Mrs. Elizabeth (Greer) Thompson, 88, a former resident of Jersey County, died Wednesday, August 26, at St. Joseph hospital in Alton where she had been removed for treatment of complications that developed following a hip fracture. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 29, at 2 pm at the Streeper Funeral Home in Wood River. Mrs Thompson, widow of Columbus K. Thompson, was born in Athens, Illinois, March 15, 1865. Her husband and 6 children preceded her in death. Surviving Mrs. Thompson are 3 daughters, Mrs. W. She also leaves 67 grandchildren, 48 g-grandchildren and 3 g-g-grandchildren. 2nd obituary found for Elizabeth (White) Thompson - Mrs. Elizabeth Greer Thompson, 88, mother of 16 children. 10 of whom are living, died Wednesday at 8:55 p.m. in St. Joseph's Hospital. She had been bedfast since July 29, when she suffered a hip fracture in a fall at her home in Godfrey. Following the fall she was a patient in the hospital for 17 days and then was moved to Mather Nursing home where she had been until Tuesday when complications developed and she re-entered the hospital. Mrs. Thompson, the widow of Columbus K. Thompson, was born March 15, 1865, at Athens, ILL. She had resided in Hartford from 1926 until eight years ago when she moved to Edwardsville. She had been in Godfrey for only two weeks prior to suffering the fall in which she incurred the hip injury. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. W. Hendrickson, Eldred; Mrs: Ella Borman, Pasadena, Tex., and Mrs. George Forsting. Hartford: seven sons, Marshall. Versailles, ILL., William, Olive Branch; Logan, Godfrey; Lawrence, Alton; Clarence, Hartford; Roy, Wood River, and Russell, Edwardsville. Six children preceded her in death. Lucille Thompson, a daughter of her son, Shirley, had been reared by Mrs. Thompson and was residing with her at the time she suffered the fatal injury. She also leaves 67 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral rites will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Streeper funeral home, Wood River. A resident of Kane for many years, he was employed at the Kane Croft Farm for 21 years until the farm was sold and then began working as a mechanic and driver for Krause and Son Implement Co. in Jerseyville, retiring in 1982, after dedicating 15 years to the business. He was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695 and enjoyed their many activities and meals that he and his wife were able to take part in and was especially proud of his yard and garden. (Note: Russell Oliver Thompson married first Mildred Westfall (my sister), the daughter of Walter Edward Westfall and Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall, and they had a son Russell Edward Thompson.) Alben, 94, of Bethalto, passed away at 10:21 am on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Eunice Smith Home in Alton. She was born on April 20, 1922, in Alton, the daughter of Edward and Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall. Mildred worked for several different factories in Alton, for 10 years including Glass Works, LaClede Steel, and Olin Corp. She then worked for the next 15 years and the Honkey Variety Store and Bickhouse Sporting Goods. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and a former member of St. Mary’s and St. Kevin’s Catholic Church. She helped for many years at St. Kevin’s in different parts of the church. She was involved with the Wood River Sportsmen Club and Jerseyville Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included crocheting and waxing cars. Mildred married Joseph Alben on November 11, 1944, at Cherry Street Baptist Church and later remarried in the Catholic Church at St. Mary’s in Alton. He preceded her in death in 2000. Survivors include one son and his wife, Russell and Lois Thompson of Rosewood Heights; three grandchildren and their spouses, Terri and Mike Harvey of Alton, Melanie and Dave Moore of Alton, Lesley and Alan Kolesa of Troy; six great grandchildren, Nicholas, Whitney, Alexis, Jenna, Tyler, Lily; four great-great grandchildren, Logan, Kelsie, Corbin, Olivia; and one brother Walter Westfall of Pearl, IL. Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Jersey County, she was one of nine children of Isom and Ada C. (Young) Schaaf. She married Russell Thompson on Nov. 6, 1943, and the two lived in Kane for many years, where he was employed on the Kane Croft Farm. They shared 61 years together before his death on Dec. 15, 2004. Coming from a large, close-knit family, she learned early on what hard work, dedication and loyalty to family meant. She was employed as a cook for many years at Hanks Cafe in Kane and later became a cook at the Kane Grade School for 16 years before retiring. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Jean Johnson of Alton and Verna Kay and Perry Ontis of Fieldon; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Doris Thompson of Fieldon; a stepson, Russell Edward Thompson of Wood River; and numerous grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Norris City, Ill., to Charles and Ethel (Hughy) DeBoard. He married the former Pearl Morris on May 10, 1938, in Kentucky, and they had recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. He was employed with Shell Oil Refinery as an operating engineer for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He served his country in the Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Russ Thompson of Rosewood Heights and Sherrell and Frank Ulett of Godfrey; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sheryl DeBoard of Fairbanks, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was born on March 3, 1919 in Bertrand, MO, the daughter of the late Clifford K. and Lillie E (Davis) Morris. She married Adolph Maxwell DeBoard on May 10, 1938 in KY. He passed away July 25, 2006. Pearl was a homemaker all of her life. She loved doing crafts and sewing but especially being with her family and friends. Both are buried in the Carson Hill Cemetery in Wayne Co., MO. Carson Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest burial grounds in Wayne County. It is located three miles southwest of Mill Spring, MO, and is named for two brothers, Steve and James Carson, landowners who were early settlers. Born September 6, 1961 in Alton, he was the son of Mary L. (Siddens) Doolen of Cottage Hills and the late Elston Eugene Doolen. Dale was a self-employed floor layer. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, flea markets and playing ball and hide-n-seek with his grandchildren. He loved his family dearly. Along with his mother he is survived by a daughter, Jenna Doolen (Luke Pruiett) of Gillespie, IL, two grandchildren, Kelsie and Corbin Pruiett, a brother, Terry Doolen of Cottage Hills a sister, Genia Ruckman of Rosewood Heights as well as nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Doolen, 91, of Alton, died at 9:35 p.m. Friday, September 16, 1994. at Rosewood Care Center after an extended illness. Mr. Doolen was born May 16. 1903, at Vernon, son of Clement and Pearl (Headley) Doolen. He married Cynthia Epps on November 5, 1923, in Decatur, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1994. Mr. Doolen was a Protestant. He was a farmer and lived in the Vernon and Shobonier areas until 1943, then he became a boiler-maker at Shell Oil Company refinery in Wood River and moved to East Alton. He was a member of Boilermakers Local 363 of Belleville. He retired in 1968. Survivors include a son, Eugene Doolen of East Alton; a daughter. Vivian Collier of Shobonier; a sister, Ruth Phinney of Vernon; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Day Funeral Home in Patoka with the Rev. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1994, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. She was a homemaker and lived in Shobiner until moving to East Alton in 1943. Born in Shobiner on Feb. 20, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Florence (McConnell) Epps. She married Elston M. Doolen on Nov. 5, 1923, in Decatur. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Eugene Doolen of East Alton; a daughter, Vivian Collier of Shobiner; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Warren Epps of Lansing, Mich.; and a sister, Maude Wasmeth of Shobiner. Dean, as he was known to most, had a great love of hunting, fishing, woodworking and helping friends at a moment's notice. He built two homes by himself. He retired from Southern Gravure Service in St. Louis, Mo., as a maintenance foreman. He was a United States Army veteran. Dean was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart of 55 years, Dorothy Moore, his parents, Virgil and Flora, nee Cain, Moore; his brother, Robert in infancy; his mother-in-law, Charlene, nee Beck, Peeler; his father-in-law, Alfred Peeler; his brothers-in-law, Bob and Leroy; and his sister-in-law, Helen. He was most content when working on a project. After that, he found solace in spending time with his children and grandchildren and the Senior Center in Millstadt. He helped wherever he could and developed an interest in card playing. Our dad never knew a stranger and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He loved to give advice to whomever would listen and was mentor to many. He was larger than life to his family. He was kind, tender, loving and generous. A man that could do anything he set his mind to. He was an example of strength and courage. He was a hero that taught us how to be strong through it all. But in the end, he was just our dad. After returning to civilian life, she relocated to Jerseyville, and quickly settled into the community. Melody always possessed her trademark style, and had an uncanny way of making others feel comfortable, appreciated and loved. Frances Heitzman, 11, who was on her way to school when the shooting occurred, testified that she had seen Kelley raise his gun, shoot it at Thompson, and saw Thompson fall in the snow in front of Kelley's house. James Vanausdoll, who lives near the Kelley home, testified that he heard the report of a gun and looked up and saw Thompson fall in the snow and saw Kelley walk into his house carrying a gun. Kelley, who turned a gun on himself, inflicting a wound to his head, when police attempted to take him into custody at his home shortly after Thompson was shot, is under police guard at Alton Memorial Hospital. A complaint charging Kelley with murder was signed Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff S. L. Downey of Jersey County. State Police Patrolman Wilson Schullz and Coroner Gubser told the Inquest jury of attempts to reach Thompson's body shortly after the shooting and of attempts to enter Kelley's house, which were met with rifle fire from the house in which Kelly had barricaded himself. Kelley, seventy-eight year old resident of Dow who was sentenced April 18 to imprisonment in the penitentiary for fourteen years for the murder of Shirley K. Thompson of Dow, died on Sunday evening, May 26, at six o’clock at the Menard Penitentiary at Chester where he had been taken by officials of Jersey County on May 1. Following the shooting of Thompson on the morning of December 19, 1945, Kelley barricaded himself in his home in Dow and Jersey County and State Highway officials had to resort to the use of tear gas to effect the arrest of the aged man. Kelley, when apprehended, was found to be suffering from a minor scalp wound and he was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Alton where he remained for treatment for a few days before being transferred to the local jail. Mr. Kelley had been in failing health since his arrest. Surviving the aged man are two sons, James Kelley of California and Walter Kelley of Alton, two daughters, Mrs. Nettie Federle of Dow and Mrs. Rosetta Scanton of East Alton. (3) Jacob and Rachel Emeline (Dunham) Burch's son Harry Lee Burch, 99, died at 2:21 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. Born Sept. 22, 1902, west of Kane, he was a son of the late Jacob and Rachel Emeline (Dunham) Burch. He married the former Elizabeth Turner March 1, 1924, in Carrollton. They shared nearly 74 years of marriage before her death Feb. 8, 2001. An avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, he was a grain and livestock farmer operating a farm in Linder Township of Greene County for many years with his wife. A resident of Greene County for many years, he was the director of the old Douglass and Bryan Country Schools and was a member of the Kane Baptist Church. They remained on their farm until health concerns necessitated their move to Jerseyville in 1989. Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and Jack Whitlock of Kane and Ethel Margeson and Mary Darr, both of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren, Kathryn Franklin, William Smith, Sheila Howard, Cheryl Darr, David Darr and Randy Margeson, all of Jerseyville, Cindy Edwards of Medora and Karen Decker of Brighton; 17 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and his last surviving sibling, May Freand of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by three children, Joyce June Burch, Robert Lee Burch and Gilbert Randall Burch; three sons-in-law, Darrell Smith, Darriel Margeson and Richard Darr; two sisters, Ellen Freand and Fay McAdams; and two brothers, Fred and Ross Burch. Visitation were from 4 to 8 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial was in Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Kane Baptist Church or to the Jerseyville Senior Citizens. -------------------- Harry Lee Burch's wife Elizabeth Bertha (Turner) Burch, 97, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 31, 1904, in Duluth, Ky., a daughter of the late Turp and Margaret (Allen) Turner. She married Harry L. Burch March 1, 1924, in Carrollton, and they have celebrated 76 years together. During their marriage, they lived on several farms in Greene County, mainly on the farm in Linder Township, where they lived for more than 40 years before they decided to move to Jerseyville in 1989. Surviving in addition to her husband, Harry, are three daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and Jack Whitlock of Kane and Ethel Margeson and Mary Darr, both of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren, Kathryn Franklin, William Smith, Sheila Howard, Cheryl Darr, David Darr, Cindy Edwards, Randy Margeson, all of Jerseyville, and Karen Decker of Brighton; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and her last surviving sibling, Christina Carr Umphress of Kane. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Lee and Gilbert Randall Burch; a daughter, Joyce June; three brothers, Everett Turner, Jack Turner and Clarence "Static" Turner; two sisters, Lucy Prough and Ethel Ross; and three sons-in-law, Darrell Smith, Darriell Margeson and Richard Darr. She was laid to rest in Kane Cemetery. Smith Whitlock, 82, died at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at the home of her daughter, Kathryn, after a long battle with cancer. She was born April 9, 1925, in Greene County, a daughter of Harry L. and Elizabeth (Turner) Burch. A 1943 graduate of Jersey Township High School, she worked for Norman and Kathryn Sinclair in their neighborhood grocery store as well as at Heisler's Bakery in Jerseyville. She married Darrell M. Smith on Sept. 26, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo. and they shared 47 years together and raised a family that consisted of three children. He died April 13, 1989. Later, she married Jack Whitlock of Kane on Nov. 11, 1993, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. He survives. She began working at International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville before joining the staff at Jersey Savings and Loan on April 15, 1957. She remained a part of their team for 27 years, retiring June 18, 1984, as a senior vice president and managing officer of what was then called Heritage Savings and Loan. She continued to work there on a part-time basis until 1990 and sold real estate in the Jerseyville area in the early part of the 1990s. In addition to her husband, surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William and Beverly Smith of Jerseyville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Jan Franklin and Sheila and Ron Schroeder, all of Jerseyville; two stepchildren and their spouses, Cindy and Charles McClary of Texas and Craig and Ann Whitlock of East Moline; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Gail and Phil Isringhausen, Diane and Rick Strebel, Doug Franklin, Debbie and Scott Blackorby, Mike Smith, Matt Howard, and Megan and Mike Reynolds, all of Jerseyville; 13 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; Lisa Senko, Brian McClary, Kelly Whitlock and Ryan Whitlock; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Margeson and Mary Darr, both of Jerseyville. Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert and Randall Burch and a sister, Joyce June Burch. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville and a prayer service will begin at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with Father William Hembrow officiating. (4) Jacob and Rachel Emeline (Dunham) Burch's daughter Fay (Burch) McAdams - Homemaker, 4-30-98 - YOSEMITE LAKES PARK – Fay McAdams, a resident here for the past two years, died at home on April 21. She was 91. Services were held Monday at Yosemite Lakes Community Church, where she was a member, followed by burial at Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst. Arrangements were under the direction of Jay Chapel of Madera. Mrs. McAdams was born in Kane, Illinois. She had resided in Illinois all of her life until coming to Yosemite Lakes Park. She was the mother of Audrey Ashlock, YLP; Sharon Garbott, Fresno; Helen Welch, Sebring, Florida; Remthem E. McAdams and E. Leroy McAdams, both of Manito, Illinois. Mrs. McAdams was the sister of Harry Burch and May Freand, both of Jerseyville, Illinois. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Burch, born 03-26-1904, Greene County, Illinois, died 16-12-1979, buried Kane cemetery. Fred L. Burch, 74, of Kane, died Dec. 16, at Jersey Community hospital. Burch was born March 26, 1904 in Greene County. He was the son of Jacob & Rachel Emeline (Dunham) Burch. He married Thelma Greeene Apr. 24, 1944 in Jerseyville. He was a farmer. Survivors are his wife; 2 sons, Norman Burch of Jerseyville and Herschel Burch of Fosterburg; 2 step sons, Norman Abbott of Columbia, SC and Robert Abbott of Grafton; 3 daughters, Rozella Hinson, Otterville, Ruth Crotchett of Shipman and Anna Robuck of Roodhouse; 1 brother, Harry Burch of Rockbridge; 3 sisters, Ella Freand of Jerseyville, Mae Freand of Kane and Fay Mcadams of Peoria; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Visitation and funeral were from Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William Turner officiated and interment was in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society. (6) Jacob and Rachel Emeline (Dunham) Burch's son Ross Henry Burch was born 11-14-1913 in Greene County, IL. He died in 1939. He is buried at Lax Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL.
