He was born 7-20-1873 near Granite City, IL, and died 5-12-1943 in Jersey County, IL. He is buried at Grimes-Neely Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL. His father John Lenon Griffin, was born in 1851 near Wanda, IL, son of Joseph Griffin from Tennessee and Drusilla Rush from IL born in 1824, daughter of John Rush and Mary Skinner. John Griffin's father Joseph Griffin was born in 1821. He married Drusilla Rush 26 Oct 1838 in Clark County, Indiana, and they were the parents of Alexander Griffin, Francis Griffin, Jacob Griffin, Martin T. Griffin, Mary A. Griffin, Nancy J. Griffin and John Lenon Griffin. Joseph Griffin's father was Ezra Griffin (1770 - 1860), born in Albany, Albany County, New York, (wife's name unknown). Ezra Griffin was the son of David Griffin (1765 - 1823) and Rebecca Wilson (1760 - 1850). David Griffin was the son of Thomas B. Griffin (1735 - 1782) and Elizabeth Elkington (1729 - ? ). Thomas B. Griffin was the son of LeRoy Griffin (1711 - 1750) and Marianne Bertrand (1717 - ? ). ------------ When Charles Wesley Griffin was a year old his father John L. Griffin and his Mother separated and the father went to the American bottom in Madison County not far from Alton where he got work from a farmer. After working on the farm a few weeks John Griffin returned to Richwoods Township, where he had left the wife and son; but she had departed, taking the little boy with her. He then drifted West, where he amassed a fortune. He returned in 1912 for a reunion with his son. Charles Wesley Griffin's mother Lucy Alice married Joseph Boruff in 1877. She died of pneumonia a few days after giving birth to a daughter Jennie. Charles Wesley Griffin was 8 and his mother was 30 at the time of her death. His mother Lucy Alice was born Feb. 6, 1851, and died Dec. 15, 1881, daughter of James and Rachel (Daniels) Gibbs. In 1870 Lucy married John Lenon Griffin and they had a son in 1873, Charles Wesley Griffin. They then divorced in 1874. In 1877 Lucy married Joseph Boruff and they had a son born in 1879, George Harry Boruff. Then in 1881, Lucy and Joseph had a daughter, Jennie Boruff. Lucy died of pneumonia Dec. 15, 1881, in Fieldon IL a few days after giving birth to Jennie. Her burial was at Reddish-Cooper Cemetery, Fieldon, Jersey Co., IL. ------------ Charles Wesley Griffin's obituary (partial) - Howard Busnell will officiate, and burial will be in the Grimes Cemetery southwest of Jerseyville. Griffin was the son of John and Alice Brooks Griffin and was born near Granite City on July 20, 1873. His death occurred Wednesday morning. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Westfall Griffin; two sons, Harold and Melvin Griffin of Fieldon; three daughters, Miss Emma Griffin, Miss Geneva Griffin, and Mrs. Alfred Godar of Hardin. He is also survived by a half-brother Charles Rouruff of Alton, and one half sister, Mrs. Thomas Proffer. Two grand children also survive him. ------------- Charles Wesley Griffin's half brother Charles Augustus Rowan was born 31 May 1879 in Alton, Madison Co., IL, and died Dec. 24, 1950 in Silverton, Idaho. His father was Joseph Boruff. Charles was born with the name of George Harry Boruff. His mother Lucy Alice (Gibbs) Griffin Boruff died with pneumonia in 1881, and the children got separated and George went with a family named Rowan and they changed his name to Charles A. Rowan. George (Charles) had one brother; Charles Wesley Griffin and one sister; Jennie Proffer. George (Charles) was raised around Fieldon, IL area. At age 2 he went to live with a family named Rowan. He found out at age 61 his real name was George H. Boruff. In 1880 census he lived in Richwood Township, Jersey Co., IL. In 1910 census he lived in Grayson, Denison Co., Texas. According to the 1920 census and 1930 census he lived in rural Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma near Shawnee, and was listed as married and head of house. In 1940 census he lived near Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma, age 60, widowed. Memorials may be sent to the church where she was a member. ------------------------ Viola Frances (Griffin) Godar's husband Alfred Godar's obituary - Alfred Godar, 84, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis County after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Hardin, son of Paul Frederick and Theresa Agnes (Becker) Godar. He was raised in Hardin and married the former Viola Frances Griffin on April 28, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton. Shortly after their marriage, he entered World War II, serving with an elite bomb squad in Europe with the U.S. Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and began working at the Western in East Alton for a short time before he and his wife purchased a farm near Fieldon. He remained active in farming for many years and retired shortly after the death of his wife on Nov. 11, 1985. During the same time period, he also served as road commissioner for English Township for 20 years. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Roberta Godar of Eldred; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Ted Groppel, Theresa and Richard Killion, and Sylvia "Sug" and David Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Geraldine Krause of Kane, Elaine Turner of Alton, Donna Droege of St. Charles, Mo., and Melba Tepen of Hardin; as well as his former wife, Dorothy, and her daughter, Juanita. He was born in Grafton, Illinois on November 12, 1938, one of four children born to Raymond C. and Jewell (McAdams) Groppel. He was a 1956 graduate of Jersey Community High School, and for many years worked as a mold maker at Owens-Illinois Glass Manufacturing in Alton until the plant closure. He later gained employment with Jersey Community Unit School District #100, serving as a custodian at Illini Junior High School. A devoted family man, he was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and was an avid rabbit hunter. He married the former Wanda Godar on April 8, 1961 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and together they would have soon celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. (2) Charles Wesley Griffin and Anna (Westfall) Griffin's son Melvin Wesley Griffin was born 11-03-1934 in Jersey County, IL, and died 11-16-1978 in Alton, Madison County, IL. He died of a Massive Coronary - caused by a heart defect that was undetected all of his life. He was married to Frances Elizabeth "Betty" (Wilson) Griffin July 6, 1951 in Pocahontas, Arkansas (everyone calls her Betty). They eloped in Arkansas when they were 16 years old. She was from Uptonville, Tennessee - she lived there until she was 12 years old. Her Mom married a man who worked at Owens Illinois and they moved to Alton, IL. Melvin rented an apartment in the house they lived in, and that's how they met. They were still married when Melvin died. She still survives. Melvin worked at Owens Glass Company in Alton, IL for 27 years. He had also been in the National Guard in 1949 and 1950 - before going to work at the glass works. He was born on April 22, 1936, in Carlyle, Ill., son of the late Herman J. and Bertha M. (Lake) Gehrs. On Sept. 30, 1961, he married the former Judy Etter at St. Mary's Church in Carlyle, Ill. She survives. Paul was a graduate of Mater Dei High School in Breese, Ill. He served four years in the U.S. Navy as a radar man aboard the destroyers U.S.S. Chambers and the U.S.S. McGowan. He was a life member of the VFW Post 3523 in Carlyle. He worked at Granite City Steel as a pipefitter for 32 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto. She was an active member of the Clinton County Historical Society and enjoyed bowling, crocheting, and playing cards. Edith loved spending time with her family and friends. She was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Jerseyville, and was the daughter of the late George E. and Irene (Chism) Brown. She married Norman L. Breden on January 4, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army. He preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1985. She was a 1940 graduate of Jersey Township High School. She was employed in the office of the Jersey County Circuit Clerk for several years, working with her father, George Brown, who was serving one of his terms as circuit clerk. She retired in July 1985 from the former Democrat-News in Jerseyville, after 20 years of service, and continued to write a column for the former News Journal. She was a member of Holy Ghost Church in Jerseyville, where she sang in the choir for many years. She was also a longtime member of the Carrollton Community Chorus. She was born on June 14, 1928, in Whitton, Arkansas, one of fourteen children born of the late Thomas M. and Fannie Mae (Easley) Smithey, and grew up, along with her siblings, in Dyess, Arkansas. At the young age of 19, Helen married the love of her life, Seywood Jones, on July 18, 1947, in Lepanto, Arkansas, and the two moved to Illinois, eventually settling in Delhi in 1967. Helen and Seywood were blessed by God with eight wonderful children and numerous grandchildren throughout their 64 years of marriage before his death on Septand 8, 2011. She enjoyed spending time in her garden tending to her flowers, and in the kitchen, where she was known for her delicious apple pie. She was a woman of faith, and enjoyed reading her Bible and was an active member of the Eastland Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Helen truly embodied a life of Faith, Love and Family and gave all she had to living out those principles. She never met a stranger, and you could always count on a conversation with her to leave you with a smile and a renewed faith in the Lord. She possessed this same love and devotion for her family and treasured the countless memories and time spent with each and every one of them. He was born on August 16, 1955 in Bono, AR, one of eight children born to Seywood & Helen (Smithey) Jones and spent much of his live residing in the Jerseyville area. He moved to Joliet at age 19, it was during his time there that he met and soon married the former Karen Haas on March 20, 1976 at the St Paul’s Catholic Church in Joliet and together they had four children and shared in 40 years of marriage. Woody and Karen made their home in Joliet for nearly 20 years before returning to Jerseyville in 1994 when Woody accepted a position as a Maintenance Mechanic at American Steel in Granite City, where he worked for 5 years before his health began to decline. He enjoyed eagle watching and sports, with the Chicago Bears, Bulls and the St. Louis Cardinals being among his favorites. Woody also enjoyed working with his hands and had many talents that seemed to come natural to him. He developed of a love of carpentry while working at a cabinet shop in Joliet and continued to build many items around the house in the years to come. He also enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles, especially his Harley Davidson. The two things that Woody held most valuable to him, however, where his faith and his family. He was a member of the Eastland Baptist Church in Jerseyville, where he regularly attended services with his mother, and enjoyed each and every moment spent with his children. Growing up, the memories they made sitting around the living room watching wrestling on pay per view and eating pizza are ones they will never forget. She then married John Schmieder on Aug. 24, 1991 in Jerseyville, and they shared 24 years before his death on Dec. 3, 2015. In her early years, Anna worked at the International Shoe Factory, but soon married Edward J. Becker. The two married on Sept. 11, 1943, in Fieldon, and for many years she cared for her family, home and farm, which was located north of Fieldon. It was on the farm that many memories were made of hard work, steadfast faith, and the joys of raising their two daughters, until failing health necessitated their move to Jerseyville in 1987, with Edward passing away on June 12, 1989. Anna was devoted to her family and her Catholic faith. Always on the go, she never passed on an opportunity or an invitation, and was a daily afternoon fixture at the Jerseyville Knights of Columbus, where she enjoyed the company of others and her Diet Pepsi. She was a gifted and generous quilter, creating countless different quilts throughout the years, and could always be counted on to donate one of her highly sought after creations at the yearly St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School Auction. He was born on the family farm in Nutwood on October 30, 1943, one of seven children born to Fred and Stella (Isringhausen) Kanallakan. Tony Joe was raised on the family farm and graduated in 1961 from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville. Aside from an honorable two year term with the United States Army, he has lived, worked, raised his own family, and entered Heaven from the same farm that he began life's journey.Tony Joe centered his entire life around family and farm. However, it was his deep faith in God that was the foundation of his life. Tony Joe was strongly devoted to his family, and instilled into each of them the important characteristics of love, honesty, hard work, dependability, humility and tolerance. He was a humble man who led by example, and never thought twice about lending a helping hand to whomever in need. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting, especially deer, duck, squirrel, and turkey. It wasn’t surprising seeing Tony Joe checking his crops and livestock on his gator. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. With all his admirable attributes, Tony Joe was most proud to be that of a loving, caring, supportive and dependable Husband, Dad and Grandpa to his appreciative family. He married the love of his life Sandra Lazar on February 4, 1967 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon. They have shared 51 years together and raised their family of four children, who in turn blessed them with 13 grandchildren. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Nov. 26, 1987, the daughter of Jeffrey Glen and Debra Lynn (Kanallakan) Stagner. Kayla had a wide variety of interest and was a true free spirit who enjoyed living life on her terms. She graduated with the Class of 2006 from Jersey Community High School, and earned her associate's degree from Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey.Her younger years were spent working at Dairy Queen, and later at Beasley's Fish Market in Grafton. She was currently employed as a pre-school instructor at Step by Step Child Care Center in Bethalto. She enjoyed the sounds of Bob Marley, Tom Petty and Pink Floyd among others, and enjoyed her intense binge watching sessions with her daughter, Marleigh, with one of her favorite series being "Criminal Minds," of which she virtually has seen every episode. Being a country girl, she truly enjoyed being outdoors and appreciating nature. She was a true animal lover, and considered her pets family. She was so passionate about animals, that you if were with her in a car, you should be prepared to stop at a moments notice to allow a turtle to cross the road, and if need be, get out of the car and speed up the situation, guaranteeing its safety. Surviving are her mother, Debra Stagner of Rosedale; her father, Jeffrey Stagner of St. Charles, Mo.; her beloved daughter, Marleigh Imogene Stagner of Rosedale; a brother and sister in-law, Kyle and Kayla Stagner, and their daughter, Kayla's only niece, Ella Kay, of Fieldon; grandparents, Darrell and Esther Kanallakan of Rosedale, and Judith Stagner of Granite City; aunts and uncles and their families, Mark and Shelly Kanallakan of Rosedale, Jodi and Scott Ennis of Atlanta, Ga. and Jerry Stagner of Rock Island. She was born on August 4, 1949, one of six children born to the late Jimmie Antone and Mary Lou (Healey) Kanallakan and grew up in Delhi, graduating with the class of 1968 from Jersey Community High School. She married Ronald Eugene King on November 2, 1968 in Delhi and together they shared in the joys of raising their five children and 35 years of marriage prior to his death on July 11, 2004. LaVonne worked as a Beautician in her younger years, prior to starting her family when she became a loving devoted stay-at-home mom. As her children grew up, she began working as a Groomer at Jersey Calhoun Veterinary Hospital, where she retired in 2016, after 17 years of service, creating many lasting friendships throughout her career. She had a deep commitment and love for her family, with her love for animals running a close second. Her children and grandchildren were her true pride and joy and she relished in each and every moment she was able to spend with them all. Whether it was family get-togethers at her home, with her nearly famous fried chicken, or traveling with one another. The Holiday’s in particular brought about some of the happiest memories for LaVonne and her family, and she would have her home decorated to the fullest extent from Fall through Christmastime. Lauretta attended Jersey Township High School, and spent her professional career serving the students of Jersey County as a cook at both Fieldon Elementary and Illini Junior High School, however, her most treasured position in life was that of a servant of the Lord, and the most loving wife, mother and grandmother a family could possibly wish for. She dedicated herself to those she loved the most, and she will be missed dearly. She married Truman Devening on Sept. 18, 1940 in Elsberry, Mo., and they resided and raised their family of eight children on their farm near Fieldon. They enjoyed 58 years together before his death on Jan. 1, 1999. Surviving are her eight children & their spouses, Sherman & Betty Devening of Jerseyville, Dayle & Mary Lou Devening of Fieldon, Sharon & Clayton Wadlow of Jerseyville, Marilyn & Paul Rogers of Jerseyville, Brenda & Jeff Waters of Jerseyville, Linda & Les Eads of Jerseyville, Janice Devening, and her partner, Linda Powers of Godfrey, and Gayle & Mark McGill of Chesterfield; 16 Grandchildren; 30 Great Grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Kilcrane and Irene Krueger; and a brother, Francis J. Price, who swore that Francis Hall was in Jerseyville from 11 o'clock on Sunday morning until 8 o'clock Monday morning on the night of the 20th. The jury adjourned immediately after hearing this testimony, and on Thursday morning a thorough search of the ruins will be made by Jurors for the missing parts of Mrs. Ahrling's body, as the coroner Is working on the theory that the woman was murdered before Ahrling left his home on Sunday morning for Jacob Haag's home. Steve Ahrling and Father Eckhard had a long talk with the prisoner and pleaded with him to tell the truth and thus help to clear the matter up. To which he replied: "As sure as I am standing here, Minnie was alive when I left, home Sunday morning to go to Jacob Haag's. I did not lay my hand upon the woman." He stated that he left on Sunday morning for Haag's to see the children, as he and his wife were worried about them; she felt that she was not strong enough to walk to Haag's and stated that. she would not be afraid to be alone. He asserted this was the last he had seen his wife alive and he did not know anything at all about the fire. He also stated that the 7500 which is missing (and is used as the motive for the crime, if there was a crime), was in the house In a glass jar in the cellar and that it was covered with a boiler. Then Ahrling commenced to cry and wring hip hands, declaring that he was going to be hung that afternoon and pointing to (Decker and Hammes) in a nearby cell, said those detectives are watching me all the time. Feb. 25, 1916 - MAN ALLEGES HE AND WIFE MADE DIVISION OF POISON - Coroner's Jury Out 4 Hours Apparently Hopelessly Tangled Over Farm Fire Death. The Coroner's jury which for three days has been hearing testimony at Jerseyville at an inquest into the death of Mrs. Minnie Ahrling, parts of whose body were found in the ruins of her burned home, Monday, was reported hopelessly hung after four hours deliberation at 9 o'clock last night. Coroner Bray, who believes Mrs. Ahrling was murdered, her body dismembered and the house fired to conceal the crime escorted the jurors to his office in Jerseyville and said he expected to keep them all night. Antone Ahrling, husband of the dead woman, was on the witness stand more than an hour and sub jected to a grilling by Coroner Bray and State's Attorney Chapman. The Inquest was conducted In the Jerseyvllle Courthouse and more than 40 persons; about half of them women packed the room. Corridors and adjoining chambers were also crowded wilh men and women. Although Ahrling who has not been in jail since shortly after the findtn of his wife's body, would not admit that a suicide pact had been entered into between himself and his wife. He testified that he poured out half of a bottle of carbolic acid into a smaller vial and placed in in his pocket while his wife kept the rest of the poison Saturday night. She was despondent and felt blue Ahrling said in response to questions, "and we had talked it (suicide) over. She told me she felt like taking poison and maybe burning the house." Additional evidence to support coroner Bray's theory that the body was dismembered before being burned was discovered in the ruins yesterday morning by three jurors who visited the scene. They reported that they had found pieces' of skull bones near the heating stove below what had been the living room in the center of the house, while most of the parts of Mrs. Ahrling were found below, where her bedroom had been, at the northwest corner of the structure. JERSEYVILLE. Oct. 12, 1916 - After interviewlng over one hundred and thlrty Jurymen during a period covering two days, twelve men were found about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, and the trial started in the Anton Arhlihg case. Mrs. Wilhelmina Ahrllng was found dead in the ruins of their home which was destroyed by fire on tha morning of February 20th, 1916; the coroner's inquest delved deeply into the matter, and detectives from different parts of the country have worked on the case, as well as men from the office of the State Fire Marshal Bennett, but none of these men havo been able to find as to who started the flre that destroyed the Ahrllng homo. No new testimony has been in! troduced so far in the trial, and all the testimony given so far Is by tho witnesses summoned by the prosecution. These witnesses so far have established a fairly good alibi for Ahrling, each witness declaring that he spent all tho time from Sunday morning, February 19th, at 8 o'clock until 8 Monday morning, February 21st, at tho Jacob Haag home. Hunt, Oct. 18, 1916 - Jerseyvllle Man Whose Wife Burned to Death Given Fourteen Years - Anton Arhling, whose wife's charred body was found in the ruins of the home on thelr farm near Jerseyville last February 21th was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to fourteen years in the Penitentuary. The verdlct was opened Sunday by Judge Norman L. Jones, sitting in the Jersey County Circuit Court. It bad been returned sealed Saturday night at 10 o'clock by the jury which had deliberated thirty hours. Ahrllng was indicted by a Jersey County Grand Jury last March after it had been shown at tho inquest that he had sent his children to the home of a neighbor before his own home was destroyed by fire. He was not arrested until a week affer his wife's body had been discovered. Th« lengthy deliberation, over Ahrling's fate was caused by a division in the Jury, which at first stood 7 to 5 for conviction. The division was caused, it was said, by the question of Ahrling's sanity. Ahrling's wife has several relatives living In Alton and they are and have always been divided In opinion as to his guilt. Some do not believe he is guilty, and an appeal will be taken according to Attorney D. J. Sullivan who defended Ahrllng. THIRD TRIAL ACQUITS, Carrollton, ILL., April 9, 1918 - After being a prisoner for two and a half years on a charge of wife murder, Antone Ahrling has been released and acquitted. He had three trials, the first two finding him guilty. The evidence was entirely circumstantial. (Note: Death certificate for Antone Ahrling said he died in Bunker HIll, Macoupin County, Illinois on September 1, 1925 from a self-inflicted gunshsot wound. Says he was born on August 24, 1874 in Illinois. His wife was Minnie Ahrling. His father was Henry Ahrling, born in Germany. Mother was Theresa Varmon born in Germany. Charlotte was the daughter of the late Jesse Benjamin Kirchner and Marie Josephine Egelhoff Kirchner. She was born on March 16, 1923, in Jersey County, six miles east of Jerseyville on the same farm where she died. She was the oldest child of three with one sister, the late Doris Kirchner Cairns; and one brother, the late John O. Kirchner. In her youth, she attended Paradise School through eighth grade, worked on the family farm, and was employed at the shoe factory in Jerseyville. On June 14, 1941, Charlotte married John H. Rothe, who preceded her in death. They lived one mile east of Brighton for over 20 years, and they raised their daughters, Carol, Sharon and Linda. Charlotte was a full-time homemaker and John worked at Standard (later Amoco) Oil Co. In 1969, they moved back to the farm where Charlotte had grown up. As a devoted and active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton for over 60 years, Charlotte taught Sunday school, helped sponsor youth groups, and served in the women's groups. She was a loving, caring wife and mother whose many interests included sewing, quilting, embroidery, cooking, canning, gardening, caring for the farm animals, caring for her flowers, keeping a daily log of life, and participating in the garden club and home extension activities. St. Louis police told the Alton chief that a man was being held at Central Station. Chief Smith left at once for St. Louis. Jersey County authorities conferred with Chief Smith this morning, after which Smith had sent a request to Chief of Detectives Carroll in St. Louis that the man be picked up. Fred Kirchner, 54, storekeeper and trucker of Otterville, Jersey county, died at, 7:45 a. m., today at Alton Memorial Hospital of bullet pounds inflicted Friday at about 8:30 P. m., when he drove his truck into the garage at his home. With bullet wounds in the right side of his neck, the right shoulder and the left spleen, Kirchner drove the truck a quarter of a mile from his residence to his store where his wife was. At Alton Memorial Hospital this morning Mrs, Kirchner said that after reaching the porch of the store and calling, "Help, I'm shot," her husband collapsed and had been unable to tell them much about the shooting with exception that the man who shot him was "tall and had a thin face". Jaw Fractured -One bullet entered his mouth, fractured his jaw, and passed through the right-side of his neck. Another that entered the left forearm passed down into the abdomen and lodged near the spleen. A third wound was in the right shoulder. Because of shock from which Kirchner was suffering after reaching the hospital the attending surgeon was unable to operate. Several customers were in the store with Mrs. Kirchner when her husband arrived there and they aided in getting a doctor and later in moving Kirchner to the hospital. Chief Ray Shortal of the Jerseyville police was called to Otterville, with Night Patrolman Ritter. The chief told a reporter that Kirchner had eaten his dinner, and had come from his house and was getting Into the truck when he was shot. Drives to Store - He drove to the store, stopped the truck, and fell out. As a group gathered about him he was heard to say, "I've been shot", Jerseyville police were called. Chief Shortal and Ritter came to Memorial Hospital, but Kirchner could not be questioned. Later Sheriff Long and a deputy came to the hospital. An autopsy was held this morning at the funeral home of Coroner Klunk and two bullets were removed from Kirchner's hody—one from the abdomen, one from the neck. Kirchner was born and reared In the Otterville vicinity where for the past 19 years he had operated a general merchandise store. He did trucking as a sideline, it was said, and yesterday had worked with a combine, his wife added. Besides his widow, Mrs. Ida M. Kirchner, he is survived by four Brothers and one sister.) Two Witnesses Quote Victim as Saying Man Had Face Covered - Whether the assailant who shot Fred Kirchner was masked or whether he wore no covering over his face was undetermined in testimony at an inquest Saturday evening at which an open verdict of homicide was concluded in an inquest which was conducted here Saturday by Deputy Coroner Klunk in the presence of Jersey County State's Attorney DuHadway and his asssitant, John Suddes, and Sheriff Long. Two witnesses quoted the wounded storekeeper as relating he had been shot by a "tall man with a thin face, with a covering over his face". Four witnesses, including Kirchner's widow, testified they did not recall Kirchner saying anything about a "covering' over the face of his assailant. No New Angle - No new angles of the mystery slaying were developed at the inquest, held in the Klunk funeral home, and on all other points mentioned, other than that of whether Kirchner's assailant had been masked, those testifying were in general agreement. Finding of the jury was that Kirchner, 55, had died at 7:55 a. m., Aug. 24 in an Alton hospital "from gunshot wounds in the chin and left chest, the shooting occurring in Jersey county on Aug. 23 between 8 and 9 p. m. by a party or parties unknown; we, the jury, recommend that when and if the parties be apprehended, they be held awaiting the action of the Jersey County grand jury without bond—Homicide - Mrs. Ida M. Kirchner, widow of the Otterville merchant, was first to relate the known details of the mystery shooting. Widow' Testimony - "Between 8 and 8:30 on the evening of Aug. 23." she said, "my husband left the store for supper. I was at the store. A little later I heard a car coming. I did not recognize the voice, but it was a man's voice, and he hollered. 'Help, I'm shot'. He stopped in front of the store and turned off the switch nnd starled lo get out. He fell on the porch. I recognized then it was my husband, Fred Kirchner. 1 went out and asked him what had happened. He replied, he'd been shot. I asked him where, and he said in the face and stomach. In the slore at the time were Lloyd Vinson and his wife, Edith, Cory Calhoun, Louis Hinson, and Catherine Wock. I asked my husband who did it. And he said a tall man with Ihin face. I Ihen called Dr. Brewster and Gubser's ambulance and they moved him to Alton Memorial Hospital where he died at 7:55 a. m., Aug. 24. M. Lloyd Vinson of Jerseyville Route 3 testified lo the same facts as had Mrs. Kirchner but added that when Kirchner was asked if he knew who had shot him he replied "No" before describing the "tall fellow with thin face". Informally during an intermission in Vinson's statement. Mrs. Kirchner told the jury lhat her husband at no time after the shooting had mentioned just where he was when he was shot. Witnesses Disagree - A juror asked Vinson whether he thought Kirchner was intending to designate any certain person when he described his assailant, and Vinson answered "No". Several witnesses expressed readiness to sign the statement of facts as related by Vinson. One, however, declared she had heard Kirchner add to the description of the tail assailant that his face was covered ; Louis Hinson and Mrs. Edith Vinson signed as corroborating witnesses the statement of Lloyd Vinson, none recalling having heard anything said about the man being masked. Cory Calhoun, quoted Kirchner as saying his assailant had been a "lall man with thin face, with a covering over his face". He added lhat Kirchner nad not been able to talk plainly, due to the wound near his lips, and "said some things I couldn't understand". His recital was corroborated by Catherine Wock who affirmed having heard Kirchner remark about his assailant being masked. Submitted to the jury was nn autopsy report showing the bullet that entered Kirchner's left chest punctured the stomach, liver, and lung, and finding the gunshot wound through the chest and abdomen likely was fatal. The report also traced course of a bullet lhat entered a half inch under the lower lip and lodged in the neck; also mentioned a bullet wound in the left forearm. In Informal discussion while the Jury was deliberating, mention was made that Kirchner had carried about $175 which was still In his wallet in his trouser pocket after he was wounded, It was remarked he had been in the habit of driving home alone, and also that his store was held up nine years ago and a large sum secured by a bandit. From this conversation, several present expressed an opinion that robbery had been a motive in the slaying. One of those present affirmed that Kirchner after the first robbery had declared that if ever held up again he would make an effort to get his billfold out and tuck it away where it might not be found. Graveside funeral services and military honors will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. The procession will depart for the cemetery at 9:00 AM Wednesday from Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project. (8) Charles and Alvena (Hooper) Kirchner had another son who I have not been able to identify.
