, logger and a carpenter, building several homes in Jerseyville and two post offices in Fieldon and Dow. In 1970, he began operating Sauerwein Lumber Company and oversaw its operations as well as growth until his son, Roger, purchased the business in 1990. A resident of Fieldon since 1964, Edwin was very community-minded and served as the mayor for two terms in the 1970s. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are five children and their spouses, Louis and Mary Ellen Sauerwein and Roger Sauerwein, all of Jerseyville, David and Melodie Sauerwein of Charleston, Dennis Sauerwein of Elllisville, Mo., and Linda and Jeff McEvers of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492, where he was a color guard, Jerseyville Rotary, Tri County Antique (Hub and served on the Jersey County Board. (Iverson) Sauerwein's obituary - Vicky L. Sauerwein, 64, died at 8:32 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 at Evelyn's House in Creve Couer, Missouri after a nearly one year battle with metastatic lung cancer. She was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on April 15, 1955, one of five children born to Donald and BernaDene Ione (Montgomery) Iverson. A native of North Dakota, she attended Red River High School in Grand Forks, until moving her senior to Thompson High School in Thompson, North Dakota., where graduated with the Class of 1973. She was immersed in the medical field her entire life, first serving as a Medic with the U.S. Army, and then attended Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas where she earned her nursing qualifications. Throughout her career she had worked at numerous nursing homes and medical facilities, and was employed as a LPN with the Illinois Youth Center at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton until her health began to fail. She met William Sauerwein while they were both stationed with the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri, and the two would eventually marry on Nov. 13, 1982 at her home church, Sharon Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. The early years of their 32 year married life were spent near Fort Hood, Texas where Bill remained with the U.S. Army. After his discharge in 1994, they and their son, moved to Jerseyville, and built their new home in which they still reside. Surviving are her husband, William Sauerwein of Jerseyville; a son, Daniel Sauerwein of Mandan, North Dakota; her father, Donald Iverson of Hatton, North Dakota.; two sisters, Carol Sonneberg of East Grand Forks, Minnesota., and Jeannie Strande of Grand Forks; a brother, Richard Iverson of New Rockford, North Dakota; and her mother in-law, Dorothy Sauerwein of Jerseyville, Illinois. He was born in Otter Creek Township, Jersey County, Illinois on June 3, 1940, one of three children born to Orville Russell "Pete" and Mary (Blackston) Wilson. Russ graduated in 1958 Jersey Community High School, where he participated on the Panther football, basketball and track teams. In his senior year of high school, he began working at Tri-City Grocery in Jerseyville, Illinois and remained there just a few years, before accepting a position with Owens-Illinois Glass Manufacturing in Alton, Illinois. He would continue with the company his entire adult life, dedicating 42 years prior to his retirement in 2002. Russ never went anywhere without a smile or a story to tell. He was a people person, and enjoyed time spent with his friends and family. Russ was always active and contributing, and spent many years as a Khoury League baseball coach and was a familiar face at the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School cafeteria, where he volunteered for many years. He was a talented bowler, and participated on various teams throughout the years. He and his wife Carol, traveled around and spent many a weekend at various bowling tournaments, where they surrounded themselves with good friends and friendships that would last throughout the years. He married the former Carol Egelhoff on October 13, 1962 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and they married life was truly blessed with 56 years, and two wonderful children. Surviving are his wife, Carol Wilson of Jerseyville; a daughter and son in-law, Kelly and Jud Perkins of Kincaid, Illinois; a son and daughter in-law, Kurt and Tammy Wilson of Jerseyville; four grandchildren, Joshua Perkins, and his companion, Jillian Reich of Springfield, Illinois, Samantha Neighbours, and her husband, Craig of Taylorville, Illinois, Dylan Wilson and Autumn Wilson both of Jerseyville; three great grandchildren, Maci, Madison and Morgan Neighbours of Taylorville; and a sister in-law, Roberta Egelhoff of Jerseyville. The reptile is four feet long and was found by young Groppel and his uncle on the John Gerson farm near Fieldon this week. The night before the snake was captured, its mate was killed in the Gerson barn by Mr. Groppel, much to the chagrin of his nephew, who was present and wanted to keep the rattler for a pet. When the dead snake's mate came next day to find its companion, Groppel and his nephew got a long stick and pushed it into a granite bucket. This they put into a keg and screened the top with wire and here the rattler remains contented, feasting on the rabbits and mice supplied by its owner. The two snakes caught by Groppel makes a total of ten rattlers captured recently within a four-mile area. Two were killed about three weeks ago by James Lyles while picking blackberries on the George Medford farm. Harold Medford killed three a short time afterward on his place. Then Wesley Cope killed one on the Robert farm two weeks ago and Lee Devening killed one on his farm last week. Rattle snakes are not common to this territory and their presence in this particular vicinity cannot be accounted for.) He had been residing with a brother, Edward Groppel, at 1221 Garden St., since leaving the "sanatorium last October, and Friday morning when he became ill unexpectedly was moved to the hospital. He had resided in Alton since 1925, moving here with his family from Jersey County. She was a dedicated woman to her family, a devout woman to her Catholic faith, and an integral part of her loving family. She first married Joseph Tonsor on Oct. 25, 1933, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon and together they shared nearly 22 years together before his death on June 24, 1955. She later married Francis "Syke" Groppel on Jan. 31, 1970, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville and they were only blessed with seven years together before his untimely death on Sept. 21, 1977. Surviving are his twin sons, Timothy Edwards and James Edwards both of Carrollton; two grandchildren, Jamie Edwards and Sean Edwards: a sister & brother in law, Judy & John Groppel of Jerseyville; and a brother, Dale Edwards of Carrollton; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Groppel's wife Ernesta (Motsinger) Groppel's obituary - Ernesta Groppel, 42, wife of Morris Groppel of Melbourne Beach, FL, and daughter in law of Mrs Agusta Antroubus of Jerseyville, was fatally injured in an auto accident, June 10, 1959 when her car crashed head on into another car parked on a state road just south of Melbourne Beach. The FL deputy sheriff, who happened to be following 2 cars behind Mrs Groppel when the accident occurred, said she was driving north and apparently did not see the ford which had on its parking lights, but not its headlights. She sustained a broken neck, crushed chest and other injuries, and was pinned under the dashboard of her car, and was dead before an ambulance arrived. Groppel was born Feb. 15, 1902 in Jersey County, IL, and died July 11, 1979. She married Anthony Francis Schmittag April 25, 1923 in Jerseyville, IL, a son of Nicholas and Fanny (Pierre) Schmittag. He was born Feb. 16, 1904 in Jerseyville. He died June 6, 1985. Both are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. (Groppel) Schmittag's obituary - Emma Schmittag of Jerseyville died Wednesday at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home where she had resided. The latter was a former resident of Jersey County and his widow was before her marriage, Miss Adah Groppel. Wick was the son of the late John Wick, Sr., and Mrs. William Wenzel. He was 63 years of age at the time of his death. He had been afflicted with rheumatism for a number of years and complications setting in resulted in his death. He was born near Fieldon, the son of Herman Henry and Johanna Augusta Groppel, both natives of Germany. For 18 years he was associated In the grain business in Jerseyville. In conjunction with their grain business Groppel and his partner operated one of the first automobile agencies in Jersey County. Although Mrs. Bell had been in ill health for sometime, her condition did not become serious until a few days before her death. Williams's obituary - Don E. Williams, 60, died at 10:37 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at his residence after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was born at home in Fieldon on July 22, 1951, and was the son of the late Maurice and Ruby I. (Lyles) Williams. He attended Jersey Community High School and was a truck driver his entire life, owning and operating Don Williams Trucking for many years. He enjoyed his family, spoiling his grandchildren, and spending time and fishing at their cabin at Carlinville Lake. He married the former Donna Jean Isringhausen on Dec. 5, 1970, at the home of her parents in Jerseyville, and they have shared 40 years together. In addition to his wife, Donna, surviving are three children and their spouses, Tammy and Scott Turman of Jerseyville, Crisha and Matt Dunham of Fieldon, and Tim Williams of Jerseyville; five grandchildren, Austin, Jamie and Connor Turman, Brent and Holly Dunham; four brothers and sisters- in-law, Maurice "M.B." Williams, and his wife, Karen Wagner of Carrollton, Merle Williams of Fieldon, Dennis and Vicki Williams, and Gil and Karen Williams, all of Jerseyville; and two sisters-in-law, Linda Probst of Kane and Alice Hemphill and her husband, Darrell of Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Janet I. Williams; and a brother-in-law, John Probst. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Rev. She was born in 1901 in Madison County, Kentucky. She died 6-7-1987 at VIP Manor in Wood River, IL. They had a daughter Betty (Krueger) Wilson (deceased), and a daughter Mary Helen Krueger who died in infancy in 1929.
