-----------------

The above obituary was of Herman F. Groppel. Herman F. Groppel may have been related to Herman H. Groppel in some way. I have been unable to find information to establish how they were related or if they were related. Herman F. Groppel was born March 18, 1846 at Beidefeld, Westfalen, Germany. He died on his farm Jan. 22, 1904 5 miles south of Fieldon, Rosedale Township, Jersey County, IL. His burial was in Fieldon cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He came to the US May 26, 1856 and later married Mrs Louisa (Trauernicht) Burgermeyer Feb. 22, 1871 in Jersey County, IL. She died Jan. 13, 1906 in Jersey County, IL. Her burial was in Fieldon cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. I think Louisa was married before to a man who's last name was Burgermeyer and had 3 children from her first marriage, because in the above obituary for Herman F. Groppel it said he had 3 step children. I'm not sure of the spelling of Louisa's maiden name. I Think it might be spelled Trauernicht or Frauernicht, although I have seen these other spellings for her maiden name in the obituaries and cemetery records also, Traunick and Trauncih. In the above obituary it says that 3 of Herman and Louisa (Trauernicht) Burgermeyer Groppel's children preceded him in death, and that 6 children survived him.

(1aaa) Frederick Gilman's and Mary (Vetter) Gilman's son Anthony William "Tony" Gilman, age 23, was killed in service in the Army in Kosovo on July 4, 1999. -- Here is an article from the L. A. Times Newspaper about his death - GI Struck by Car Is First U.S. Fatality of Peacekeeping Mission, July 06, 1999 - SKOPJE, Macedonia — An Army specialist struck by a car here over the weekend became the first American soldier to die in NATO's Kosovo peacekeeping mission, U.S. military officials said Monday. Spc. Anthony W. Gilman, 23, of Michael, Ill., was hit by the car Sunday afternoon after he stepped into traffic to place a warning triangle on a road to alert approaching motorists to the site of an accident. Two people in the car that struck Gilman, who was assigned to B Company, 94th Engineer Battalion, also died as a result of the crash. Their identities were unavailable Monday. The tragic turn of events began about noon when two vehicles traveling in a military convoy from Salonika, Greece, to Camp Able Sentry in Skopje, the Macedonian capital, got into an accident near a tunnel. No one was injured. But as Gilman set up the warning triangle in the road, a military vehicle got into an accident with a civilian vehicle. The latter struck Gilman, killing him and fatally injuring two people in the car. "The unfortunate thing was that Spc. Gilman was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing," Army Capt. Paul Swiergosz said. "It just tears your heart out." Two U.S. helicopter pilots were killed in May when their Apache AH-64 crashed during a training exercise in Albania, about six weeks into NATO's 11-week air campaign against Yugoslavia.

Here is another article from CNN regarding Spec. Anthony William Gilman's death - U.S. Kosovo peacekeeper killed in Macedonia road accident - July 6, 1999 - Web posted at: 6:33 p.m. EDT (2233 GMT) - WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Army soldier and a Macedonian child died Sunday in a highway accident involving a NATO military convoy that was driving north from Salonika, Greece, to Camp Able Sentry in Macedonia, Army officials said. The death of Spec. Anthony William Gilman, 23, from Missouri, marks the first fatality of a U.S. serviceman among the multinational Kosovo peacekeeping mission. According to an Army news release, the accident occurred around noon southeast of Skopje. Another civilian was injured in the crash. The Macedonia newspaper Vecer carried a detailed description of the accident. The paper, the name of which means "Night," identified the civilian fatality as a 9-year-old boy from the town of Radovis, Macedonia. No names were provided. According to the newspaper, the soldier was struck and killed by a nonmilitary, medium-size truck while trying to direct traffic following a convoy accident that occurred in a highway tunnel. The tunnel, which is named Katlanovo, is situated between the town of Veles and Skopje, the Macedonian capital city. Convoy collision blocks tunnel The first accident apparently occurred when one transport truck in the convoy tried to pass another truck in the procession, the newspaper said. One of the vehicles bumped the other, setting off a series of events that blocked the roadway. A bulldozer being hauled by one of the two trucks apparently slipped onto the road. According to a witness at the scene, the passing truck may have been driving too fast for conditions -- 25 mph to 40 mph -- especially in the narrow tunnel. The soldier was standing near the mouth of the tunnel when a civilian truck that could not stop hit him, according to the paper. The 9-year-old boy was a passenger in the truck and apparently was not wearing a seat belt. The boy flew through the windshield and died immediately, as did the soldier. The driver of the truck was injured. U.S. military officials are investigating.
